Everyone here's calling it a group of death, not really recognizing we're just not that good.

Least your country has SOME actual chances to go to knockout stage. Mexico is fucked and doomed to be Germany's bitch... once again. :|

Australia could beat South Korea so Mexico shouldn't have any trouble, and you can at least hope for a decent match against Sweden. Australia's going out 0-3 guaranteed.

And against all odds, Iceland got a draw against Argentina, one of the possible world cup winners, and Messi failing a penalty shoot

The theme so far has been the bigger teams not showing up... France won, but they needed technology to save their asses from the Aussies while Brazil, Argentina, Spain and Portugal have been in draws so far. Germany losing is, so far, the biggest shocker of this first wave of group play.

Will this be a theme for the whole event, who knows. The only certain thing is this... my god does Saudi Arabia blow chunks.

Did this four years ago, might as well do it again...

Group A: It's very straight forward. Russia and Uruguay have 6 points while Egypt and Saudi Arabia have 0 points. The latter are playing for pride while the former are playing for position into the Round of 16. The winner plays next Saturday in the opening game of the Round of 16 while the loser gets an extra day of rest, but could run into either Spain, Portugal or Iran as runner ups.

Group B: Spain and Portugal are tied on top with 4 points (The Spaniards have the edge via Fair Play points, which are deductions for yellow and red cards. Spain has one yellow card while Portugal has two yellow cards. Those are worth -1 point) with Iran 1 point back and Morocco out. The big game will be Portugal-Iran because much will be on the line... A Portugal win or draw means they move on and Iran is out while an Iran win means they move on and Portugal would need a Morocco win over Spain to move on. Spain can move on with a win over Morocco no matter what happens in the Portugal-Iran game.

Group C: France's win today over Peru allows them to move on and sending the South American side to the eliminated pile. This leaves two teams for the runner up slot: Denmark and Australia. The two drew in the early game.. So, what that means is this: A draw for Denmark gets them into the next round while the Aussies need a win over Peru by 2 or more goals AND a France win over Denmark to move on.

Group D: Argentina was all but left for dead after Croatia smacked them around on Thursday. They got a reprieve when Nigeria defeated Iceland 2-0 today. Croatia is the only team to advance right now, leaving one slot between the other three teams. To take the group, Croatia needs just a draw against Iceland. Nigeria needs an upset victory over Argentina to advance. Iceland needs a win over Croatia and a draw between Nigeria and Argentina while Argentina needs a win over Nigeria by at least 5 goals and a Croatia victory over Iceland.

Group E: Costa Rica, who made a Cinderella run four years ago, fell into the eliminated pile after losing to Brazil today. Brazil and Switzerland have 4 points with Serbia one point back. The winner of the Serbia-Brazil game will move on for sure. Switzerland needs at least a draw against Costa Rice to advance.

Group F: Mexico won, but Germany pulled a rabbit out its ass to survive against Sweden. This means everyone has a chance to move on. Mexico needs at least a draw, Germany needs at least a draw against South Korea and a Mexico victory over Sweden. Sweden needs at least a draw against Mexico and a Germany loss to South Korea and, somehow, South Korea is still alive. They need a win over Germany by at least 3 goals and a Mexico win over Sweden.

Group G: Similar to Group A. Belgium and England have moved on, Panama and Tunisia are out. The latter are playing for pride while the former are playing for position.

Group H: Japan leads Senegal after the two teams drew today via fair play points (-3 to -5) while Columbia ended Poland's hope to move on. Japan needs at least a draw to advance while the winner of Senegal-Columbia will move on.

Holy shit Toni Croos.

Germany vs Sweden was nerve wrecking. Germany breaking the tie at the last minute throws the group into disarray, the Mexico has small chance not only to lose its lead but not making it to the next round, Sweden absolutely needs to win its next game against them (and preferably by large margin) and Germany only needs to win against a demoralized Korea.

If both Sweden and Germany win, every team but Korea will have 6 points, relying on goal difference to make it to the knockout stage. If Mexico and Korea win, every team but Mexico will have 3 points. This is so fucking exciting.
