My friend sold a CVS2 MUGEN game with works from Warusaki3, Rei, Gal124 and H' for 30 bucks. It wasn't an internet deal, just to some dude who really wanted any version of CVS. Fan made, MUGEN or not.

ACTUALLY . . . what can legally stop me for selling mugen to other people? I'll put it this way:First of all, i had to buy a computer ($). I spent a lot of time (invaluable) surfing the internet ($) in search for mugen stuff. I even sometimes had to enter some japanese sites where the stuff is even harder to find (more time and $). Then i spend some more time by charging each one of those characters into the m.u.g.e.n. engine by typing around 30 digits per char. Same time for the stages. Then, i had to buy myself a cd/dvd burner (in case i don't have one), buy a cd or dvd and put all those bytes into it. Of course i also had to pay the electricity bill for using the computer. After all that, i sell a guy MY WORK (basically time and effort) . . . not the free characters floating in the internet. Now tell me you can (in the hypothetic case i would want to sell mugen) legally stop me.
You would have to sell the engine too which is owned by elecbyte. That's where the problem would come in. If they where to open up the source code and you made everything yourself including sprites then you could do it.
No matter how many excuses you find (I hope you're joking with that one), you'll always be making money out of not only a copyrighted engine like Shamrock said, but of characters and stuff copyrighted to the companies that make the fighting games. That's a crime, and although said companies won't prosecute everyone who does it odds are they would do so to someone who does it a lot.
Selling other persons work is morally wrong. So is profitting from others effort. And no, its not morally correct to profit from types of effort that anyone can have. With that mentality you could scour off deviantart, make cds out of all the art there ( i had a lot of effort putting them into folders! and finding them! TIME AND MONEY!) and then sell them to random people. Its still bullshitty, illegal, and immoral.Hey I spent a lot of time in jap art sites, got a lot of artwork from there! I should get money from that!No one forced you to use others work, dont act as if its something you need to get paid for doing.
To try to take rules and bend them so they say what they wish they said so they arent guilty of anything is a christian hobbie, not a legal one.Im afraid that stealing is still stealing no matter how colorful you paint it.
All that's true ... But i was thinking in a situation like this (RL):Guy: Hey c00pMe: SupGuy: You've heard of that game called mugen?Me: Well, it's not a GAME, but an engine. And yes, i've heard about it.Guy: I supposed it, you're into fighting games and that stuff, right?Me: Yeah, sorta.Guy: It's true that you can download characters and put them inside it?Me: Yes.Guy: . Listen, could you do me a favor? I want a game with characters from kof and last blade, my two favorite games ever. Can you mix them into that "moogen".Me: . . . You can download the chars by yourself, and add them by yourself also. Not a scientific thing.Guy: Yeah, i imagine that, but i'm lazy and i would have to learn how to do it. I just want to play.Me: To play, you have to pay.Guy: Haha, ok. How much?Me: Gimme 20 bucks and a list of the characters you want, and in a day you'll have it.Guy: Ok, dealMe: (haha, sucker)(See, i'm selling a SERVICE in that case)
QuoteMe: Well, it's not a GAME, but an engine. THE README said:III. Running the GameTHE README said:MUGEN is a 2D fighting game engineIT'S BOTHif you charge a "friend" extra for putting a handful of files in a cd you're basically an asshole and you're still making money off of other people's work which also makes you an asshole hope this helps
No, it says - MUGEN is a "2d Fighting Game" Engine -; just that is not "ed. There's not another way of describing "street fighter style games"- In the example, the guy is not a friend- If this was real, i'd probably give the guy a fast tutorial on how/where download the chars he want, and how to add them- In any case you'll be making money of others people work, that can't be helped- My intention was to avoid the usage of the word "steal" (which is always used in these cases), and it looks like i made it. See, you didn't mention it or any other variant.
