Resolution question.

There was a topic where a user asked about resolutions,  and someone told the dude instead of using lets say 1280x720 to use something like 960x 600
cause it looked exactly the same, my question is,  whats the formula behind it ? how do I calculate the number for 1280x960 ? if it looks exactly the same, there's no reason for me to run such a high resolution like this.
Thanks in advance.

For width=960 you'll actually need to use 960x540 for your resolution. It's all ratios.
Typical widescreen is 16:9. You can use this calculator to figure them out.
