I like CF series since the beginning, but my favorite is CF63 1/3 for far. Even I got the original game when I had N64. So, since I knew about MUGEN, always I wanted to convert at least 1 character for MUGEN. I tried for years to convert some sprites without success (well, I made Taffy and Bad Mr. Frosty sprites well, but took me a lot of time). Now, at last I get a way to convert these sprites into MUGEN and also it's an easy way to make mass production.

So, after this intro, let me show you with pride, my first CF63 1/3 project for MUGEN:

Earthworm Jim
The coolest worm in videogames now will have a best adaptation to MUGEN from this game, the first one he appears as a fighter. My mission is not just make him for MUGEN, also put in him all the features has in the game, or at least all I can do. Here's what I've planned for him:
-All his poses, Command Moves, Specials and Supers
-All his voices and sounds from CF63 1/3
-Combo system (copycat/parody of KI2 system)
-Claytalities (now capable to do thanks to Juano16's tutorials)

And now, the shots:



I'm still ripping the sprites, but now I've some of basics ready, like stance, jump, crouch and block, and some of his normal hits (and as you see in 4th pic, also I can make palettes).
And before you asked, also I'm working in CF63 1/3 lifebars, I hope to get finished them soon...

The quality of the sprites doesn't look too amazing..but I'm assuming thats just how they look in-game?

Thanks... Yeah, I noticed the lifebars are easier to rip than the characters, so this is also my first attempt in make lifebars (with PI1 ones, which I get back to work, too)

Here's a video of Earthworm Jim in action in CF63 1/3, I hope can emulate in MUGEN like he appears here ;)

A year ago, I also tried ripping the sprites of Earthworm Jim as well but couldn't get it to work right due to the lighting in the game would change EWJ's pallete every time I ripped and also I would rip it and still get some parts missing.

My question is this: What programs did you use to rip the character and how did you get it to such a clear resolution?

Just 3 programs:
-Project64, to emulate the game (the best emulator on internet, even when it suck in certain way)
-AnimGet, to get the shots when you're playing
-Paint Shop Pro or any other image edition program (I prefer PSP since it's better with pixels than Photoshop, IMO)

Basicly you've to get the screen in Project64 at 640x480 res, then take the shots with AnimGet and then edit them in PSP (or you fav editing program), crop and clean them like MAME games (deleting the background) and after that resizing at 50% (320x240 if you do it with the entire shot). After that, adjusting brightness/contrast and then making a palette with the sprite (I used less than 100 colors, like 50 + or -), and that palette you uses for the next sprites

I hope this can help to make more ClayFighter characters for MUGEN :D

So the lifebars aren't going to have the combo announcer, are they? I think it might be impossible to have the announcement systme like that in mugen. :'(

Ripping these sprites look like a very long (and boring :P) process. I'm happy somebody has the dedication to do such a work.
Good luck with the character.

And yeah, maybe you could add the announcer system to Earthworm Jim himself, as creators do with their MVC characters.

Interesting. I'll keep this mind when I rip sprites from the game later in the future.

And yeah, you may want to rip the announcer or I could rip or voice act the voices myself.

Oh man, getting those sprites sounds like a very tedious and painful process, which makes me love you all the more for actually doing this.

I am also quite interested in how you are planning to do the announcer for the lifebars, since they are quite different from the norm.  I guess you could have round 1 be LETS GET READY TO CRUMBLE with a long enough space, and perhaps round 2 could be OH I LOVE IT or something.

Well, that's the easier part. N64 CF games (63 1/3 and Sculptor's Cut) have in the option the volume for voice/FX and for music, so only I've to mute music and when appears the voice/sound, I recorded when I put pause in the game. The only pain-in-the-ass are the gethit sounds and the strong hit FX, since they are combinated when you hit a character, that's my only trouble for now...

Well, in the lifebars actually I put in first round the "let's get ready to crumbleee!" but in the middle it sounds the "fight!" and I don't know how I can make more time for the phrase, or if I can do it... so I'm thinking about just put the "fight" sound only

About the announcer in Jim's snd, I've to add it when he made certain kind of combos and stuff, since the lifebars aren't capable to do that...

Finally, a decent Earthworm Jim will come to mugen. Those sprites sure are hard to rip it out and i thought the Genesis emulator was hard.

Im liking were this is going I wanted to make a CF63 1/3 char since forever cuz none of them has has been made yet and I figured out all the insane combos and claytalitys on the game but I don't no how to do jack for mugen except play so these chars stayed on my wish list anyways liking EWJ can't wait to see kong pow hes the best clayfighter :sugoi: ;D :)

About the character itself, with his ripped sprites, I've this made in MUGEN
-Various basic moves: stand, crouch, jump, block, walk fwd, run
-Some poses: taunt, generic intro (walking to the fight)
-Hits:
   stand -> WP, SP far (worm whip)
   crouch -> WP, MP (shoot wannabe), SP1 (uppercut)
   air -> WP, MP
-Special moves: Fire Shoot (only need the proj sprites), EWP Punch (Jim uppercut) and some sprites of Worm Ball
-2 palettes, the blue one (P1) and some brown custom one (only made if it would work the palettes)

I have an idea on a palette, one which gives him a yellow suit, black skin, red gloves and a metal blue neck area.

I was thinking in a Psycrow palette too, but I've to still experimenting with actual sprites and if I can change the other colors apart of the blue staff (if that so, I'm thinking in a Boogerman palette, too)

you can just hack the textures of some stage and the lifebar, and then rip your chars withouth have to erase the stage.

This morning I was ripping the ABC from CF63 1/3, these letters made of clay and with a lot of colours. These ones I'll use for naming characters when you win. Also I got N64 Sound Ripper (thanks Dakangel) and I ripped announcer voices and all FX sounds (but doesn't work to rip character voices, sadly :'()

Thanks for the video, but that only works for Project64 1.7, the only version avaliable is 1.6 since 1.7 is just for developers and  collaborators (that's mean, it's private). So that tutorial doesn't help me, thanks anyway ;)

Nope you only need the Rice plugin, the dumps are made from the plugin not from the emulator, and that version of PJ64 could be found on google ;)

hahah this is so cool. i didnt care much for clay fighter, but i liked earthworm jim. used to have earthworm jim 1 and 2 for snes. brings back memories. good luck on this.

Well, I've ripped almost all normal hits and already implemented in MUGEN and I discovered something interesting: Interplay guys used certain sprites in a lot of moves, so I ripped less than I expected (with 115 sprites, I get almost all basics and normal hits)

Well guys, I wished to show you more shots or a video, but instead that I'll describe you how he's in CF63 1/3 and how will be for MUGEN. For those ones who already played CF games for N64, my intention is making him most accurate I can for MUGEN. For those ones who don't played this great game, here's what Jim will have:

-6 buttons (3 punches and 3 kicks), a taunt (with 3 random phrases), 2 intros and 2 wins

-All his special moves from this game:
  -Fire Shoot: Jim uses his gun and shoot a fireball of large range
  -EJW Punch: an uppercut, similar to Shoryuken and copycats
  -Tumbleworm: Jim makes a diagonal jump-roll and makes a kick when he touch the ground. And the roll can make damage, too (especially if enemy is in the air)
  -Worm Ball: Jim suit inflates as a ball and then rolls to the screen until it touch the enemy
  -Overhead Attack: command move in all CF chars, a little jump with a low hit in the knees, in this case, his own head

-All his supers from the game (all of them uses just 1 powerbar, like in CF):
  -Super Fire Shoot: 4 fireballs in a row, last one makes you fall
  -Super EWJ Punch: Hmmm, think in Ken Masters' Shoryureppa :P
  -Stairway to Heaven: A jump with an air punch, if the hit is successful, Jim will make a diagonal autocombo that elevates enemy. In CF63 1/3 doesn't make much damage for a super, but I'll fix that ;)
  -Super Propeller: Jim uses his head as a forward helicopter hitting enemy with many hits

-His 5 Claytalities from the game (as I said before, I'll use Juano16's fatalities tutorial):
  -Cow From Sky: The signature animal from EWJ series falls from sky to smash his enemy
  -Launch from Island: A strong uppercut that makes enemy go far from Klaymodo Island... and I know how to emulate this in MUGEN >:D
  -Squeeze Claytality: One of the generic claytalities, Jim uses his head to squeeze enemy
  -Squish Claytality: Another generic one, but this time Jim makes a strong punch to stomp enemy into the ground
  -Knock Off Top Half: And the last generic one, an uppercut that cut enemy in half (direct copycat of MK this one)

-All his combo system from the game (copycat of KI series), incluiding Ultras (calles Insane Combos in the game)

That's all I can tell for now, I hope for my first release at least having all specials and supers, that's my priority now... soon more pics and a video of him ;)

For my knowledge in MUGEN, specials and supers aren't a problem for me, even the combo system can't complain me (I learned a lot making the SS4's 14-hit combo for Gen-an). My great challenge will be the Claytalities for sure, my first try in this was making Eric compatible with Juano16's fatalities for his MK chars, and that took me a lot of work... I hope at least make Jim with all his specials and supers for the first release ;)

And well, some new shots and a final stuff :P

Thanks ;) for finishing the other 2 moves I need to rip more sprites, but now I'm ready to do the supers, since all the sprites I need are already ripped (especially the super versions of Fire Shoot and EWJ Punch)

I think soon I'll start with my favorite part of making characters: palettes ;D

I did not check a full that P64.
But I think the sprites looks in that way because, that don't have an option to disable anti-aliasing.

Sorry for not showing more advances of Jim, here I got something to forgive me :P

Finished his 4 supers from CF 63 1/3, there's 2 of them: Super Fire Shoot (4 FS, the last one makes you fall) and Stairway to Heaven (Jim's diag-up autocombo)

Also made almost all his normal hits (ripping close med punch, another worm-whiplash like his far strong punch), and the last move I needed:

Dashing Elbow, a.k.a. Jim's Combo Opener, now I can complete the other moves he needs (details at bottom). And I finished Tumbleworm, too, but I don't have images of that :P

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand...

Now he's compatible ;)

The normal part is now ready, now start to work in the 2 great challenges for me: the KI-esk combo system and Claytalities. And before you asked, I added announcer voice in Jim, for the intro (he has the generic one, with the char walking to the stage) and random for the supers :D

Oh, and I filmed a video of Jim in action, but I didn't prepared for upload it here in the cyber (mi conection messed me up, sorry), but soon I'll upload it. meanwhile, just get with the pics ;)

You could try playing with colors and scale for the projectiles of Super Fire Shoot : they're all the same and it looks repetitive as is.

Other than that, everything seems to be progressing smoothly. Good luck with the combo system and the claytalities.

Well, in the game it works that way as you see in the pic, same with similar supers of other CF chars (as Kung Pow's "Lo Mein" super, when he jumps and shoot woks). But I noticed other moves like Tumbleworm works even better than in the game :P

OK, this is not an advance of Jim but it's good news: I wrote Ahrimanes and Lord Sinistro to ask permission for KI combo system and talk to Shadowtak for compatibility code, respectively. I hope to get a good answer of both creators, but for now I downloaded Juano16's Fatalities tutorial and I started to apply to Jim...

Oh, and I debt you the video of Jim in action, I think this week I'll be uploading to my YouTube account ;)

OK, made combo system and fatality system on Jim, only need to test the system and start to make claytalities... and the Insane Combos (the Ultras of CF 63 1/3), of course ;)

Also, Jim is now 100% compatible with Shadowtak characters, incluided claytalities (like Blue Suede Goo's "Haircut" claytality).

So now at last I got internet in my room, I can post regularily new shots and videos of Jim's advances. Tonight the first video I debt you months ago and some shots of Shadowtak's compatibility ;)

Yeah, your favourite worm is back, fellas!! :D

Seeing Ahrimanes' B.Orchid, he already implemented KI phrases and a system it counts the hits to put the phrases, so I guess Jim could be a combo counter (with the hilarious phrases) after all :P Ripped a few ones (like 4-5) and the COMBO BREAKER! one, then clean, resize them and apllying 256 to add in the SFF... wish me luck on this!!

EAT COW!!

OK, back to work on Jim, now just focusing in Claytalities (that stuff is harder than I though) and making the one in this gif: Cow From Sky. Also ripping sprites I need for Jim, especially certain gethits and a last pose (the win where he shoots himself)

And I was thinking in making 2 versions of Jim, the accurate one and an Arrange mode, just with their moves, specials and supers (with no combos, Insanes and Claytalities). I'll make a poll with this, if it got enough votes, I'll do it...

Yeah, Jim now has CF63 1/3 sparks thanks to Orbinaut, now finishing the first claytality and seeing what's up with the Insane Combos (a.k.a. ultras). Also, you can see the super that didn't appear in the video, the Stairway to Heaven (diag-up autocombo)

Also, I found a common state (7698) who's already the squish one (that's POTS' Ryu against Jim... and he already has those sprites and anim!!), needs more fixes and a way about freeze the anim in one sprite (still asking how to do that, I accept help here :))

And locked the post!! Wow, very few difference, but at last I keep with Jim until I finish. But since the vote for an Arrange version is so high, I'll make a separate DEF where you can use Jim as a normal character (that's mean no Claytalities or Insane Combos, just the typical specials-supers char ;) thanks to all for voting!!

CF63 1/3 Lifebars:
Yeah, I'm still working on them, too. There're almost ready with the look, the time font, the "fight" and "you win!" big words already ripped and implemented, and the sound FX, with announcer added. Now making fightfx's sff and air with Orbinaut' ripped sparks, starting to rip the "you lose" anim (for the p2, u know) and making the fnt file for combo counter. I was thinking in release them along with Jim, but if I finished before him, probably I'll release them alone ;)

Earthworm Jim:
At last I could make palettes and now Jim has 12 colors to choose (for the complicated sprites, I just changed the blue lines for other colors u_u) and still working on claytalities, mainly improving and fixing Cow From Sky. But I would need some help with certain states and bugfix, so I would need betatesters who gave me better info (and maybe solutions) for the stuff Jim needs.

Sorry for don't show all of this with shots, but I don't have my pendrive and I don't have MUGEN in this PC (office, u know)... soon more news, but as you read before, not just about your favorite worm ;)

I sent Jim's beta to some testers here in the forum to fix more things I didn't noticed before and for help for Claytalities. I already fixed 80% of all the bugs and also I almost finished Cow From Sky. Now replaying the game for take "sprites" I need for more moves and for "re-rip" some fugly ones...

Oh, almost forgot: fixed and now with a playable combo system and added the first of 6 Insane Combos :sugoi:

Thanks ;) Sadly, it's true... the 2 N64 CF games instead sprites, characters are JPG animated in 3D backgounds. That's the reason so many years ago I tried to "rip" some of them with fugly results... until now

I fully understand how you feel when dealing with 2.5D/3D sprite rips.............  :yeses:

More news of Jim!! :D
Still fixing Claytalities, Cow From Sky is almost ready (just battling with p2 custom states) and now making  another one: Knock Off The Island, the heavy uppercut that goes away the enemy from Klaymodo Island and stamps into the screen. Already have an image of Klaymodo but now I'm battling with angle states and scaling stuff (making something similar than Blue Sue Goo's Off the World Claytality, but without shatter the screen)

Oh, and making a new Insane Combo, but I need some sprites to rip... and about that I'll need help about grab sprites, especially the one who make headwormbutts to the enemy when grabbing

About Jim... as all you know, I was busy making Claytalities and Insane Combos, and I didn't noticed that someone already made Jim, but it's custom and won't have the stuff I'm making for Jim (and for the latter chars I would make from this game), so I'm thinking seriously about releasing him as the state he has now. At least the sprites are better than the other version IMO :P

What do you say?? Should I release my version of Jim or not?? :???:

Yeah, but I wasn't sure about it until that release, that complied me a lot... I think I should change my plans and fixing some little stuff to making the release during the next week :P

There's no need for a "competition" between both versions. Release yours when you're happy with how it is. :)
Note that I'm not saying you should not release a 80% version now, as it would be nice to try him anyway.

OK, guys... finally Jim has been released!! Now finishing the lifebars, I hope to finish them soon ;)

Oh, and I'm not sure what character could be the next, so I made a poll to all of you ;)

And don't worry, I'll keep working on Jim until I finish it definitively

No, Tiny doesn't appear in CF 63 1/3, only in first SNES chars :P but it should be cool to make some of those chars a la CF63 1/3 (thinking about Blue Suede Goo)

Boogerman is more than a ClayFighter character, he is also the protagonist of his own game.  We need more Interplay representatives.  After him, convert Bad Mr. Frosty, because I think he is the protagonist of the ClayFighter series.
My Mugen Wish List would include protagonists, mascots and other iconic characters with everything they have brought straight from their source with little or no editing.

Don't like Ickybod too much, but I like Kung Pow and Sumo Santa (but not enough to adding to the poll)... yeah, I'll consider them in a future ;)

Also, working again on the lifebars as you could see in Jim's screenshots, I need to re-rip in a big size for 640x480+ resolutions, I hope to put the mocking combo names depending of the hits you made, like "Cheesy Combo" or "Oh that was a Queen Combo" :biker: like in KI screenpack, I should ask for help to Fire-Lord to that, I guess :P

I don't think you can have the announcers in (mugen limitation), but I think *somehow* you can have it have the messages as a font.

Phantom Blood had a changing message per number of hits in his CFJ lifebars, try giving him a ring.

Well, actually I tried to put announcer voices in lifebars, but it's too limited in that aspect u_u

Oh, I know about Fire-Lord's KI lifebars only... yeah, I'll take a look to Phantom lifebars then ;)

Did you know that there's sprites ripped for almost everyone from Clayfighter 63 1/3 on Spriter's Resource? You'll have to remove a white outline of characters, and there's alot of colors, but its still easier than ripping them yourself. (I'm halfway done with Blob's main attacks right now, and its only been a few days!  ;D)

Yeah, I used Blob's sheet. I'm not bothered by the 256 colors. Besides, Blob has the smallest palette.(because he's only green, red, white and black, while someone like Bonker has White, Red, Blue, Yellow, Black,Brown etc.)

Until now, all my creations are compatible with 1.0, so I don't see the problem... unless my Megaman lifebars don't work well on 1.0, but I don't think so :P

OK, starting to rip him and probably he will be the next character from CF I'll make instead Boogerman (who's harder to rip than Frosty). Apart of the big portrait, I found an old sprite I ripped (for fake/troll reasons) and I'm reusing his palette and adjusting it just like I did with Jim. And since the palettes are just Frosty's hat colors, this will be easier than I thought.

So, here're the shots for starting:
