Lol. im pretty sure he knows what Winrar is.

If you're looking for something to make 100mbs 50mbs i don't think anything can do that, but winrar seems to get pretty compressive if you flick around some setting. :P

That depends on the original source file and how much the data inside it allows to be compressed. I've seen files compressing up to 95% whereas other only compressed to 1%

He didn't ask for programs, he asked for file formats. Dude.

7z is pretty good for compression ratio, and the application is very pleasant to use as well. I like it.

Do keep in mind though that those ~1.5% mean nothing in a world where everyone has hundreds of gigs of hdd and 100kb/s transfer rate around the world.

7zip is probably the best program besides WinRar. Just set them to max/best compression, change the dictionary sizes and viola. Uha is probably the best format out there, but it is little known and not really used anywhere besides universities I believe. All in all, your compression ratio is determined by the type of file you are trying to compress. Executables, text, and jpeg's all compress well. On the other hand, file formats that are already compressed by their nature (ogg, mp3, gif, avi, mpeg) will compress vey little if at all; though it IS possible the gains don't justify the cpu time needed to do the action.
You'll just end up with a "container file" with a ratio of about .5-2%.
Not very efficient.

Well what are you trying to compress?
Files with lots of redundancy or large numbers of similar files should be compressed with a format that uses LZH compression.
Large files in general typically don't compress well at all, and you might be better off splitting the file in multiple archives.

Okay well i already had Winrar, i use that for my everyday extractions and archiving and i just downloaded 7zip like some of you said. The reason i asked this was because i saw people like Kong and Warusaki3 compressing their files at reasonable sizes, for instants i downloaded one Warusaki3 characters that was originally like 17mb or so and was compressed to 7mb to 8mb and i was shocked because mine are never that small. :o

Those two sentences had nothing to do with each other.
Hence the extra long space between them.

The new version of WinRAR allows heavy compression.........i compressed a 400Mb file into 100Mb with that.......I think the version was 4.65....

Guys, it also depends of what you're trying to compress. Have you never wondered why your jpeg, avi or mp3 files don't lose a lot of size when compressed ? Well, guess what, because the format in which they are is already a compressed format.

And last but not least, the content's structure of every file will also affect the compression ratio. You could have a 4Gb iso image of a DVD, which may have 4 Gb of dummy files (that is, 4Gb of nothing but zeroes) which can compress to just a 1Mb file.
