SFF's weren't so bad. Nor were SND files. Air files however were MISERY. There was nothing good about creating an air file.

Code was code, you copy pasted more than now but that's about all that was hard there.

Totally agree. Elecbyte's AirEdit was probably the least user-friendly tool ever made and you could consider yourself lucky if it ever ran on your computer and didn't corrupt your air file.
Here's an AirEdit tutorial for those Mugen archaeologists:
http://strider.mjjprod.free.fr/mugen/tutorial/page7_e.htm

There was also MuGenerator, the first user-friendly AIR editor that had the "feature" of destroying your files.
After some time, tools like MCM, MEE or ZCharCAD allowed the edition of AIR files, but these tools usually had one good feature and two bad ones. So it was rather common to use one tool for editing the SFF, another tool for making the SND and another one for the AIR. Code was all made in Notepad.

I tried mugenerator ONCE. I loaded up an early Broli by necromancer. I changed the size of a clsn1. Nothing else, just a clsn1. Saved. Somehow this turned into Broli + a helper of broli at half scale bound up and left, and ANOTHER helper from there, up and left, i still don't know how the tool did that.

MCM's air editing was ick too as no clsndefaults. MEE's clsn editing was acceptable but not great as you had to save every frame you did.

This may sound weird but, am I the only person that still uses Notepad for all coding?

No.
I do use FF now for the SFF and AIR and SND, because the DOS tools don't work anymore, but if I'm only tweaking the code, I go with Notepad++. Before that I loved the DOS tools for the SFF, and I used MCM to check what I was doing on the AIR.

I tried Mugenerator once, on a Rugal, I didn't even change anything, I opened it, looked around, didn't understand anything, saved and closed, and the character was fucked. I didn't understand, I thought the character was just made that way.
If I struggled to the end of my determination, to the end of my way of life with my followers, if the result is ruin, then this ruin is inevitable. Grieve. Shed tears. But you cannot regret.

Nope, same as Byakko for me. FF update 3 or FF3 for SFF, SND and AIR.
Notepad++ all the way for all the coding.
I just launch FF3 on the coding to check for syntax errors when the char is done.

Thanks to the fact that FF3 has a very customisable sctrls list i use it for coding. Need a leaping attack? I double click the one i have pre-coded and tack some numbers in, KoF velocity slow down? Double click, change some numbers. 90% of the sctrls are set up with their most common features for their most common uses. At the same time, all the additional parameters are listed in order of how likely i am to need them. If i don't need them i can just delete from a point down. I have a simple [statedef ] etc etc set up for when i need a new state.

If i need to edit something quick though or simply check a bit of code, basic notepad is loaded up cos i don't need to see the rest.

The best of the lot before FF came out was MEE. MCM 1.5 and lower was good at SFF files. I used MCM 2.0 for SND because TheRancid's SNDsGood stopped working altogether for me.

I remember AirEdit sometimes went further into destroying your work: it deleted your .air files :(
