You get the game for 6 months, then it is no longer yours more or less.

I wonder if you're even allowed to have backups...

You do get to play forever, but you just lose capability for a digital backup, that you don't have to maintain, after six months.

Valve's system rocks. After you buy the game, you can play it on any computer given that your account isn't already logged in.
