- Azrael should now be properly grabable even while his Guard Point is active during Hornet Bunker, Valiant Crash and Sentinel Dump.
- The backwards Throw should no longer require backwards inputs if you want to follow up with anything when it does damage.
- Tiger Magnum, Cobra Strike and Leopard Launcher will now all wallstick the opponent while the Valiant Charger w/UW effect is active.
- Fixed a HUGE and ancient issue with Azrael not guarding properly at seemingly random times.
- Fixed the inputs for air jumps and super jumps. They should both be much more responsive now.
- Fixed a slight delay on Valiant Charger activation after hitting with Valiant Crash w/UW.
- Fixed the opponent returning straight into their base idle state after breaking a throw, if they didn't have a custom animation for it.
- Distortion Drive supers, and alot of other moves that were previously unavailable, are now usable during Valiant Charger.
- Distortion Drive supers should now have the same background darken effect last the entire move, rather than it suddenly becoming brighter midway through.

So with the success of Kagura Mutsuki, I laid plans for more Blazblue characters that I would look into, after a nice long break.

The one who would follow was Azrael, and just like Kagura, he's based on his CPEX version, has all the moves from the game, and is about as close to the source as I could get him.

As per usual, there's a Mugen 1.1 and a Mugen 1.0 version, and as always I recommend the 1.1 version, because Mugen 1.0 has lower quality sprites and effects.

Exposition time:

It hasn't been easy. Even though I already had a solid foundation in Kagura to start with, it would still take hundreds of hours to build up this guy.
Azrael had the same problem as all other Blazblue characters: Most of his effect sprites are 3d textured and pretty damn hard to rip, and unlike Kagura, Azrael had almost no standard 2d sprites of his own to work with. Therefore, I've had to heavily improvise: Azrael uses more sprites from other games than Kagura, and is also using a bunch of the 2d sprites available from various other Blazblue characters. As a result, Azrael now has alot more claw and fire in his moves.

Well, I had my share of fun figuring out how to make him work, and learning how Dust and Vanishing (Banishing?) attacks work in Arcsys games, because Azrael has his own versions of both.

Anywho, with this, I think it's high time that I put away my Mugen resources and fade away. After having made 27 LF2 and Touhou characters, followed by  two Blazblue monstrocities, both eating hundreds of hours for their completion, I think it's about high time that I call it quits. My Mugen interest has all but faded, and I've long since left the main reason I even got into it in the first place.

That means that I won't be making anymore Blazblue characters, and probably not anything else either, though I did consider making Izayoi after Azrael, but that was in his early stages. The most I'll be doing is fixing any gamebreaking bugs, if there's any that have escaped my testing.

PS: Kagura Mutsuki was updated just the other day. The newest version includes all the fixes and improvements I discovered while making Azrael.

As much as I want Azrael to have his Panzer Strike move, what with iframe reversals like that being highly abusable in Mugen AI (I'm looking at you, Kagura's Ryuujinshou), BBCPEX is the most complete resource-wise with sprites and models, and, well, last I checked, there's still alot of that lacking when it comes to Central Fiction, so I decided to make CPEX my main game back when I first started on Kagura.

Wouldn't do to call it a CF Style character if they don't look the part in the HUD atleast.

Well, cp or cf, i like him. Its one of best i have on mugen,. Pancer strike its a nice one, i like it.

  • Shortcuts are the only way to access throws, barrier/crush trigger and overdrive; not exactly a fan of that
  • Back throw still has inputs on the way you started your throw from so you have to reverse everything if you want to cancel from it
  • There's a weird delay you have to wait for to boost forward after doing a successful crit'd valiant
  • Leopard Charger after crit'd valiant's boost only does a wallbounce, no wallstick
  • Can't perform specials from valiant boost state
  • Can't normally doublejump forward or back; have to press up then forward/back
  • No superjump outside of jump cancels?
  • Screen unnecessarily darkens during superflash
Other than those and Sentinel Dump looking kinda jank, cool beans! Liking this a lot.

I figured that between those and Rapid Cancel, it would end up as a big mess to have them all on the 4 standard buttons. That, and I kinda wanted to give exclusive use for the B and C buttons.

Yeah, he doesn't actually turn until he leaves the throw state (even though the sprites make it look like he does), and I should've fixed that long ago.

Not entirely sure, but I think I might've accidently made it inaccessable slightly longer than it was supposed to be on the first hit.

Oh, TM/CS/LL don't have the Valiant states. I guess I just assumed no one would use them as part of it, but I see now he can do it in the source game.

I assume you mean the Distortion Drive supers, and looking at them, it does indeed appear that you can't use them during Valiant Charger, because they're set to not be usable during any airborne state (which Valiant Charger is).

Looking further into it, there may be other moves like that too. Huh.

The double jump thing is something I've had issues with since Kagura. I'm actually not entirely sure why the inputs aren't properly working.

And yeah, I've never been entirely satisfied with how the earth tearing moves turned out (Sentinel, 2C, etc), but those were the best sprites I could find for it. The originals are, after all, some of the many effects from the source game that cannot be ripped normally.

Well, allow me to get to fixing as many of these as I can.

No. I'll fix issues with Azrael, but I won't start giving him new stuff, even if he gains it later in CF, and it would put him more on par with Kagura's Ryuujinshou spamming arse.
Heck, I don't even have the means to test whether Panzer Strike would work (and look) as it does in the game.

Just thought I would point that out in case there was anything else you'd like to check out. There was also a thing where sometimes recovering from a slide state would often put Azrael back in slide state and it could be done several times in a row; but that may just be an incompatibility.

Happy to know you're looking to fix those issues I mentioned!
Sad that this is your final work, I would've been looking forward to more BB stuff from you.

Thanks to some valuable feedback for Azrael, I've managed to nail down and fix a bunch of issues that have been affecting human players ever since Kagura Mutsuki was released.

Of course, this also means that Kagura has been updated too, but I already wrote that the last update I posted on his thread was the final one, so uh, I'll just leave a note here instead. His changelog is on the onedrive.

Funny you'd show up again right as I was ready to release the update with the fixes. Suddenly there was even more stuff to do, hah.

For the slide state, I tried testing the two versus each other, and it seems like Azrael tries to enter his recovery states but is instantly kicked back into the slide state. I looked further into it in Platinum's coding, and it seems that if you don't atleast enter the standard Laying Down state after sliding across the ground, she won't drop her targeting, and coupled with a few other things, it'll cause Azrael to get kicked back into the slide state again.

I fixed this by just having Azrael be slightly above ground when he uses his recovery, instead of at 0. Not 100% sure why that works, but eh. Hopefully this won't cause trouble against anyone else.

As for the guard state, I made ALOT of investigation into this bit. Both Azrael and Kagura have had issues in the past where they just won't block properly at seemingly random times, usually against attacks outside the regular guard distance that most characters have.

I think I've finally figured out why though, and as expected, the reason was within the stupidly convoluted barrier states I made as one of the first things, back when I first made Kagura.

Maybe now Azrael and Kagura can finally guard properly.



And now I'm tired. All this ate most of the day, hah.

And then simply add "triggerall = palno != 12" under the "type = varset" of the No Multiple Uses state.

The sprite rips for Azrael himself doing the move should be out there somewhere if you search them out, but as for the move effects, I imagine it's another 3d texture, so you'd have to get creative with it.

In any case, I can't really stop you from making the move if you want it, but if you're going to do it, it oughta be as damn well close to the real deal as can be. You'd likely atleast need to have BB Central Fiction, where it came from, to test it a hundred times.

Try the newest version. I messed around with his AI a few days ago, and it MIGHT be slightly better now.

I don't really think it's going to get much better than this, though.
Between the limitations of Mugen as well as the fighting balance in Blazblue itself, Azrael (and Kagura) will always have alot of weaknesses, and can be rather inconsistent. Not much I can do about it, since source accuracy was the goal of these BB characters, even if it bothers me a bit when a character 1-frame grabs Azrael or Kagura out of a high-speed move.

For me at least, you did a excellent job with these two. Do you thried the susanoo and izanami by terumen?. These are my two favorites after Azrael, and are good.

There's that 12p intro a few people have asked for. And a few other updates I guess. Check the changelog if you're interested.

Hopefully this'll finally be enough with the updates.
