The VG plugin collection! (first wave)
"Highly Experimental emulates the CPU and sound hardware in order to play the music from these games.  The same concept has been used with similar formats for other game systems:  NSF, SPC, SID, and GBS." - taken from the Higly Experimental readme
What you've just heard is that one can have the ability to listen to video game music that has been ripped from a game (or rom) itself. In this "collection", I've included the necessary instructions and files in order to run the following formats--
SPC - this would be music ripped from Super Nintendo/Super Famicom games
PSF/MINIPSF - Playstation 1 music/sounds
PSF2/MINIPSF2 - same as above, but from the PS2

I'm planning to add support for the following formats
vgm & cym - MAME/Sega Genesis(Mega Drive)
gsf/minigsf - Game Boy Advance (based off of the Highly Experimental plugin)
(nsf and gbs are probably never going to be implemented, as they're set up completely different)

First off, you have to download the main zip (which is at the bottom of this posting), and unzip the files to the plugin directory; and move the spcs/psfs to your music directory.
Then, in order to enable spc, psf/minipsf, and psf2 files; unzip everything to the plugin directory, then add the following lines to the mugen.cfg file, where you'd list the "Winamp-compatible plugins"

plugin = plugins/in_snes.dll, spc
plugin = plugins/in_psf.dll, psf, minipsf, psf2, minipsf2

(a looptype isn't necessary, as the plugin.ini file is set up for endless play)
Finally, open up a stage and change the music to a vg music file, and you're set to go!
(I've included a few files to play around with)

NOTE - if you are using minipsf files, you *need* a psflib file for the track
For example, you have a few Final Fantasy 7 minipsfs that you want to use, so you need the Final Fantasy 7 psflib in order to play them. If you are going to use a number of minipsfs from different games, it would help to have separate directories for the different games. ;)

Now you have these plugins, but you have no files to play?
Here's your choices - either rip the music files from a few roms, or go to Zophar's Domain to get complete game music archives; your choice.
(also)
If you have Winamp, you can also copy the files to the plugins directory, and edit the plugin.ini to add the plugin info contained in the zip. ^-^

I hope you enjoy this "collection".

Add support for VGM/CYM?  There are already plugins that will work with WinMUGEN to play those formats.  I've used them quite a bit myself.  Also, it's better to use the newest in_vgm.dll plugin to play GYM/VGM/CYM music as it's got more features.

As for NSF/GBS.  Easy solution.  For NSF, use the NSF Track Ripper.  For GBS, use the GBS2GSF converter.  This way, you have one less plugin installed.  Both programs can be found here.

I've been part of the emulation scene for a good long time.  All of the formats and more are available tom MUGEN through Winamp plugins.  Now, if they can create a plungin for Winamp that allows you to play the music from NeoGeo/CPS1/CPS2 ROMs directly (ie. Nebula Jukebox), then I'd be really happy.

I think to recall a plugin for Qsound roms... but my memory isn't what used to be... I may be wrong though

Highly Quixotic, by the same guy who made Highly Experimental, Neil Corlett. Find it here: http://www.neillcorlett.com/hq/.

Yes, this is for QSound music, but not for roms I'm afraid.  This plays back music that has been ripped from PSX games that use the QSound Music Engine.  Also, it's development has stopped.  It's sad to see these types of projects, with such great potential, die out.  Laterz~

The file id is invalid it says..  Ack..  (does this work in DOS MUGEN?  To all the "GET WIN MUGEN NOW ASAP" whenever I try that, like all of my characters and stages don't work at all in it and I love the chars and stages I have)

Sound plugins are only compatible with newer versions than Dos Mugen

  • Shout out to all my fans.
Would this work with a USF plugin?
