custom portrait help

I started replacing the select portraits with custom packs that I found and they work no problem, but whenever I try to make my own portraits I can't figure which color to remove.  all the tutorials that I've read say it's only one color, but mine shows like 12 different pinks, and the one that I got on a fluke had a pink border even after a completely cleaned it out.  p.s. yes I zoomed in to the tinest pixels and cleaned all the pink. I've been trying almost all of yesterday and I still don't get it

That's because the invisible set black you have isn't actually in position 0. Fighter factory puts the transparent colour in the bottom right.

You need to make sure all the shit colours are the same colour, you can't do that in FF, all you can do is make them look the same. The pixels are tied to their position on the palette unless you redefine them prior to paletting the pic.

Use MSpaint to touch it all up first, Then add it.

I don't quite get that, I mean the tutorials say after you convert it to the 256 they should all be in the right place and then pic the color you want transparent out of your pallete and switch it out with  the bottom right corner.  is that wrong???

btw I'm using gimp to make my portraits and paint.net to convert them into 256 bmps

Yes, but the bits you recolour ONCE it's a palette, despite the fact you've coloured them black are not the same black that's in the correct place. Basically, you have 20 blacks, but only one is transparent. If you like, palette it, recolour the bits, increase then decrease depth again.

I tried doing that with black, white, green, and pink, but I can't find the one I'm suppose to change. it's kinda fustrating to because the tutorials show only one solid color, for example pink, that shows up as the background.  I'm doing exactly as the tutorials show so I don't get why I'm getting twenty different colors

Badly formatted picture from the start is the general problem. Stop using fighter factory. Put it in MSpaint. Clean it up and make sure the outside edge isn't blurred at all. Use gimp to EDIT the palette and put your background colour in slot 0. Then save it.

what is mspaint for that I'm not suppose to be doing in ff???

as for the blurr I used both paint.net and gimp to clean up the edges and it still showed up.  not to mention I can't just open up the palette that looks anything near what's in ff with gimp and  if I  can I have no clue how to do that

Sigh, fine, use paint.net, whatever. The problem is you do NOT have a clean palette when you shove it into FF.

Gimp>Image>Mode>Indexed>Use Optimised
Colors>Map>Rearrange Color Map

Use that to move things around. Slot 0 is labeled, make sure you have ONE black. Save when you're done. Should retain the current palette, if you add from there it ought to be fine.

The one that is selected. Alternatively, Try things. Just cos i haven't provided a super accurate guide doesn't totally mean you should disengage lateral thinking. If you want to stick with mugen you're going to NEED lateral thinking. Keep going.

then hop am I suppose to,

 ">Map>Rearrange Color Map

if I can't open such option, so it's not about disengaging lateral thinking, if it's not accurate I  can't do it, so please help

After you've done the bit where you index the picture, which is all you're having trouble with, you'll be able to do the next bit. Honestly. I don't use Gimp at all, what you see up there is me using the program for the first time. I use PSP7 and always have.

did all that and still got the same problem I did by doing it through ff, except now it's only 4 colors and now the background doesn't dissappear but a random color on the portrait does. an  example is the tifa portrait I did, it showed the transparency as white so I swapped it for the right color. but instead of dissappearing like it should of it just swapped colors. this is starting to get fustrating  :S

then I don't see how you can give an instrction for something that isn't in gimp, if it's your first time using it.  I think you got that from the stage making tutorial.

Post the clean image. I will MAKE the portrait and i will use Gimp to do so. Put it on anything you like, as long as it's not a jpg it will be fine.

If you want them both done. Yes. Normally i wouldn't do this but i really want to see what's making it so difficult.

Oh, i thought i was getting the Adel one.

First off, these are not clean images. All i have done to them at this moment is reduced colour depth and set the colour i wish to be transparent as Pink

As you can see there are white lines and artifacts all over the place on the chick (and part of her dress is see through) and the dude is surrounded in black specks. Basically, whoever screenshotted these in the first place did a crap job, or they've been a JPG at some point. I'm inclined to the second one, because i got colour loss on the chick on the first reduce.

I'll still set them up properly, but you need to use CLEAN images, not messy ones. If it loses colour when you reduce it, and the palette is full, you have a bad image.

Edit: Ok, here they are 10 minutes later. Compare the 2 and see how these ones have no extra shit that MIGHT have been interfering with the pure black transparency you've been using

?? You have shared palette turned off right? If BG goes away in FF then the transparency is correct. If it doesn't go in game then it's using some other palette. Can't look now, will have to wait.

Oh, above images are png and you should convert them to PCX with a proper tool and retaining the palette info. I would have uploaded as pcx files, but they don't show as images online because it's such an old format.

yeah I know to make them into pcx, but I managed to fix it so it's okay
