Concept
What if everyone had different meters? The reason I thought this up was because I wanted a fighting game where the characters actually stood out from each other and had unique mechanics aside from the standard system stuff. If characters had their own meter and ways of building it, that would make matchups more interesting.
Simple Controls, Deep MechanicsBeen playing a lot of Battle for the Grid and Blade Strangers. Whilst I appreciate what those games are trying to do, I don't think either games really pull off the "Simple Controls" thing right, and it comes at the sacrifice of some of the game mechanics. I think it's still possible to have accessable inputs whilst keeping interesting mechanics.
StoryNot sure what to do for this. I have two ideas - one that involves supernatural beings called "Astrals" and the other involving robots. The basic premise of both ideas is that humans can be "bonded" to these partners in a special way, and the study/development of them is conducted by a large conglomerate/company. One day, the CEO of the company vanishes, leaving behind a cryptic clue that promises great rewards to whoever manages to decipher it. Thus a race begins between the playable characters to solve the mystery.
Controls/Systems- 3-Buttons: Light, Medium, Heavy. Autocombos on some buttons.
- 4th Special Move button.
- Combo system similar to KOF/SFxTK. Focus on grounded juggles.
- No complicated motions. Inputs are done Blade Strangers/Smash Bros. style
- Throws on Light.
- Universal defensive meter akin to the Stand meter from that one Jojo game. It's spent on certain techniques and goes down if the partner is damaged. If emptied by enemy attack, the player is briefly stunned.
Character Concepts- "Aggressive" Shoto. Female, has a dragon-themed partner. Standard meter.
- Scientist-type that needs to "charge" up special moves. Inspired by Cenozoic Blue Ranger from BftG. Builds "static" by landing charged moves.
- Zipline-using character with a spider partner. Drains meter from enemies.
- "Coward Grappler" that needs his partner to do all the legwork for him. Inspired by Incineroar and SeanAltly's After-Image. Uses a "hype" meter that builds with aggressive moves.
- "Swarm" zoner character that commands several partners, inspired by Pom from Them's Fightin' Herds.
- Rushdown character with a run. Maybe a ninja?
- Soldier-type that uses an ammo system and a Gears of War-styled reloading mechanic.
- Poison-inflicting monster character.
- EX version of main character. More aggressive, uses rekkas akin to Kyo.
- Standard dark, broody character. Uses headswap of main character's partner.
NotesThis is never going to happen. Mostly because I have a job and little time to devote to it, but also because it requires original sprites and I'm shit at spriting. Also, I can't decide if I want this to be robots or an urban fantasy like Astral Chain. There was also a nother version of this concept that had the characters themed on video games, and the special move button was a trait button because I can't seem to let go of that concept, ever. But the characters still would have had different meter styles, so that was consistent at least.
