The rules are simple:

     1. Only characters of the given month can be nominated for the given month. You can't nominate a character that was released in May for the Character of the Month poll of September.

     2. You can only nominate a total of 4 characters per month.

     3. You cannot nominate updates to characters that have previously won Character of the Month.

     4. A single character can only win Character of the Month once. Don't even bother nominating characters that are in the Hall of Fame.

     5. Nominations last up to 15 days; Voting lasts 15 days.

     6. When a character is nominated three times, it becomes a candidate for the poll of the given month.

     7. List the number of nominations a character has when you post your nomination. This means read the thread before you post your nominations. Example: Dhalsim by RajaaBoy - 2

     8. Don't nominate a character that has already been selected as a candidate. Again, this means you should actually read the thread.

     9. There is a maximum of 20 candidates for any given month.

     10. Everyone will be given 2 votes and the results won't be revealed until the poll expires.

Here are some simple guidelines to follow when nominating characters for The Character of the Month Poll. These guidelines make things flow smoothly, so please keep them in mind.

Nominating

     1. Only nominate characters who you want to see as character of the month. Remember, you can only nominate 4 characters, so you can't just nominate a bunch of characters just because you can nominate them.

     2. Anybody can nominate any character. Don't bash somebody because they nominate their own character or because the character they nominated is "crappy."

     3. Be specific about the character you nominate. Don't post: "All of Jmorphman's characters."

     4. Feel free to discuss in the character of the month threads about who you voted for or who you think will win, etc.

If this would be just like in MI, you can nominate even 500 chars if you want :P but only the most voted will be part of the nominees (20 max) :P

Usually, both character would get the victory. Do you suggest some sort of tie breaker or something?

How many characters can I nominate?
As said, you can nominate as much as you want, but there can only be 20 candidates.

GG Rajaa.

Are you gonna stop doing MI's? Lulz.
An average of about 28 people vote on Mugen Infantry because half of the users don't know anything except random insanity. Unfortunately, I'm still giving M.I. a chance to redeem itself (unlike many others). So, I am still going to do it there for the time being.

Nah, its not like its important, if someone released a char in such date they can just update them and be a valid option on next months.

What kind of tie breaker?

We don't really need a tie breaker but if you wish for it the best solution is to make another poll that lasts for a short span of time, letting people break the tie... or just flip a coin IRL and decide by yourself :P BUT MAKE SURE YOU RECORD YOURSELF BECAUSE WE WANNA KNOW IF YOU CHEATED OR NOT.

people should be restricted to a certain number of nominations, otherwise they pretty much nominate everything, it's quite weird to see up to 8 nominations on a single post, and the user may post again nominating even more  --;

What about a template about how to post here? Because to be honest it's quite easier if we use numbers instead of words to indicate how many nominations a character has, something like:

Goku Z2 by Alexlexus - 1

that would be fine by me, and it's quite easy to keep track of the number instead of having to read the beggining of every nomination carefully.
I fucking posting a link to the guidelines and even posted a fucking example of how to post in the thread. Fucking people don't read shit. Likes it's hard to read the post before yours. And restricting nominations is a good idea; it will take effect next month.

READ THE FUCKING THREAD PEOPLE.

I suggest including the "must use numbers" rule so people take it as a rule instead of just an example.

also I suggest telling people to mark in red when they are nominating a char that gets 3 votes to make it even easier to identify if the char got the required nominations or not.

Example of normal nomination:

Totally accurate "KOF: KYO" Shingo by ahuron - 1

Example of character who reaches 3 nominations:

Female Piccolo by Mahboy - 3

Where  :???:
Goku Z2 by Alexlexus - 1
:wink3:

That's not fair, it was an example, not an actual nomination  :P

I just want people to list the numbers. I switched those guidelines to the rules like you suggested. People still aren't going to follow them, though. Unless I start disregarding posts that don't follow the rules.

And I'm still going to have to make sure every nomination is counted for by reading every post. Doesn't take long.

Well, it's the choice of those who nominated his characters.
IMO only Gill was a real valid candidate, since the update to 1.0 really took advantage of the palremap function. All other chars don't really have much new in them. Whatever ...

I just trust what people nominate. I don't know every character that's nominated, but I recognize seeing a recent update or release topic about them and everything goes underway. I'll be careful next month.

This isn't really a big deal and doesn't deserve that much fire.

Rajaa, I would add a simple rule to nominate characters:

"Each post must have Character Name AND author, to avoid confusion, and helps to make more easier the vote count for a potentially candidate".

Not a good idea. The idea is to vote the the best character of the month, so you need to have some sort of nomination process first to keep only the worthy characters.
Like in the Olympic Games : there aren't 1000 people representing each country in each competition, or it would be madness : you have to select the very best first, and then make them compete.

I'd tend to say "why not".
Some chars that finished 2nd are better than some others who finished 1st at other months, so it makes sense in this way.
On the other side, if a char finished 2nd on one month, then it means the char that finished 1st will probably get more votes in CotY than the one that finished 2nd, considering only this particular month.

But yeah, just to give their chance to some very good chars, and since it doesn't involved more work, why not.

So is Coty still going with just the 12 monthly winners?
-
Cause I think it would be better to go with the top 2-4. In some cases, cotm comes down to a handful of votes difference(sometimes even resulting in ties). This way, you get a better overall representation of the year imo.
-
If that overly saturates the vote, then split the vote into 2(or more. Id even go for a 48 character bracket style voting system ala sports play-offs) and narrow it down that way.
-
You may lose the cotm battle, but you still get a shot at the coty war. I dont think you should take more than 4 though. The problem would then be, what if there is a multi tie for xth place lol. Only the winner gets a special portrait or whatever.

I don't know where else to post this so I thought I'd put it here since it is a suggestion.

I've noticed in a lot of months there seems to be the same author chosen for multiple nominations in the same month, I don't think it's anyone's intention
to monopolize on cotm at all, but I think a cap on how many times an author can be nominated each month should be applied.

It kinda kills the "weight" of Cotm at times, it feels less like something you can earn and more like something you can get with enough releases in the same month. I think it would help the prestige of winning it. I think like one nom per author would be Ideal, but at the least 2.

Basically with a cap of 2 it would be the first two to hit 4 votes in nomination.

Z2 is like 1 or 2 per YEAR max, LOL. It's just a coincidence we got 2 in the same month, because EVO.

On the other hand, look at the other side : by having 2 or more nominees in the same months, you reduce your chances of winning CotM. Some people vote inconditionally because "Hey author XXX" or "Oh, ZZZ-style it's my favourite". We you start having 3 chars the same month, people won't know who to vote for, and your votes will be divided among all characters, while all these votes could have gone to only 1 character if you had only one nominated character.

Meh, who cares, it's just for fun.

Someone with 4 plus characters would likely be benefitted from having their entries reduced. More votes towards one of them.  But the real question is if that would also be fairer for the others with one release per month, since there would be less "repeats" from the same person and thus less potential votes towards a non winning thing..
Neocide has an interesting proposal that I think merits discussing.

This had nothing to do with z2 I don't even know why you'd mention that.

I've seen a few months where the same author is nominated for 3-4 characters which play style and gameplay were not very different from the other. To me things like this make COTM look not as deserving a reward as it should be. It shows just throwing more quantity then quality is a good thing, which it isn't and shouldn't be.

from the last competition i can see that race has four chars in, he got collectively 60 votes, rajaa got 30 and won with his one character.

Maybe it would be a fairer competition if there were less voting options for the same person, considering the votes would be more spread out, im not sure. Maybe he would have won instead considering someone that might have voted for his char R1 wouldnt have voted in char r2 r3 or r4 instead.

But how many times did the person who released 3-4 chars in the same month and got nominated actually won in the end ? If in the end, he gets 19 nominated chars and none of them wins, it means that quantity is not a very big factor.

People will usually vote for who they think is the best, and that's it (at least I believe so). It's like forbidding Americans to have 5 athletes in the finals of whatever athletism Olympic games, because they'd have more chances of winning. Well, good for them if they arrived in the finals to begin with. And it does'nt make the competition any less rewarding if one of them wins.

i think it's completely a nonissue because i really don't think cotm is a big deal. i suppose creators like race could have an option to eliminate nominations and narrow them down to one if they want to. the action should be on their end, not by cotm mods messaging multinomination creators because that would be a huge chore

Yeah, that may have been true in a case but my honest opinion, I thought that would give you an advantage. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just saying. And I had no idea people were thinking it was unfair at all because no one said anything up until now publicly and the rules had nothing against it.

If you go back and look, I myself gave Rajaa a nomination vote for his Urien because I felt like he deserved it because he really did a good job on him. As he always does with everything he makes. I try to make sure others get the votes that they deserve.

I can see what you mean by that. But hey, if you guys decide to do a cap, then I'm cool either way. I was just saying I didn't think it was unfair at the time because I thought it would motivate people to make more stuff to increase their odds as well

it might also reduce the odds, for others tho.
Lets say i like race, so i vote only on his characters, less of a vote that could go elsewhere.

THEN AGAIN it might not really matter considering everyone only has two votes and they would still vote both on race chars.

Yea I understand completely and I agree with what both of you are saying, I was merely saying of what I thought at the time.

It does need to be fair though. Because I think there are quite a few people who think its not and I want that to change so that they too will have a chance at winning,

Also, what about the idea of someone being not being able to win right after they just won the previous month? I think that would also allow for others a chance to win too

The reason why I say this is because, If someone has fans and the fans vote for their stuff and the  creator just won the previous month because of it, then those same fans might do the same thing and the creator would win the next month and so on, and so on.

This indeed has happened before, and I think if there was a certain time span on when the next time you could win, would allow others a chance to win as well.

Your right, but it has happened before. I'm not saying its negative but say if someone one wins it 2 months down the line or 3, I mean it still could happen just like I said, But in case it did, I think it would be a good idea. Now on how much time that should a person have to wait, for the next time they could be nominated to win I don't know, but its only an idea. i think from this the most feasible thing to do is to have the author employ some level headedness and ask to have some of his things removed so that only his latest stuff is up for competition.

if more people think its worth it we could reduce nominations to 2 a month, but i dunno, titiln did point out how that adds a lot of work for the cotm mods.

honestly, it's not a huge deal, I just thought it'd give more weight to COTM in general, it had nothing to do with anyone winning more than once because of it.
It just saturates the competition when some people are just competing with themselves to win.

As far as keeping track, my suggestion would be just like when people update the nominations, you just put a author who has been chosen more than once in red.  I'm sure there isn't going to be too many authors who release more than 1-2 characters a month and become nominated so I don't think it would be a huge thing to cover.

I'm agree with everything but IDK if this isn't a reward as it should be. I mean, it's an online prize, just a gif, it's not like money or something material. I don't see why change something that works. And especially considering that the current system already has rules that confuse users. I don't know why, it's quite simple, but ShinZankuro always puts a - 3 in his nominations, and Yagoshi300 usually makes a  - 4 on his posts :/

I mean, it's nice to win a COTM, yeah, and it would be great if the contest always be won by the person who deserves it, but right now it's something like a popularity contest, and apply more changes to the system is going to enhance this condition. I think if Rasetsumaru had not participated in the previous COTM, Haohmaru would have won. And even R@CE thinks that Urien deserved to win.

Just my opinion.

If SotQ was not directly associated with the forum that'd be fine and dandy, but the moment you make such a pathetic contest a forum sanctioned activity with the special membergroups and stars and stuff, it makes the whole board look pathetic.

Also,

Bimestral, quarterly and semestral awards wouldn't work either. The problem with SOTM is that it failed to make the general public feel any hype, the only people nominating things are contestants themselves; longer voting periods would only make the actual contest more forgetable to the average user.

I still think we should keep them, even if it's just the people who make stages who are voting and nominating. But I don't feel as strongly as I did about it a year ago because, yeah, it's not gaining any traction and is in fact losing a lot.

Similarly, CotM looks like it's been losing steam lately, there just don't seem to be as many votes or nominations. I guess that's sorta normal maybe (because everything normally loses viewers over time) but it's still discouraging!

I am not sure if I may suggest that is it better to ban characters who keeps on crashing Mugen for the COTM nomination, such as Ikaruga's characters as his creations keep on crashing Mugen until if he solves his characters' problem then his characters are allowed to be nominated? I feel that it would be silly if the character who has got problem in Mugen gets to win the COTM.
