I wonder why it is suggested we do some really overcomplex way using a different program to turn our images into PCXs when FF can do that all for you in about 5 seconds.
And you also created a palette for your PCX sprite using Fighter Factory, using as base a non-indexed image ? If you managed to do it, by all means, tell me, that will surely oversimplify the tutorial.

I will update the tutorial when I get motivation back, with some of the feedback posted here and in other topics.

I edited my last post which I doubt you saw, so check that again. As for how to do it, I am shocked that someone as knowledgeable as you in Mugen stuffs does not know the first thing a mugen creator should know. Here's a link to the vid that taught me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xavSAKRuu8
It's an old tutorial though and the maker (BlackChaos on this forum) says he plans to eventually update them. Hope this helps, as you've helped me a lot already.
I am trying to set up a Guardian Heroes Mugen Project. Before I do I'm trying to collect resources at http://mugenguild.com/forumx/index.php?topic=88937.msg770946#msg770946
I am a sprite ripper as well as a character maker, and I do both damn well! I am always looking for projects to join. (I suck at solo projects)
I am a beta-tester and am well known for being very pedantic. I will find EVERY problem with your character.

Interesting, and quite useful. :)

I recall reading that using FF for palettes was unreliable, hence I never used it. But if it works for you and you find it much simpler, then you better use this method. As said in the tutorial, I just present my method, and I'm not claiming it's the best one. I'd have to check how fast it is with images containing 200 colors (because transferring them one by one on the other palette is clumsy), and I'm pretty sure this is problematic for images with more than 256 colors.

Anyway, I'll have to update the tuto for use with the Gimp (which is free) and link to this Youtube tutorial, for those who'd prefer it.

For some reason, changing the floor sprite and saving does nothing. When I go back to Mugen the stage is unchanged. Is Fighter Factory incompatible with the new Mugen or something? I even tried it again to check if idid something wrong, but every single time nothing changed.

EDIT: Yeah, it's the new Mugen that's doing it. It's kinda weird. When FF couldn't open the new SFF file I replaced it with the old version and the stage still worked fine. Since I was dealing with the right SFF anyway, why didn't it work?
I will not give you whatever time you wasted reading this back.

Was having some problems with my screenpack until I read this. Forgot entirely about how to use trans in the coding. Thanks for posting it.

I've never used the new Mugen 1.0 to create stages (one day, for sure, but not immediately). Hence, I don't know much about the new parameters, and I can't guaranty 100% of the stuff I've written is correct for the new Mugen.

@ MrSteve81 : glad this could help even for non-stage creations.

I was going to use this tutorial, but it starts out in photoshop. And unfortunatley gimp doesn't have the Image -> Mode -> Color Table option. So I honestly can't tell if it's useful or not. Do you plan on releasing an update for gimp users? because I can't quite figure out the gimp equivalents for the life of me, and I"m having terrible luck finding out on youtube and google.

Yeah, they have basically the same options, but the creators of Gimp decided to switch the place of many things ... :(

"Image -> Mode -> Indexed" for the conversion to indexed colors.
"Dialogs -> Colormap" for the Color Table.

well when I do that, this is one of the closest option I get to doing what you're doing with photoshop. and it's not quite the same.

Is there some kind of vertical parallax for backgrounds, if so how would I adjust it so it moves in the right direction when my character jumps?

This was really helpful.
Especially the part about the palettes.

It's really helping me put my Lifebars together.
My signature is also boring.
