A Most Arbitrary MUGEN Tournament

Hello all. I've been involved in MUGEN for a while but only very recently involved myself in any of the actual communities. Mysterious0Bob and Amidweiz have both inspired a bit of an itch in me to organize one of them AI tournaments in MUGEN, and with Amidweiz giving me the okay to go ahead while his is still in progress, I'm acting upon that itch. I'll try to keep things brief.

Summary for the uninitiated:
16 teams of 4 AI-controlled characters are set to fight in a ladder format, best two out of three.

Settings:
MUGEN 1.0
8 Difficulty
100% Life
80 second timer (might bump this up to 99 if requested, but I feel that it's enough to allow for fights to finish without letting things drag for too long)
DrKelexo's Alien Soldier screenpack because it's awesome and not gaudy.

Rules/Whatnot:
- No overpowered characters, naturally. The definition of this is of course dependent on the person, but I think I can reasonably come to a conclusion on what's too strong.
- No characters that generally befuddle the average AI, such as those that are too small or have constant super armor.
- Ideally, your characters should have reasonable AI.
- Please link to characters (and AI patches, if you deem them necessary).
- Also, provide a team name, specific palettes if desired, and the order in which you want your team to take, as well as any specific grooves/modes they may come with, otherwise they will be random.
- You may change team members and team names up until the last participant submits their team. Participant 16 should choose wisely!

Assuming 16 people are interested, the entire tournament will be uploaded as one video (probably, just to avoid clutter) to my Youtube channel (which will be linked when (if) it's all done; no need to advertise my rubbish beforehand) with only the minimum required editing. I promise no "wacky" effects, commentary, or fanfictiony plot garbage.

Also, feel free to suggest stages and music for use, but no guarantees they'll make it.

Should I have difficulty finding 16 people but still encounter a reasonable number of interested people, I have a team of my own in mind that I'll throw out, and/or fall back on friends.

I think it's good to set them up this way. That way when the previous tournament is done a new one is ready to be shown. Me and you could do this kind of thing as I was thinking of doing a tourney myself.

From what i've seen Bebum Ryo and Cursed Seal are two overpowered i'd say.

Yeah, after some testing, I have to agree with Memes never die. Bebum Ryo and Curse Seal are a little too nuts, I think. Do you have replacements in mind? Also, I can't seem to get Adel working; they don't show up in Vselect and manually adding them in select.def doesn't seem to work. And by EX version, were you referring to the AI Patch included with Riesbyfe?

as for adel you must rename/replace all unicode character to readable character in your pc or simply remove the unicode character. amidweiz done that to make it works.
i think you need to remove it from def and all file that use unicode
ignore about the not ex words . just download it and test it.

I got Adel working (thank you for that, by the way), though I'm disabling his mode system because I think it pushes him over the line of overpowered. I've tossed my reasoning below if you're really curious as to why.

Anyone is welcome to challenge me, by the way, on my accusations of what's acceptable or not. If participants can come to an agreement that a character is fine even if I'm against it, I'll allow it. The opposite is also allowed, to an extent.

A solid team, but that Terry's AI is kind of lame. I tried poking around a little for an AI patch, but didn't find anything. Do you have an AI patch handy, or an alternate version of Terry/an alternate character you'd prefer to use? You can stick with it if you really want, I'm just letting you know in case you'd prefer a more active character.

It's a lot to explain as there is different methods depending on the Mugen version of the character. I'll patch the characters, the palettes will all be assigned as the 2nd palette.

I assume you wanted me to use Yuki's AI patch included in the character folder? Unfortunately, after some testing, I'd have to veto that as well (the less perfect shield-addicted AI patch I'd be alright with).

Oh ok then, (though if I wanted an AI that was truly shield/parry addicted I'd just give you that kirito with his AI patch set to max or Umihei's Q at max parry settings and though god rugal does parry a lot he does present holes when fighting) I'll replace him with This

Yeah, here there are! I switched out ghost rider (he was poorly made after re-checking him, remembered him from an old build from years back), and put the team in an ideal order. Also, I can easily throw out another team in if needed. Thanks for hosting man!

The description explains a few things I won't bother repeating here. Also, the last stage and music combo is indeed an homage, but it's not intended as a jab toward either team that made it to the finals. Anyway, 'twas fun, and I'd love to do another one of these sometime down the line. Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

Yeah, in hindsight, maybe I should've been just a little more strict with who was allowed (and not only from the winner's team, mind you). I'm at least glad the matchup wasn't an absolute steamroll.

The last match was quite a good one (TBH I was expecting to lose to yamino gun's team with all the GGesq 12th palettes but I guess better AI won out) and yea I can see why my team might be a little "hax". (Rikuo's one mainly by exploiting the fact AI's tend to perfect block everything so it just does it's unblockable super you have to avoid or hit but if you're very offensive like Rashu Mon he's not to much of a problem) All in all it was a good tournament and now I'll have to keep uploading and rendering mine (The render time is more like 3 hours rather than 5 but that's still quite a bit for one video)

Great tournament! Fun little thing that introduced me to a lot of characters. I even enjoyed my team's matches, for as short as they were (going up againist a finalist-worthy opponent out of the gate. ;-:)

Thank ya both, Strider and Amidweiz. And honestly, I think my favorite part of these tournaments is that they introduce me to characters (as well as stages and music) I probably wouldn't have otherwise come upon.

I'd say my team sucked. Shovel Knight and Doodlebob's A.I. were too weak for a tournament. They almost had it in the first round but got rekt in the second. Given that some characters are a bit OP (I remember my team getting rekt by a full screen move that dealt a lot of damage) and of course MissingNo. so tbh I should've also chosen characters that are a bit OP (that kinda applies to Dancing Banana and Thanos) Anyway, I liked this and the next time I will take the opportunity to use a better team.

Is it possible you could release a version of MUGEN set up with all content in this pack?

Also, if you ever do a sequel, I don't think we should completely get rid of these teams. If people want them not to be used that'd be fine, but it'd be more fun, (and crazy), if we just added another 16 characters to the mix along with all the original teams. *shrug* But I bet it'll  be awhile before you want to do this again.

I personally believe it was less that your team was inherently bad and more that you just went up against characters that were more proficient, AI-wise. If I've learned anything about MUGEN, it's that matchups are very much real; perhaps your team would've done better against a different team than my own. And hey, you pushed my team back to Diavolo in the first round, so it wasn't a total steamroll. (I'm also kind of surprised Thanos got demolished like he did, all things considered)

I do kind of like the idea of a 32-team tournament (ideally with 32 different participants, but 2 teams from 16 people would also be fine), though that would take a remarkable amount of time to record, edit, render, upload, and watch. It took me 10.5 hours just to render this tournament, ignoring all the time it took to record and all that, and the finishing product is 2.5 hours in length. Like I said, I like the idea... I'm just probably not the person to carry it out. Also, I'm not really opposed to getting another tournament together sooner rather than later, but I fear that "tournament fatigue" could arise if they're organized too frequently.

I'd be willingly to share the workload with you if you want. We could find a way to make it work, and set up a proper event for August.

But I agree, after that we should wait. Since we have another on site already, and we want these to still feel like an event.
