how do you change the state of the opponent using an attack? like if I do an attack and the opponent is in the air, they will automatically be hit on the ground.

A custom state with a posset's y value set to 0. You'll have to change them back to a gethit state accordingly, though. gl

It seems like you may be asking two different questions.
Do you want the opponent to SNAP to the floor and get hit? Because you can use
Snap = P2bodydist X, 0
in the hitdef.

And if you want to have P2 go back to being in the air or be on the ground after the custom state, you can just use a particular value for the SelfState.
You could use the air hit reactions or the ground hit reactions, or just pick statedef 0 or 40.
