I'd talked about doing this about a year ago but now I'm going to actually do it!

I'm going to add 1.1 Filter options to releases.
Out of the current Icons Tools and Misc will not need 1.1 variants, correct?

While we are at it the portrait scene keeps growing more and more as well. Especially with screen pack specific themes. I considered asking if a new board should be made for these since they are generally more open to multiple contributors in the same threads. But I think just making a Portrait with 1.1 variant would work well enough.

Are there any other popular themes that should be made into icons for the filter before I start making these and sending them to Val?

HD icons. HD everything but pal/tools/misc.

I think I said this before, but I think we should, at the very least, give some thought to changing our current two board paradigm from older mugen/mugen 1.0 and beyond to mugen 1.0/mugen 1.1

On one hand combining the boards would be a smart idea because it's dumb to have so many boards. But they are all useful and active at least.
On the other hand there are so many releases that I kinda like having it split to give more opportunities for front page exposure.

If we were to nix the older mugen board would we need to make new icons for them too?

EDIT:Fixed phone auto correct typo

1) Merge old mugen and mugen 1.0 in the new, dauntingly huge new 1.0 board.
2) Create a new 1.1 forum with its own 2 subforums.
3) Ask our users to move their own threads and report 1.1 releases so we can move them to the newest board, through a public announcement .
4)...then we all will have to move a lot of threads :P can't think of a workaround.

Are there enough 1.1 releases by itself to justify that?
Alternate note
Since 1.0 and 1.1 are pretty much the "official" MUGENs wouldn't mixing 1.0 releases and older mugen releases be worse?

There were 31 stages released just in the last 3 months for the Old MUGEN board though.

I think it'd be better just to make a 1.1 icon and keep the boards where they are. The Old MUGEN board is super active and I feel it'd be a huge disservice to merge it with another super active board.

Eh, it isn't THAT active. The earliest post on the first page is from two weeks ago (march 20), it has roughly the same activity as entertainment (earliest 1st pager on march 18); you'd have to dig up to page three in your releases, mugen 1.0 to find post from the same day.

but it's active enough to not just shove it together with the 1.0 one for the sake of giving 1.1 its own board, most I can find being super active in 1.1 is screenpacks and a few stages that usually work with both versions anyway. there's enough there to give it its own forum sure but not enough to just shove two larger and much more active topics together and make a fucking mess.

Keeping three boards is overkill; keeping two boards that aren't actually different since winmugen is mostly forgotten, but with one of them having tags for stuff that isn't backwards compatible with the main engine is ridiculous; the idea of splitting boards is to make specific shit easier to find, not to give inactive threads two extra weeks of exposure.

I'll want to hear more input from other users about this. This would be a big change. I'm still leaning against it just because I think there are less 1.1 releases than Winmugen releases.

That is correct, there're still many users that still create things in WinM (myself included) and still posting own and found releases. I'm an active user in that board and everyday I see at least 1 new thread per day.

Also, I think you should add 1.1 stages icon since they're way different from normal stages (I got no problems with 1.0 stages in my WinM, but 1.1 is more exclusive because of zoom)

A 1.1 icon is an idea that needs to be done.

Speaking of icons, the other boards (Sprite Projects and Resource Release) have a placeholder.
I have some ideas for
- the Resource Release icon:
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

-the Sprite Project something like this:
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty
but with another sprite;

- the Fighter Creator board:
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

On topic,
the board is "Your Releases, Mugen 1.0 +", that "+" includes the 1.1 releases so I think the filter is okay; making another board would be too much. There aren't too many 1.1 creations to warrant a new board (in my opinion).
About the portraits, another filter for them should be enough, I think.

I'm hoping it's due to the holiday weekend. Though I know some staff have been online. Maybe they were for quick checks. Cause I'd think considering to change the boards themselves would be a pretty big deal :/

If no one else speaks about the potential board alterations I'll leave them as is.

I doubt anyone will argue against the 1.1, HD, or the portrait icons.

Edit: Alex: I'll work on the board icons once I finish this part up. I need to find the templates again.

Wow, those icons Alex suggested are just all types of awesome! If you don't mind, I kinda came up with a quick concept for an icon we can use for the "Full Game Development" board:

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

Found the image off the Internet, resized it according to Alex's Sprite Project icon.

What do you think? If you don't mind, I'd be glad to help you out with whatever you need, man. :)

Only way to go is up.

I sure don't mind. Once I get home I'll find the template and post it here. You can fill in as many boards as you want.

This should be the template (I think):
or they are just examples, either way, this should be the size of the board icons.

Yes that's the template. I don't remember if they need to be in a certain order or just putting the new ones on the bottom of this image. I guess for now just add them to the bottom.

There's not enough 1.1 content to warrant its own board and there is likewise more than enough WinMUGEN content to warrant its own board.

It'll probably make sense to have this discussion in a few years, but not right now.

also I don't think portraits need their own board.

Portraits are getting icons. Along with 1.1 variants and more HD variant icons as well. Last chance, is that all the icons we need for releases?

Portrait icons will not need to be in the WinMugen board, correct? There are no differences in Winmugen and 1.0 Mugen portraits. 1.1 on the other hand is different.

All the new HD icons will be added to the WinMugen boards as applicable.

Mugen 1.0 had a grand total of 33 releases by the time it got its own board.

But 1.0 got everyone excited and had lots of people jumping on, and the differences in the engines of Win and 1.0 were much more vast (and thus drew more interest)!

Until there's a surge in 1.1 development, I just can't see much use in it having its own board. It'll happen eventually (provided a stable release comes out, maybe?), but things have remained fairly constant vis-à-vis the number of releases 1.1 has had. The 1.1 beta has been out for a long while, but the frequency of 1.1 releases is still quite small.

Dude, nobody wanted 1.0 when the stable version came out. Don't you remember when every release thread was littered with posts asking for winmugen patches (even when they weren't necessary) ? I'm pretty sure even you had to do some of those!

Getting ahead of our userbase isn't a bad idea and it will us the time tracking down over a hundred threads later.

btw, mugen 1.0's subforums have placeholder icons.

The 1.1 icons will help us track down the 1.1 exclusive threads later too!

When I look at the last post dates for the bottom thread on each specific board and sub board they are not extremely different. Win is trailing in them besides in Found Releases where it is much more recent.
This is with me NOT looking for 1.1 specific stuff. So that means the mix of 1.0 and 1.1 is barely beating the Win releases in 2 out of 3 boards.

There was a lot of suspicion and stuff in the regular userbase to be sure, but there was conversely also a lot of interest on the creative side! Right now a 1.1 board would be mostly empty, and I can't imagine it being brought into existence will spur anyone to develop anything for it. I do think/hope that once a stable release will be the thing that finally kicks 1.1 development into overdrive, though.

Eh it wouldn't be a huge time saver; like JNP said, if we add the new filter icons now, and get people to do so on their own for any future works, we can easily move everything when the need for a 1.1 arises!

winmugen stuff is still being developed by other communities(japan) so if we say, merged found releases we couldnt reliably tell which ones were for which

also i cant pull out the exact numbers but 1.0 got more releases in the first year than 1.1
well the exact criteria is vague but id like to go with what the current trends are.
besides filtering 1.1 stuff is waaaay easier than having to sort out a merged board

In my opinion, dealing with 1.0 primarily, I dont really want 1.1 content with my 1.0.
Having winmugen in with my 1.0 wouldnt be that big of a deal to me. BUT for people with winmugen PCs (yes they're still out there) filtering 1.0 stuff out would suck very bad. I dont recommend putting winmugen with 1.0.
I get excited to see awesome content for 1.0+ only to find out it's 1.1 only. I'd like to see a 1.1 icon and a 1.0 icon. I dont think splitting the board in half would be a huge benefit. I think it'd make the content look more sparse.
When I go to a new forum and there's not a lot of content in the boards I'm looking at, I usually turn away and look for a better spot. This is why I landed here to begin with. Splitting the boards up may turn away people who'd otherwise join.

Right now, when I go looking for new characters/stages I visit the 1.0+ and I usually forget about winmugen releases.  It'd be nice if there was a way to have all 3 be searchable at once. Far as I know winmugen works in 1.1 right? So a 1.1 user would benefit the most.
If you could have a way to have the sub-boards, but make the combination of all 3 searchable... like make a way to select which of the 3 you want to search for. So when I say search for characters I'd get all 3 types popping up in 1 list. For me, it'd be nice if I could have a check box on the 3 types, so I could leave out 1.1.
It wouldnt even be that bad if the 1.1 popped up but had the 1.1 icon. It might make me want to switch over.
