Hi, Welcome to Mugen

I will be your Guide to Getting started in Mugen

Reason for Doing this
I get a lot of pms from New people Asking how to play this game/rom, After a while you get tired of doing this so I figured  that Id just write up one going through the steps and giving examples.

I. Getting Started

A. What Mugen is- (Copied from Wikipedia)

M.U.G.E.N is a 2D fighting game engine designed by Elecbyte and originally released in 1999. Elecbyte distributed beta versions that ran under DOS, Linux, and Windows. The engine allows for anyone to create characters, stages and other game objects through interpreted text files and graphics and sound compilations and it also supports various types of audio formats such as MP3, ADX, OGG and MIDI as background music during gameplay. The engine allows for the type of functionality found in most any commercial 2D fighting game, such as the Street Fighter games produced by Capcom, the Naruto games produced by Bandai, or the King of Fighters games produced by SNK.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B.Where to get Mugen

Now heres where we start. Depending on what type of computer you have tells you which mugen you should get.

WinMugen- for widows computers obviously and this is about the most common one used. You are downloading the patch not the patch fix.

Link- http://unofficial-winmugen.jpn.org/

LinMugen- works for Linux operating systems only. If I am correct there is a way to run linmugen on your PS3 so Ive heard.

Link- http://ironmugen.free.fr/1Mugen/mugen-2002-04-14.tar.tar

DosMugen- the outdate original version of mugen. It may not run on windows XP

Link- http://ironmugen.free.fr/1Mugen/mug10414.zip
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

C. How to install a screen pack

For this guide we will be using DJ-Vans EVE screen pack. I use the category select style so thats what will be explaining. But its the same concept for both styles.  So heres the download link lets get started.

EVE- http://www.mugen-infantry.net/index.php?ind=downloads&op=entry_view&iden=5

Now that you have mugen and eve lets put them together.

When you D/L it you will get a folder that says EVE battle. Go into the folder and you will see three different folders Data, Plugins, and Font. We will start with the font folder. Go into to font folder and copy everything in there. Now got to your mugen folder and the font folder in their. Paste everything. Now do the same for the plugins folder. Now just take the whole data folder and move it into your mugen folder as to overwrite the old one.

Now make start mugen and make sure it comes up. Your screen will turn black the you will see a screen that says loading( Note this loading time changes Depending on how many characters you have)  next we talk about putting characters in.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

II.  How to Install Characters

A. Where to get characters from

Now that you have a working mugen you need characters to enjoy some good fights. I am going to provide you with a link to the database here at mugen-infantry and the database at randomselect. Why not just give us a link to the characters you say, because I don't know what fighting games you like, so you just get the characters you want.

Link to the database- http://www.mugen-infantry.net/index.php?ind=database

Link to Randomselect- http://randomselect.piiym.net/

Hold wait you're having trouble open some characters. They have a strange file type you've never heard of well there's a link for that to except I am not going to explain this to you read it yourself.

Link- http://www.mugen-infantry.net/forum/index.php?topic=45825.0

Now that you have characters lets look at the characters folder

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B. Exploring the Character folder

Now that you have put the character you D/L in the characters folder were about ready to start adding. First go to the characters folder and make sure there re no spaces in the name like:

Sakura Kusanago = WRONG

SakuraKusanago= RIGHT

Now enter the folder

You see a bunch of different little files right, well here where you learn what a DEF file is get used to that term. Look for a file with the characters name and the words DEF file under it. Now make sure the DEF file has the same exact words as the folder for example:

Folder name- SakuraKusanago
                                                    = WRONG
DEF file name- Sakura

Folder name- SakuraKusanago
                                                    = RIGHT
DEF file name-SakuraKusanago

Wow that that all matches lets add the character
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

C. Exploring the data folder

This is where a lot of stuff that runs the mugen is. Now the Select.def is where you add the characters and stages. The System.def is where you can change the music of the title screen and other stuff that creators use.
The fight.def is the lifebars and where you can change the number of rounds you want to fight.  And the mugen.cfg is where you can change the screen size and where you can mess with the sound settings. But where in there to install characters so open the select.def and lets get started

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

D. Typing the characters in

Ok remember the name of the character right well heres where we add them scroll down to the section where the character goes since DJ-Van has provided you with a nice little outline you can use that.

Now that you're at the section where you want to put the characters you see this:

CharaName[001]

Correct, now delete the words CharaName only not the numbers.

So this should be left

[001]

Ok now where the word was, is where you add the characters name like so:

SakuraKusanago, random[001]

You say now hold up what's with this , random
That's where you tell mugen weather or not to give the character its own stage. If you want it on a particular stage you enter this;

SakuraKusanago, stages/Yourstagehere.def[001]

If not just add the random after the comma.
Now check and see if you're character is in there if not make sure all you names match up and you typed it right here is what one of my sections look for you to reference if I lost you:

;===Section06========================================

NOTE: The dashes are illegal characters that I have in that section

Don't forget to save after you put the characters in especially if you added a lot.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

III. Installing Stages

A. Making sure the Stage is set up correctly

Now that you have characters you ready to add stages to your mugen. This is a fairly easy task. Let's start with getting the stage you can use the database or you could use this link:

Link- http://www.mugen-infantry.net/index.php?ind=downloads&op=section_view&idev=2

Once you get the stage put it in the stages folder. Now it comes with two files a def file and a sff file. They generally match when you D/L them. You don't have to worry about them matching this time but you do have to make sure there are no spaces in the words. Like so

SF3 Ryu stage = WRONG

SF3Ryustage = RIGHT

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT CHANGE THE NAME OF THE SFF FILE

Now thats all done lets put the stage in.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B.Typing the stage in the select.def

Now go back to the select.def and scroll down to the bottom there is a section that says extra stages its blank area usually. When you get down there you add the following line:

stages/YourStageHere.def

Now thats simple isn't it Save and close the select def and make sure it's in there if not check your work.

Heres what mine looks like for you to use as a reference:

;-----------------------
[ExtraStages]
;Put extra stages here. They will be available in VS and Watch modes.
;For example, you can insert "stages/mybg.def".

stages/kfm.def
stages/stage0.def
stages/Twlightryu.def
stages/ryustage.def
stages/web.def
stages/lacancha.def
stages/apoc.def
stages/gillbg.def
stages/shinmb.def
stages/goukiwrath.def
stages/moon.def
stages/bckalley.def
stages/brainstar.def
stages/bugle.def

stages/Onslaught.def
stages/pacman.def
stages/reapersig.def
stages/Sigma.def
stages/skybatl.def
stages/spaceport.def
stages/subcon.def
stages/themyscira.def

stages/T_M.def
stages/acidrain.def
stages/tankbrigade.def

DON'T FORGET TO SAVE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IV. Extra Stuff

A.Putting Music on your Stages

Now I've gotten a lot of pms asking me how to put music on stages so I figured i'd explain that as well. Well first make sure you have the right format of music, mugen supports Midi, Mp3, OGG , MOD make sure the music you want is that file type. Now then take the song you want and put it in the sound folder. Now as you know make sure there are no spaces in the words. now that you have the music you want ready go to the stages def file that you want to put it in. scroll down and look for a music section its different in some stages. But you usually see this:

bgmusic =
bgvolume =

Once you find that get ready to add your music to it. Add the following line:

bgmusic = sound/yourmusichere.mp3 ---- or what ever music type you have

bgvolume = 255

Now then go see if the music plays on the stage.

Again heres an example of what mine looks like:

[Music]
;Put a filename for a MOD, MP3 or MIDI here, or just leave it
;blank if you don't want music. If an invalid filename is
;given, then no music will play. To play CD audio, put
;the track number followed by ".da". Using a track number of
;0 will play a random audio track. For example, to play
;track 3 from a music CD, use:
 ;  bgmusic = 3.da
bgmusic =sound/opendoors.mp3

;Adjust the volume. 0 is normal, negative for softer, and
;positive for louder (only for mp3, mods and CDA)
bgvolume = 255

DON'T FORGET TO SAVE AFTER YOU GET DONE
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I lost you some where fell free to pm me and tell me where

And If you feel I am missing something or you want to add something PM it to me with details and steps and I will add it with your name next to it. You will get your credit.
