It makes me so happy to see you back, Sean! Knowing that you returned and you're working on SHADEs of Manhattan again is amazing! Your characters, your ideas, how much you improved in all these years. I always loved your characters. I know I keep saying this but it's great to see you back, dude!

Basically, what HadeS said. Looking forward to Shades 3. Not a lot of time in my life left for mugen anymore, but this project and a handful of others always make me check back every few months. Keep up the good work Sean.

What would it do?

He either is talking about v-trigger, the thing you did in CvtW, blood heat mode, or something else in general. Either way, just make the game how you want it....(now that I think about it, was the game going to play like SHADEs 2 but with more KoF mechanics?)

Edit: just read the first page, combo of many things.

Maybe something like X-Factor in UMVC3, T.O.P. in Garou or Pandora in SFxT (minus the dumb short-ass timer). Something OP but that can only be used once.

That's kinda what DMs are, although as I've been updating characters to the new system, DMs have become Low Health AND L3 required. That's not permanent though, still considering the Desperation/Determination thing.

I'm tired of updating people right now so I'm about to start spriting for the first new character. Here's the updated list of who the new characters will be:

Castle
Elle
After Image
Lynch
Cronen
The Monolith

The first three will need original sprites. Lynch and Cronen are members of The Collection Agency who will be edits/headswaps of The Specialist and Solid Snake respectively (they will have original special moves and a few unique normals). Think of them as bonus characters, sort of. The Monolith is a sub-boss I'm adding that will be an edit of my Mr. X sprites.

If I get these characters done within a reasonable time-frame, I may add one or two more in (most likely Donny Brooks, Gospel, and/or Relay). I had also started spriting a character called The Renaissance Man, and have several animations done, but he's a bit of an ambitious character given how many sprites he'll need, so he will get worked on here and there when motivation strikes. I'm also considering ways I can edit some of my other sprite-sets into SHADEs characters the way I edited Rorschach into Dark Nation (and how I'll be creating Lynch, Cronen and Monolith).

I'm going to focus on characters and sprites for now, updating here as often as I can. I'm hoping as I show more work, some people may come aboard and volunteer to help with things like the screenpack and what not.

You mentioned Castle being the hard hitting type.  What ideas you have for his moveset?  Will he have super armor in a few moves?  What will have to deal with projectiles users?

Great to see this project again!

I'm actually kind of back to the drawing board for Castle's moveset because The Monolith is going to be the slow/hard-hitter now. Castle will have limited super armor (despite Monolith being a Mr. X edit, he will not have the super armor) but I'm having a bit of difficulty coming up with unique stuff for him since he's no longer the slow power guy. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Castle can be more of a defensive-oriented type of character.  He can have a unique counter move (think Geese) which if successful can deal devastating combos, but if the counter move whiffs, he can do a second counter move with less active frames and the inability to follow up with combos or during the first whiff counter state he can do a dodge roll backwards by tapping back.

Castle could even be a stock-based character (MvC3 Dormammu type) where certain special moves give certain properties that changes his special moves.  Can vary from OTGs, command grabs, even healing, etc.

Yeah, make Castle into the bait and switch type fighter with a power/defense switch system that rewards careful players. Burning or Fortified, and they can use this buff to their attacks based on what you need. What exactly do you have in plan for Castle?

Well since he was originally going to be a Mr. X edit he had a lot of those slow, hard-hitting moves, but now I'm not sure. Maybe give him a military-precision type thing, I could definitely do counters since I'm not sure if Moses Maddigan will be in the new game (he needs new sprites bad and I wanna focus on new characters). Maybe Wesker-like piercing strikes, or I could take some inspiration from Heidern, it's a bit all over the place now.

I do like the idea of him having something called Fortify, either as a super or special, that briefly buffs his moves. His powers are that he doesn't feel pain, but maybe I could change that to something like he can manipulate the density of his molecules to make his skin/bones/etc. unbreakable (but he can't phase through stuff, like limit it to he can make them more dense but never less dense than a normal human). That could play into him having piercing-strikes and stuff like that and explain him being able to take super-human levels of punishment.

If I do that, his specials would look something like:

Fortify (briefly buffs attacks and/or adds a couple hits of super-armor)
Counter (high/mid and low, how does Geese handle this? He has one that counters high/mid and then one just for low attacks, right?)
Piercing Strike (hits in the mid-section area, surprising speed, go-to offensive tool)
Maybe a command grab?

His movement speed could be low but his actual strikes deceptively fast, so he has to get in on you but once he is he doesn't throw big lumbering blows or anything, quick, pointed strikes and stuff.

I'm just kind of throwing stuff out there, lol

A stock-based powerhouse character may give him a good niche for a unique playstyle.  The goal can be to use Fortify for early buffs and go for the rushdown.  To balance, he'd have no projectiles (so no keepaway options to get the boosts safely).  I would say have Fortify give both buffs (Maybe QCB+LK/HK) and it would be possible to stack both but there will have to be a cooldown time before Castle can summon Fortify.  BTW, the buffs I have in mind apply to his Special moves so his normals don't benefit from them

His Standing HP goes something like this.  It will have slightly higher start-up, but carries auto-guard properties and upon contact, the opponent collides towards the wall (wall splat).  This normal cannot be cancelled into any specials or supers or Desperations.  It's risky to do it as a corner combo but the reward is very high as it can be followed with any other combos.  If done mid-range, this gives him the option to continue rushing or call Fortify for the buffs.
*He'll have the target combo of LP>HP for move cancelling tho so one BnB startup could be C.LPx2>LP>HP>Piercing Strike>Super

I believe Piercing Strike should be his main special tool.  QCF+LP can have him move slightly forward, slightly safe on block, negates projectiles (or even better reflect them!).  Good for combos and for defense and gives him an opportunity for Fortify buffs when the opponent is on the ground.  Combine this with the enhancement buff and he'll have a fantastic offense tool for combo enders and devastating damage upon counter hit.   QCF+HP variant however loses the projectile negation, unsafe on block, tricky to combo, but has Castle move very fast on impact and creates a wall bounce on hit.  Combine this with Super Armor buffs and he'll have a deadly tool in storage to bypass threats but if used carelessly, the opponent can punish.

He would need a DP which would be similar to Haggar's Violent Axe in terms of how it would look.  It's pretty basic;  sends the opponent flying giving time for Fortify buffs, decent anti-air, and another good tool for offense.  Benefits the buffs for Super Armor and/or Power enhancement.  Of course, they aren't safe on block even with buffs.

His command grabs go like this.  HCF+LK has fast start-up but deals less damage.  Decent wake-up tool if the opponent is close.  HCF+HK has him walking forward but this command grab deals slightly higher damage (think Injustice Solomon Grundy) and when given Fortify Super Armor buffs, Castle takes no damage, can't be grabbed, and is in a position for another Fortify Buff.

Counter should be reserved as as Super move instead of a special (think Cammy/Fei-Long Ultra 2 in USF4).  Regardless of where he's hit, he'll do a fierce body blow sending the opponent upwards, giving him time for to call Fortify.  If he activates it and nothing happens during the active frames, he remains idle, giving him a huge risk for punish.

Another Super move I have in mind.  He would do a massive hammer fist for a Lv.1.  Quick start-up, benefits the buffs, hits overhead, super armor and good range.  Fortify buffs gives him auto-guard on it.

Finally, another Super gives him all buffs at once!  Maybe this could be his Desperation move as a trump card.  After using it, he gets a timer for all buffs active, but after time runs out, he loses the ability to call Fortify for the rest of the round so you'll end up playing a weaker version of him, while still possible to turn the tables.

Took a while to think all this, heh.  This is all just some ideas to at least fit with the character's background while presenting a unique playstyle.

@Cazaki

Thanks man, hope you can beta test stuff when it's ready, your feedback has been super valuable to me

@Kirishima

That is super in-depth and I'll definitely be keeping all of it in mind as he's developed. I'll get into the specifics of this once I'm done with his standard action and required sprites.

This still needs some edits but I've been working on it for a couple of hours and just want to post something, lol

The yellow trim on his shoulders, coat and wrists will be done with color separation. Both anims are the same, the first is the default palette, the second is what I'm considering for his new default palette. Green definitely looks more military, but the blue and yellow is a little more unique. Thoughts?

Blue-Purple stands out for me.

BTW, have you considered making a sub-board (like your past versions) seeing as you are back on this project?
