Returning MUGEN member; Need thoughts

Hey, I've decided to return to MUGEN again, but I'm having trouble building up my roster and setting up my stages. Since a lot of websites and download links have become completely broken over the past few years or so, I'm not so sure where to look anymore. Basically, what happened is that I discovered that the web host that keeps Ahuron's MUGEN site up got shut down this year, along with many other websites it also once hosted. I'm also concerned about getting the latest version of certain characters and stages. I'm completely set with my screenpack (I'm using brokenMUGEN), although it would be nice if any of you can help me out on looking for screenpacks as well.

So are there any big names in the MUGEN community right now that are making some good content for MUGEN? And are there any characters, stages, or screenpacks that I should check out? And are there any good Fighter Factory tutorials out there that I should consider reading? I'll continue to look further into these things but in the mean time, please share me your thoughts or comments on this. Thanks.

EDIT: Almost forgot. To those of you that make content for MUGEN or are pixel artists, can you guys tell me what programs you guys use to work on your sprites?

This is a good start, thank you. I have a question I want to ask: is there anyone in the forum or other parts of the MUGEN community that are still playing WinM.U.G.E.N? How much content made for MUGEN is dedicated to MUGEN 1.0 or 1.1b? Should I primarily focus on playing MUGEN 1.0 or 1.1b?

Most people have switched to 1.0 or 1.1b, though I believe there are still a select few that are using WinMUGEN. The consensus is that 1.0 is the version mostly used, though there are others that use the most recent edition for its zooming capabilities and non-indexed .png use.

I personally would have loved to use 1.1b more often because of its zoom in capabilities for stages. The thing about it though is that I installed the brokenMUGEN screenpack with it and I noticed it had color problems. With Elecbyte's website down though, I'm not sure if we'll ever get anoter stable release.

I personally stick with 1.0, there's been a lot of great content available for it. There's amazing content being dropped/worked on every single day.

http://mugenguild.com/forum/your-releases-1-0.359

http://mugenguild.com/forum/projects.310

check out the releases section and the projects for some of the newer stuff. There's also a sprite projects section you can check out to see some of the spriters works in progress.

http://mugenguild.com/forum/sprite-projects.396

WinMugen is pretty much dead. WinMugen+ is still used by some I imagine, though it is quite outdated and not many NEW creations are compatible for it. Here's the older releases section. The plus side of this is that a lot of the older mugen creations are compatible for 1.0.

http://mugenguild.com/forum/your-releases-older-mugen.309

There's also links to creators websites on the front page (all of whom are very good.) Not only is there creator websites, but the MFG database is up as well so you can find some older characters that're listed that you may remember.

Trinity Mugen, Mugen Coder, Random Select, MugenFreeForAll, Just No Point & BrazilMugenTeam also have some websites hosted with some great creators.

http://www.randomselect.piiym.net/
http://mugenfreeforall.com/index.php?/forum/112-creators/

http://brazilmugenteam.com/bsc/

Here's a random assortment of user websites as well:
http://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/creator-website-database-153191.0.html

There's also the Mugen Guild starter pack, which features some commonly downloaded and well made stuff, all pre-packed and ready to go.

As far as newer released content that's good to follow, you can check out the contributions of the month to see what characters users of this forum voted for. That'll give you a good idea on some newer characters to pick up as well.

And just for fun here's some of my personal favorite creators websites:

http://www.sites.google.com/site/dissidiamugen/ (Stages, Characters, Screenpacks.)
http://buckus.mugen-infantry.net/ (Characters.)
http://infiniteff.forumotion.com/f21-iff-releases  (Character releases by R@ce and Infinite)
http://tamez.smeenet.org/ (Stages, Lifebars, Misc.)

http://www.freewebs.com/sonichedgehog_v1 (Stages by Teros.)
http://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=FE71D6C299938D39!140&authkey=!ACGZG1TNy6rZk-s&ithint=folder%2c (Characters by Sennou-Room)
http://excahmmugen.blogspot.com/ (Stages)
http://sites.google.com/site/roysquadrocks (Characters)
http://www.mediafire.com/?3h5s2u9s93rkk (Characters by Warusaki 3)
http://www.thephotonfalls.com/ (Characters by Aiduzzi)
http://web.archive.org/web/20081114214306/http://borghi1.free.fr/ (Characters by Borghi)
http://cenobite53.mugengermany.com/ (Stages, Characters.)

Some offline (but request-able in the appropriate section) creators that're also very good and i highly recommend:
Immortal SyN (Strider Hiryu, Several Stages)
KojiroBadness (Groove removal patch for Warusakis CVS chars, plus a few great characters.)
MOTVN (Stages)
HankVenture (Stages)

To answer your sprite question, the most commonly used program for Mugen editing is Adobe Photoshop. There's Gimp as well (the free alternative) as well as paint, paint shop pro, etc. You can always ask for help too, there's people here willing to help with that sort of thing all the time in the help section.

As far as tutorials go, they're everywhere there's a section here, and just about every other Mugen forum as well. But the best thing to read when getting started for any sort of Mugen creation is the docs.

Welcome back to the forums, and have fun.

I'd suggest using 1.0. There are some 1.1 exclusive stages, but many character's effects won't work properly with the zoom.

I notice one of the links has MUGEN Infantry in the address. I remember back in the day, that's where I first discovered the EVE screen pack.

What happened to MUGEN Infantry and the people a part of it? And is there a way to download characters from MUGEN China's KOF Zillion?

For the KOFZ Characters, I'm not sure what you'd have to do. As for MUGEN Infantry, it pretty much died a while ago.

The old Mugen Infantry died some time ago along with the database, so you would need to use the Wayback Machine for that.
However Aztec remade it so that only registered members can get access to it.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I used Infantry waaaay back and came here after getting tired of it going down all the time. Eventually it died completely without me even noticing.
