I got a DC recently and took the shell off to clean it and saw this suspicious
looking piece of circuit by the modem.  I can tell its some type of mod
since it doesn't look professional but im not sure what exactly it is.
Can anybody help me identify what type of mod my console has?

You should make a topic about that at assemblergames.com. Someone over there will definetly know what that is.

Thanks for the tip I'm definitely creating an account
there tomorrow to try and find out what this is.

Ive looked at various mods online and none look like
mine. Funny thing is the store I bought it from had 5
DC's I looked at before I picked this one and they all
looked like someone tried to pry out the modem with
a screwdriver, and the screw above the modem was
missing.. I'm starting to suspect all the DC's they had
were modded like mine.

I'm not familiar with the DC hardware and features, what is the metal port that is connected to? Video signal? Extension port?

This mod doesn't contain any chip, so it's not a modchip for playing backups or games from other regions.

It includes a capacitor and a resistance, so most probably it was used as a hack for PAL-NTSC conversions or maybe to prevent loss of data in volatile memory if this was somehow an extension port?

I'm not sure, that metal piece and the circuit are both
"hot glue gunned" onto the console so its definitely
part of the mod.

I can play CDR's of JAP games if that helps but I'm not
sure if CDR versions of other region games needed a
mod or not.

I overlooked that part. That is definetly an sd card mod. You'll need to boot into dreamshell with a disc to use it.

No way, oh shit if its an SD card reader I'm excited!
I'm gonna look for dreamshell and see if it works.

Any of you guys familiar with dreamshell?
Aapparently its an Linux based os that
lets you do all sort of cool stuff like
flash bios, ripped games, play them of SD,
play video disk and some other stuff.

If you have experience with it let me know,
I'm trying to find out if the keyboard and
mouse is necessary and a SCART cable.

I can 100% confirm its a SD card reader because I just
Inserted one in and it fits perfectly, now all I need is a
new 32GB SD card and I can play all my backups of the
card and dont have to worry about wearing out the lens.

I asked the guy who sold it to me if they sold modded
consoles and he said "No that's illegal!" Lol I feel like
going back and showing him what he sold me just
to fuck with him a bit.

I'm certain he knows because ALL the DC's they had have
this cutout above the modem to shove a SD card into.

Thanks for the help guys!

You still need to use the gd rom drive to boot into dreamshell so you're still wearing it out. The only way to prevent that is to replace the gd rom drive with a gdemu or a usb gd rom.

True but at least with dreamshell and games running of
SD the drive wont be constantly reading from the disk.
