So if you were following me in this thread, I've been making an NES/Famicom demake of the office from Five Nights at Freddy's 2. I've made pretty much every animatronic that shows up in the office, but for fun, maybe it would be neat to have other robots in there!

Maybe not the best example, but come on, work with me, people.

Building off of the idea that the materials are supposed to be like a Hong Kong bootleg game, and that these bootleg games tend to have unrelated extra characters in them for no reason whatsoever, my hope is that we can get some non-Five Nights at Freddy's characters in there. Anyway, here are the ground rules:

  • Try to limit your palette as much as possible. I'm not imposing NES/Famicom limits on you (although it's an optional challenge, which I'll get to later), but nothing too colorful.
  • Templates are provided at the bottom. Stay within the black boundaries.
  • ADDITIONALLY, Black is free. If you do a challenge, using the color black will NOT count against your color limit. The magenta doesn't count either, but you can't use that for coloring.

Here are some examples if you didn't visit the thread.

So now, what are the challenges, you're asking? Well, they're optional "handicaps" you can put on yourself to challenge your inventiveness. While you're not required to do any of these, I thought it would be a fun way to get some ideas on your animatronic. There's a lot of them, so I put them in spoilers for you.
Spoiler: Challenges (click to see content)
If you decide to take any of those challenges, just make a mention of them in your submission post.

Anyway, here's hoping we get some cool entries. I might post some pointers on easy ways to convert 3D Models over to NES-quality sprites, but that'll be later if anything.

Good luck!

EDIT: For those of you that are doing the Cupcake Challenge (NES/Famicom rules), here's all the colors the NES is capable of displaying.

Yes, a big chunk of that is duplicate colors.
If you're going to attempt the Foxy Challenge, you can find a bunch of the available console palettes on this page

EDIT 2:
We got templates

The one on the left is the left vent, and the one in the right is the hallway. The right vent is a mirror image of the left vent.

Do you think you'll take anything for the air vents? And if so, can you offer a blank template of the air vent to use?

That's actually pretty darn impressive! The only thing is the claw getting clipped off. If you don't mind working it again, I'll give you SPECIAL PERMISSION to extend the template so you can fit the whole claw in.

Looking good so far! I guess it's okay to throw in one that I made.

I WASN'T READY FOR HANDSOME FREDDY

Spoiler: Challenges Met (click to see content)

Oh man, I kept seeing that image but I never knew where it was from (I ended up googling it). It works really well!

Spoiler: Challenges Met (click to see content)

Hmmmm... It definitely looks like it has potential and now I want to read that manga. But I think where the image takes a hit is the details. It took me a while to figure out that those things were hands, and I think the hair's shading is a bit too complicated for the style. I think I'd probably make the outlines look a bit more clear so that it's easier to tell where the hair ends and the hand begins. I dunno if you do this, or if anyone does this here, but I find it easier to do the initial art in grayscale because it makes you focus on getting the shading and details correct, after which you apply the colors.

It's a good start though.

Spoiler: Challenges Met (click to see content)

Not bad, although I wonder about the direction he's facing. I think it would work better if it was mirrored.

I didn't make any today because I'm working on some Christmas projects. I'm liking the variety we're getting so far!

Nice ginger mustache and eye nipples.

No, really, if there is something that is less scary than the animatronics themselves, then that something is Sonic.exe. It's simply a shitty design that is just about as "good" as your average Sonic fan character.

Besides, your sprite is too far from being 8 bit.

Too sleepy to do challenges right now (was at a plethora of christmas parties and am running off of a combined total of six hours of sleep over the course of three days), so I'll put up some comments for now, then probably go back and edit the challenges back in or clarify stuff.

MUCH better. The bottom-most hands could use a little more detail though, and as far as the hair goes, I'd probably give the hair a bit more definition (ie: make the spikiness stand out a bit more). It might not look 100% like the original, but within these constraints, sometimes you have to sacrifice accuracy for readability.

Otherwise, a DEFINITE improvement over the last one.

Okay not sure what's going on here (or I don't get the reference, I dunno), but I'm really digging the design

aaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I love how it turned out though, and pulls off the shitty Hong Kong bootleg look well.

I'm gonna give feedback on these two together because there's one big thing they have in common, and I want to remind everyone posting submissions about the big template: It's a hallway.

Now granted, Forever gets a pass because I read Jojo and I know what his ability is so it makes sense for him to be able to do that (although he might be a little bit on the large side), but I just want to remind everyone to not treat the hallway like an airvent.

It's really sad because I like 100 Mega Shock's spriting style. :'(

Alright, so I'll ignore the creepypasta root for this one (However, I really dug the Jigglypuff on the last page, and if someone makes a convincing Negative Mickey from "Abandoned By Disney" I will be theirs forever), and since I didn't specifically say you had to follow NES style (although it's highly encouraged), I'm going to review this on its own merits.

The first immediate problem with the first sprite is the hands. It doesn't make sense to make those pixelated and the rest not, there needs to be more details there. Even if we went to the next gen with the Super Nintendo with its Mode 7 scaling capabilities, it wouldn't make sense for the body and hands to be separate in this scenario. I know hands are annoying to draw, but that's something you need to be able to do if they're at the front of the sprite.

The second is that there's some really weird stuff going on with the body. Was it scaled up with a filter and then cleaned up? Because something about it reminds me of 2Xsai or one of those weird filters they use on some emulators. Then you have some bits that are very straightly angled (the ears) then you have parts that are weirdly rounded (his head... spike thing? I dunno what you call those). It's okay to be scaling other artwork for this, either up or down, but doing so should only serve as a guideline. If you just scale it and apply a palette, it's not going to turn out right.

The second sprite... well, not to be rude, but it's actually a lot worse than the first because while it has less colors, it also doesn't look like it was sprite at all (especially those hands).

yea the hands were a major problem to me, but I left it pixelated  because they kinda look liked they were closer to the player, but I probably tried my best to convince myself so I didn't have to mess with them. Also yes I also did scale it. Im extremely sorry if thats a bad thing. I scaled a small sprite too. I was thinking it was small enough to go in the vents, but then again it wouldn't of gotten the people attention I guess. Im working on a better sprite so dont worry. But one thing id like to get straight on is that is it okay if he looks non-NESy and his first palette is okay?

Regarding NES palettes, I still think he uses a bit of too many colors, specifically the bloody eyes, in my opinion.

Again, in my opinion, if you want to do something scary that is related to Sonic... I really, really suggest that you try going for something more legit. Sonic.exe had been forced into everything ever since it had been made, and it's hardly scary, even compared to average creepypasta content. It's so bad it's not even funny, it's just another blood eyed character. If anything, there is official Sonic content that is far creepier than Sonic.exe, or at least hilariously creepy, such as:

Which also seems far easier to put into a NES palette.

as we all know, Brak's Dad briefly gained superpowers after being bitten by a radioactive camel; the powers he gained included, among other things, the ability to jump and hang from high places. Thus we have this: this is not an animatronic, it's just Brak's Dad, hanging out in a vent.

From the way I imagine it, these would look completely different from the animatronics or any of the guests that are made into a likely style. Copy 'n pasting things from unlikely games is just... a big no. It would ruin the stage.

At this point I dunno if anyone cares about me documenting challenges, but I'm nursing a cold right now, so everything I grade is just by my own appraisals. Also apparently I need to do some rule clarification but first, the entries.

Hah, nice. I can imagine that dude crawling through a vent.

I'll probably go for the first one, but yay I can actually use your art now!

Fun fact: I am a huge fan of this movie. Consider it in!
Here another one Chuky

original sprite by Balthazar
I'll ask Balth if he's okay with putting it in

Looks cool, no need to edit anything. My main thing was not having something reach across half the stage because then it would look super awkward when it blinked out.

Ahahaha, Bender. Might use the first one.
a goddamn orgy of entries
holy shit, I'm gonna look over each of these and pick the best ones (although Wreck-it-Ralph and Evil Animatronic Bugs Bunny are in, and I really want to get that spider in)
That first sprite looks like a good concept. However, like I've said before a few times, focus less on color variety and more on establishing details and dynamic shading. For example, I'd get rid of the blue for the sword and use multiple shades of gray to make it look like a katana (I dunno, I didn't watch Hellsing so I dunno if those are katanas).

That vent sprite is DELICIOUS though, I don't care if it's from a creepypasta (I didn't even know what the source creepypasta was either, and now I want to know). Also, I'm curious, what's the palette you used for it? I'd guess one of the Gameboy Color backwards compatibility palettes, but I'm probably way off.

It's a bit big for it, but... maybe.

Also holy shit, you're the thread MVP or SOMETHING.

NOW FOR THE UNFUN ADMINISTRATIVE SHIT :( :( :(

I thought these had to have a certain shading style like the examples in the first post, not random images that fit in the template...
While that would be cool, let's be honest: If that was all that was allowed, there'd be nothing but entries from old Rare games. Also it's common for Hong Kong bootlegs to have inconsistency up the yin-yang, so it's fine.

From the way I imagine it, these would look completely different from the animatronics or any of the guests that are made into a likely style. Copy 'n pasting things from unlikely games is just... a big no. It would ruin the stage.
Alright, so lemme just get this out of the way. Never did I say you *couldn't* copy-paste shit into the templates. I mean obviously I'm going to gravitate towards originally sprited works, but if something is edited and it either looks good or is funny, it should be okay.

Also, I want to mention that there will be two variations of the stage, one which will just feature the FNaF2 animatronics, and one with the cameos. So if anyone is concerned about consistency, well the whole second alt stage is going to be devoted to silliness.

FINALLY, I thought this was a given, and I don't want to sound like a dick, but I'm not obligated to use every single entry here. I mean, yeah it would be cool to have all of them in, but then the cameos would pretty much be dominated by Iced and City_Hunter. I want to have a good variety of sprite styles and a good variety of artists in there.

Also you should totes sprite something, MotorRoach

Thank you for the crits, I wasn't sure how to deal with his grey jacket, and it looked odd without anything to differentiate the face from the rest of his attire, hence the skin tone.  He uses knives, so I figured that a single color would be sufficient since they aren't multicolored.  I'll probably try to fix this one later.

Godzilla NES Creepypasta.  You're actually correct, by the way, the red Gameboy colors xD

The reason I don't post more is because 1: I rarely have anything to say, and 2: I stink at saying it XP

Hope I'm not late.

At first, I tried limiting myself to NES colors (which indeed I used), but I decided "fuck everything" and use two colors from the SNES (I think; I'm really bad when it comes to this stuff, so forgive my impudence).
If anyone can guess where the ungodly parts of this mess came from, you get a cookie ;)

  • No meaning to me, just an empty box.
For your fighting game stage based on shitty animatronic horror game, an animatronic from a shitty fighting game?
