WIP Frontend for MUGEN using Game Maker

A project using Game Maker 8.0 to make a frontend for MUGEN using QuickVS commands under the hood. This is for now kind of a proof-of-concept about the possibilities of a frontend with MUGEN, like extra modes and minigames (like Story, Missions, or Minigames like "Smash the Car" as in the video), unlockables, possible key remapping from the interface, character and stage selection with animated characters or custom animations, secret requeriment characters in Arcade, and possibly even use MUGEN as a kind of separate engine for a entire game built in another engine (like GMK or Clickteam Fusion). One example of a MUGEN game using a frontend is Mortal Kombat Trilogy Extended.

I've worked on making a game or two with GameMaker. I think version 6.
This is pretty awesome. So many people want to be able to record victories between rounds. This seems like it could possibly do that.

The one thing I've always wanted was 2v2 to be able to use 4 controllers.

you can code stuff in Game Maker but you cant run a application like OBS Studio to record your screen?

The idea is cool, but you should get OBS to record your gameplay/demonstration.

If done right, it could expand M.U.G.E.N. into the next level.

EDIT:

New additions/fixes:
-Menus are now entirely keyboard controlled!
-Stage Select overhauled for keyboard controls
-Character Select Screen and Stage Select now working with Player 1 in all modes...and Player 2 in Versus! (P2 can also control Main Menu)
-You can now select a palette depending of the button pressed! This one is kind of a futureproof for a implementation of the selected char palette being shown upon selection, but at the time it can set a specific palette from button used to select.
-Arcade mode implemented! You can make it use a randomizer or set certain characters to be faced at certain points
-Frontend recognizes match results appropiately (and if you exit the game early). This was being worked on last video but not exactly shown.
-Sounds! (yes, sounds)
-Bugfix on character selection animations
-Hidden/EX characters in CSS! (You'll see when the video is ready)

Notes:
-At the moment, Arcade and VS CPU are only handled for Player 1.
-Haven't added some character animations/select animations in CSS. You can see that when I hover over some characters that don't change the last character animation.
-I have to fix a issue I had when I attempted to make the SSS show the selected characters (like a VS screen); the portraits in SSS were disabled in this video because of it. For some reason it didn't show the proper portrait of the selected char under most conditions.
-Maybe something else I forgot

To do:
-Round and difficulty selection
-Saving and loading settings
-Unlockable characters
-Hidden characters that are fought meeting certain conditions in Arcade
-Enable control remapping in frontend (and make it also work to rebind keys in MUGEN engine at the same time)
-Checking current state of Minigames (haven't touched it for a while) and fixing what's broken
-Training and Mission modes
-Tag implementation
-Maybe yet another thing I have forgot :P

Thanks for all the support guys; with the potential of this project and the fact that I got hooked strong again into MUGEN recently, I will be working a lot at this. Wish me luck!

Excellent initiative this project seems very promising I also thought of doing something of the type but I did not develop anything however if I can help something one of the things I would like to implement is in the arcade mode the credit function press start to play too I was thinking of mounting the command line with the tag mode and in this case would give the option to choose two characters but are only suggestions as had been measured

Hey this is really cool!

Somethung that would be helpful is if you could have multiple defs in the characters folders and you could select the version of the character you wanted to use after you selected them.

The game I'm making will have tag And I wanted to implement assists in such a fashion. Do you think you can do that?

Yes, it's possible to create a Tag/Simul mode and select alternate defs in a character folder as well.

That's Amazing!

I assume you're going to implement winquotes and special winquotes vs. characters?\

Are you going to be able to select colours on the screen like a real game?

Good luck on this project, I would love to use this!

Sorry to ask a bunch of things of you, I just would really love to use something like this for my full game, and have been looking into it myself.

New update showcasing missions, unlockable characters and stages, and some more neat stuff (I also "accidentally" forgot about a image I left in the video...  ;) )

A quick poll to see if I should keep the current menu music, or should I use another one (you can chose keep the current one, select one of two options or suggest yours here). Also, currently adding Title Screen and unlockable characters with portraits ;)
