When the guy is good... :cool2:
Man!! These looks amazing!! Wondering how does it looks with other colors...

I performed an ancient ritual to summon the mighty spirit known as "F-r'oz", and traded my first born for a boon:

I don't know if should have laughed at this but it was pretty funny, it should be in the QOTD thread.

The hurricanes don't change color, though! There's not enough space on the color table.

I mean, I guess I could do it like CvS2, and combine the Tiger Kick, Golden Heel, and Screw Upper effects into a single block of colors, and then have the other big block of effect colors be the Hurricane Upper effects, but I'm not really enthused of cramming most of the effects to a single block of color. I also like having separate Tiger Kick and Golden Heel effects, that way the fire in the Tiger Kick is more red and less orange/gold!

Joe is still just a beta, official release, with the new FX and more, will be very very soon.

In the meantime:

VS palette -> default palette test
->
had to start over on the separation cuz I fucked up a fair amount of things (I had only finished around 10 sprites so far, so it's not like I'm losing much!), and was thinking of maybe not separating the outline color to make things much easier. But I dunno. I'm gonna try tinkering with Froz's CFJ spearation again to see if there is some way to use that as an overlay of sorts, which will make separating the Vampire Savior sprites muuuuuch easier.

I haven't even started to put the sprites together; that's someone else's Demitri!

The sprites will either be from Darkstalkers itself or the slightly modified Capcom Fighting Jam set. I don't care for his SvC sprites (or any sets derived from it).

But I'm not sure exactly what sprite set I'll end up using right now. CFJ has several advantages: Froz has already color separated it, and it looks nicer that the DS sprites in some respects. But there's just something about the CFJ sprites (which are just the DS sprites stretched vertically by a small amount, and given slightly redrawn hair) that ever so slightly bugs me; a nagging displeasure based entirely on aesthetics, that troubles my mind.

And I'll also note that while the sprite rips from CFJ (probably, I'm pretty sure) contain every Capcom-drawn sprite Demitri's ever had, not all of them were "converted" to the new standard. Only the ones used in CFJ itself were stretched and fiddled with, so stuff like his Vampire Savior style Chaos Flare or his seppuku animation are all identical to the Darkstalkers sprite set. Obviously, converting them to match the rest of the sprites won't be some impossibly hard task, but it is still something that's worth taking into account when deciding on what set to use.

The gameplay system is also something that needs to be discussed: I'm planning on approaching the character in the same manner as PotS's Lei-Lei, meaning heavier emphasis on gameplay elements from Darkstalkers. Or I guess, to be more accurate, gameplay elements from CFJ's interpretation of Darkstalkers's system. So quite a lot of the usual system features will be missing (power charge, parries, rolls, etc.), but chain combos and pursuit attacks will be added in the mix.

I also intend to make him compatible with every existing Midnight Bliss standard, and to introduce a new, accurate-to-Darkstalkers animation standard (unless there's already an existing one? I'm pretty sure there isn't)

EDIT: Also, it's a little fucking late innit
Nevermind, there's nothing I can do

Ack!

Sorry, should've I'm explained that I'm not accepting palettes now; just showing off a proof of concept of what the separation might look like if I skipped doing the outlines. But all those palettes you made did a great job at showing that the outline doesn't really need to be separated!.I'll be sure to add those palettes once the separation is actually done, though! :)

... but I'm still not sure what I'm gonna be doing with Demitri. I do want to finish him before I jump back to updating the rest of my characters, but this separation stuff is giving me a headache, and I haven't even started yet! I may do a limited separation for the initial release, and then come back to it later, or maybe even skip the separation entirely, indefinitely. This is definitely gonna be more challenging than Rolento, and I'm not sure i can pull it off by myself (I didn't even manage Rolento on my own, KoopaKoot did ton of work on that too).

What's that darkened area in the middle of the hurricane FX? Hopefully it's not the effect and it's just a stage effect.
It's indeed the effect! It's supposed to have that hole, and it looks great in motion, trust me!

Or just watch this unfinished preview video that'll be going up on my website when Joe is officially released!

No problem, I figured it wasn't a final template (single sprite, no FX, etc.) and just wanted to see some different color schemes on it.  I can update them whenever you get it finalized.

Agreed.  I've come to embrace the outline - it's just not worth the extra time tracing everything out, and if palette makers spend a little more time planning their color schemes, you'll hardly notice it anyway.

Oh I see... I like coloring FXs so when I saw those... Well it's really better this way then!

Removing the outline is more of a wet dream for people that make palettes and separate spritesets, but in the end it is extremely difficult to sort consistently on separations (consistent being the key word here) and well sorted palettes with the correct amount of contrast can make the outline look acceptable enough anyways.

Just keep the outline and separate the necessary. Removing the outline is an absolute bonker task, especially for cartoony looking sprites like Vampire Savior spritesets... oh lord.
Chilling

yo, @felineki: where did this animation appear?

it's listed as a taunt in your .air, but I can't recall ever seeing it in any of the DS games, or even CFJ.

Though it's about Demitri right now, I think I should say it anyway: Ken's intro against QB's Terry isn't working (haven't tried it against Vyn's).  Terry does his animation, but Ken defaults to his random intros.

I checked his system for the intro against Terry and I think a few lines of code are missing.
