.sff files are the sprite files for a character, containing all the character's sprites and effects.
Use Fighter Factory to open up kfm's .sff file to see their structure.
It's recommended that you use it as a base and replace his sprites with your own desired sprites.
It's completely possible to create a new .sff from scratch using FF, but using a base can make things easier.

the .SFF also save not only the character's sprite as well but also its save the images sprite that you create by using fighter Factory 3.1 aka FF3 or Mugen Character Maker aka MCM and also this work for stages and Intros, game overs, ending  and system for the screen packs.  The SFF is needed for any mugen type content component  to function also SFF stand for Sprite File Format for mugen short terms SFF. you take the sprite that you create and you apply them to Mugen Character Maker or Fighters Factory. When you SAVE your working in progress the Both software that you created the SFF will be created for you. This way you can apply on your characters, stages and etc

most every use the mugen 1.0 and 1.1 so Fighter Factory 3.1 come in handy to create the SFF
