How detailed can you get with Level layers?

Hey there! I'm new to the development thing and I wanted to know just how detailed you can get with the back grounds? I wanted to make the layers using photoshop but I've seen so many times were theres been color loss and holes in the details and such. Can any one give tips, or direct me to a topic that can help me out? ^^;  (another thing is, how big do I make a level's details for high res? o_O )
