[Theme Thread] DBFC/UNIB Sprite Thread

Hey guys!
So I've been studying the style that French Bread uses for their DBFC and UNIB sprites and I finally got the hang of it.
It's actually MUCH easier for me to sprite in that style instead of CPS2,CVS,CPS3 etc. actually, due to the simple but effective lightsource and shading techniques.
So, that gave me an idea, since Ghost Killer and I have a bunch of WIP French Bread style sprites in progress, why not start a theme thread for that style? I really wanna see what you guys can come up with. It's basically modern Anime shading, but pixelated :)

I'll sumbit the first sprite:

Issei from High School DxD with a modified BOOSTEH GEAH! by me (season 3 just started btw w00t)

Just to give you some examples of how the shading and style works look at this:

As you can see here it can reveal a couple of things about the style:

1: The lightsource comes from above in most sprites and sometimes in front in some sprites.

2: Big eyes with that look fierce with Anime-Waifu standard pupils (very exaggerated) for young Shounen/Shoujo type characters like Kirito, Asuna, Taiga, etc. It's the most typical eye style that most characters have
VERY big chibi style eyes for loli's like Kirino and Tomoka's,
Really small, squinted and focused looking eyes for serious characters like Akira, Selvia, Kojou and Tatsuya.

3:There are just 4 levels of shading, BUT you only use the boldest shade on little details like buttons or creases

4:As said above you only use the Boldest shading in the little details, NOT outlining the character. As you can see, there are no bold outlines on the edges of the characters, making them kinda look flat.

5: As you can see from their heads, they all follow the same circle pattern lightsource throughout all of the characters, regardless of the hairstyle.

6:Colors are slighlty unsaturated, so use slighty pale colors that don't have much contrast when it comes to light colors like skin or pale blue.

7:The eyes and eyebrows ALWAYS go on the top layer of the face, on top of the hair and everything, no exceptions.

8:Remember to always look at typical anime artworks and media for good reference on the proportions that they use, because Frech Bread practically take the proportions of DBFC straight from their anime adaption looks.

That's all for now, I leave the rest up to you :)
Happy Spriting!

Tip: Kirito is a nice base for  young shounen archetype MC heroes, with Akira being a great base for Bulky type characters like Ryu, Goku, Etc.

Wow, man. Your edit looks beautiful. Also thanks for giving us your observations, might try to do a DBFC Captain Commando.
Hopefully, this thread won't end up like the Guilty Gear sprite thread...
Also, great to see you back, ma man! :) :)

Aw deng you just guessed my next planned sprite LOL
Guess I'll move on to another one so you can do your magic! Can't wait to see it!

and thanks bro! I'm feeling a bit better each day, now I'm good enough to continue slaving spriting in High-Res :)
i'm taking a break from the MSH:R project for a little while longer too btw, since I lost all my MUGEN related files bc of a computer format (its a long story) and i'm gonna re-do all my lost progress after the break.

The Eltnum edits' shading looks spot on in most of the areas., but her torso in the first pic is MASSIVE compared to her hands and the rest of her body and her legs are slightly too far apart. Also, she has no neck so It looks really awkward, should be easy to fix though.

Oh and in the first pic her mid-tone on her White part of the Torso is WAY too thick, the thickest French Bread puts on their midtones is 2 pixels wide. Oh and the midtone looks awkward there, taking it out all together on that spot would render it looking better.

The Yukina Edit has alot of small issues that break the deal for me, most of it is due to the inconsistent shading on her Jacket area, especially in the arms and the mid-lower area of the white shirt. I'll edit it later and point out some stuff to help you get used to the style better :)
Other than that, nice edits!

Like Kaiser's first edit, your shading is spot on, but I have one major problem. The chin. Too. Round. LOL. Just make it a tad more pointy, look at Shana or Kirino for example if you want good loli references. Also, her left leg is outlined while the right one isn't even though they're sharing the same lightsource and shading placement. It's inconsistent.

If you want to outline the leg, you should just completely shade it dark with the midtone for it to appear is if that leg is behind the non-shaded one. Remember, you ONLY outline the edges if it is darkened, otherwise there should be no outline at all. I would nitpick for the socks being outlined, but it's not that noticeable so that could be an exception :) Other than that, WOW those first time edits look great!

Impressive work so far guys, this thread is starting off strong!

I wish I could transition 3D model fighting game stance from XNA/XPS or/& remastered PS2 sprites into this style. The only problem on XNA/XPS render pic resizing while I was doing on my Sterk 2D fighting game style stance render is that getting blur after resize into French Bread/Ecole style size on PSD

Still in the works. While doing this, I decided to break some of the guidelines of the DBFC/UNIB spriting style. You'll probably see those rule breaks here and there.

Overall, what are your thoughts??

That looks really good for a start, nice work!
I agree with what Black Hatter said, it looks a bit stretched. Also, simplify that nose a bit more, it looks weird to me atleast.
It's alright to break a few rules as long as it looks nice and that it resembles the style atleast.
The shading is well done and the anti-aliasing looks fine so far.
The hair however looks like french fries to me lol it also lacks the spike in the back he has, kinda like Jin.
Nice work so far! I cant wait to fix my PC or buy a new one so I can show you guys what I've finished.

Should be more easy due the sprite size and number of tones besides the shading isnt really much specific except for the hair unleast iam wrong.

well, in most cases the lightsource comes from the top and there are 4/5 levels of tones in the shading. you're right about the hair though, ALL hair lightsources look like that on the French Bread characters.

The hair on the last one has to be the most detailed thing I have seen in this topic nice!! I know the style is like pretty simplistic on its shading but damn, some parts due look bland, especially body parts.

Guess thats just of the style and the resolution helps with that :P

It doesn't even look too "DBFC/UNIB", rather it looks like something Mugenhunter can make. And I wish I was joking on it, but the shading and color is reminding me of it.

I think you might need to look at some sprites on how a DBFC/UNIB style worked. It might help you a lot.

From what ive been seeing all you doing and dumb downing Arch System shading. Even though you are using four shades of the color, for the out line closet to the light you wouldnt use the second darkest color to outline it to bring it out more. It almost looks as if a person was trying to take out the color background of the sprite and by accident they left the anti-a filter on thus making the outlines like that.

The sprites look good, dont get me wrong. Just something doesnt really fit it. But hey, not everyone going to like a style. I learned that the hard way...(no not really)

I'm not too keen on his gi, since it looks a bit too bright on the orange. Same for the face, since it looks... Off.

Honestly, the Goku sprite almost looks like one of those badly filtered sprites that tried to pass off as "hi-res".

Edit: So damn late, but I just took a look at the picname and it saids "Goku_WIP". Silly me. Does needs some improvements, but not bad.. so far.

i knew the face had the eyes too wide apart!

aside from that, i'll change the gi color for sure, i think i went too far in the folds department, ill take a look at akira's sprites for reference, since when i made that goku i had no references at all since i had no internet. thanks for the critique!

This looks pretty nice. The colors for the outfit is too bright like Zem said. Also, the skin tones blend into each other too much, you should just take the skin tone colors straight from Akira or Hyde or someone. The face looks mostly fine to me, the eyes should be a bit bigger though. Also, his (viewer's) right wristband looks too 'square'. Maybe give a bit more shape to it. But overall, the sprite still looks nice. I'm excited to see you add the finishing modifications to it. :)

I might post something I've been working on here soon.

The way you're shading fabric doesn't quite fit the style, you're just recycling the shading of whatever you're tracing, actually that goes for pretty much the entire sprite, and you're keeping whatever you traced's original proportions instead of actually adjusting them to the style, Scathatch's height is so off since you just traced over the FGO sprite.
Your color management is off as well, Satsuki's hair is lacking tones and your palettes seem a bit off.

With the lightsource, I thought that (at least with the Melty Blood artwork) that it was similar to the sprite style, thus why I kept most of it. I did somewhat modify it for most of the sprites. There were a few instances where I foolishly forgot to change it in some areas for all of them though. I'll try to avoid leaving the lighting the same as the artwork from now on.

With the proportions, looking at her FGO sprite, her head seemed like the only thing that really needed resizing. I was going to resize it but I forgot until most of the sprite was colored in and decided it was too much trouble after. Looks like I didn't scale down her height before tracing enough either.

I don't think Satsuki's hair is lacking tones? I used 4 (had 1 left in the palette but didn't end up needing it), the fifth isn't used that much from what I've studied. I agree with the palette issue, I really wasn't happy with how they came out for most of the sprites. That's something I also need to work more on.

Thank you so, so much for the great feedback, S.D.! I really appreciate it as I truely love this sprite style and want to improve as much as I can. :)

Four is the amount of colors in average you should be using for the hair in this style, yes, then the issue is your contrast and color management because Satsuki's hair at first glance only looks like it has two tones, light and dark, just take the palette from existing sprites to have the proper contrast, you can take Nanase's for instance. Also, the distribution of your tones isn't very even, this happens because you're just tracing and copying the existing style instead of replicating the way the shading is distributed on her hair. Or face, Shiki's face for instance.

FGO sprites have weird proportions, Scathatch should have about the same proportions as Selvaria so you should use that as a reference, the FGO sprite compared to this sprite's style makes her look like a dwarf or a kid.

Look at Aoi_ship and what he does to replicate the style

Like I said, I need to work on making the colors. I'd usually take them from the artwork I was basing the sprite on if I couldn't get them from a source sprite of the character. Taking the colors directly from another character will work, though I usually prefer not to to keep the palette 'unique'. I still need to improve with light and tone distribution as well.

Hmmm, I didn't really expect Scathach to be proportionally similar to Selvaria. I'll keep that in mind for later on then, since I plan to make more sprites of her at some point. I'll keep in mind how inaccurate the proportions are with the FGO sprites too.

I'll check out Aoi_ship's stuff. Thanks again, S.D., I appreciate it. :)

Shit, I forgot to respond here. I fixed up the shadowing under his nose and a few other things, but I left the face as I feel it looks fine as is. I'll post the new version soon. I decided to stick with the right design too.

And here's this:

Also, @walruslui: discovered and told me about small differences between the DBFC and UNIB sprites. The former's sprites are scaled taller and the lightsource is different. Luis, if you reiterate what you said on this, that'd be great.

All these sprites are truly sublime, I wish I could create something of such quality.
As of now, I've only made 3 sprites : the first one being horrible, the second one being an edit of Linne, so I'll post the third one which is...
a sprite of sans.

Took part of the posture from Linne and Vatista's hand, and tried to redesign the whole thing to remake sans' clothings, head,...
Eventually, laziness took over me and thus, there are shadows missing and weird palette choices.
I acknowledge I truly need improvement, so I'm open to any source of tutorial or theory one may suggest.
Also, I use GIMP.

I'm aware that you're prob new to the style (and maybe spriting too), but boy, where to begin:

-That is a very tall Sans. Shouldn't he be... idk, shorter?
-Looks like you just gave him a beer belly rather than how "fat" he usually looks in-source.
-Even though he's a skeleton, he somehow has manboobs. Maybe it's cause of how the chest part of his jacket is shaded, but still.
-Shoes are noticeably less detailed.
-Eyes made him look like a sad drunken skeleton.
-His teeth are not even in the right color.
-His hand is noticeably a bit small for him, even tho he's a skeleton.

If anything, I would suggest someone like Izaya to be a good use of reference for Sans.

I see that you got the pose (and jacket, tho you need to improve a lot on that) from him, but even then, he's a good ref for someone like Sans.
Re: [Theme Thread] DBFC/UNIB Sprite Thread
#83  November 21, 2016, 08:09:24 pm
"you're prob new to the style (and maybe spriting too)"  : Spriting at all ^^"
"-That is a very tall Sans. Shouldn't he be... idk, shorter?"  : May you believe it or not, I took Linne's intro pose as a reference, and Linne is already quite short. I thought it was sufficient, buuuuuuut maybe Tomoka's size would have fitted better.
"-Looks like you just gave him a beer belly rather than how "fat" he usually looks in-source.
-Even though he's a skeleton, he somehow has manboobs. Maybe it's cause of how the chest part of his jacket is shaded, but still."
: I guess I'm just not good at making folds in clothes at all, but like in a critical state. XD Well the jacket sounded wide as it is, like a padded jacket but I didn't even manage to set that one up indeed :p
"-Shoes are noticeably less detailed." : Yep, laziness took the shades away.
"-Eyes made him look like a sad drunken skeleton."  : Should I have made them like 3x3 or 4x4 (rounded) squares ? Because that's the way he sounded in game,
"-His teeth are not even in the right color."  : Yeah, I should have made them clearer. But then again, laziness... That really wasn't a joke, I really felt lazy at some point considering I took 6 hours to pull this out whereas I wish I was faster, even if quality should matter first or we end up like Requiem Final... Though I'm not that far away from it after all.
"-His hand is noticeably a bit small for him, even tho he's a skeleton."  : I won't deny it, I feel the same. Maybe because the hand was horizontally flat, but even then, with the big bones I've drawn for sans, it feels out of place.

Now surprisingly enough, I didn't take Izaya as a model for him. The lifted left arm was a late commitment as I was already doing the rest. I preferred taking Linne because of the size and thus the vertical proportions that were easier to respect.
Yep, guess I have a huge ton to learn then x) Thanks for the advice :)

Well you are not exactly too wrong with the tones per color number (3 out of 5), but the body proportions and shading doesn´t fit all the style of the Topic IMO.
Also may want to darker that shading and outline since is barely notable.

Looks more like one of those TOON sprites instead of the anime kinda style.

no. i'm not going into the specifics on why it doesn't look good, i'll say this in a way you'll understand.

Try to study how the character designs look first before doing anything. Right now it's very apparent you do not know what you are doing in terms of this specific style.

Try to practice art in general before tackling something like this.

That´s actually a really good sprite.

If anything? He´s just too big but hey, that´s a irrelevant detail to be honest.

IMO the 2nd spike of the head "kinda" has too much shading (forgot how it´s called) but maybe more highlight but it´s too good already.
