Dan Savage, sex advice columnist and founder of the "It Gets Better" movement (which helps prevent gay teens from killing themselves because of bullying), has been accused of bullying poor, vulnerable Christians (a very small minority whose rights are trampled everyday [citation needed]) at a school speech.

Right now only Fox News, bastion of fair and balanced news reporting is talking about this but I think this story is so big even the lamestream media will cover it.

Let's all pray they don't kill themselves over it.

MORE DAN SAVAGE FUN FACTS:
he is awesome
he came up with the alternative meaning of "santorum", after Rick Santorum said a bunch of shitty things about gay people
he also has talked about faith before in this touching story

Look at how bad he was bullying them, by taunting them about his man in a speedo. Truly this man is a savage.

Quote
Savages’ is not without controversy.  During the address when he began talking about the bible, making a Christian school got up and walk out when Savage said, “We can learn to ignore the bullsh** in the Bible about gay people, the same way we have learned to ignore the bullsh** in the Bible about shellfish, about slavery, about dinner, about farming, about menstruation, about virginity, about masturbation.”

He went on to say how the Bible talks about slavery, and people ignore what the bible says about slavery because the Bible got slavery “wrong”. He also explains how people are dying since many can’t overcome the hurdle of living with people being gay since the bible says it is bad.

He is a downright monster, attacking all those students.

Now you know why no one else is even touching this story... It doesn't seem like a big freaking deal. What this guy did is probably something other networks aren't dealing with because, you know, there are more important things in the world then the welfare of a group of christians being 'bullied' (and that word being used loosely mind you) by a sex expert.

BTW, those comments you posted Iced: Those are the kind of people that our country could be better off without.

Dan is clearly in the wrong, that kind of language does not belong in schools, especially if its supposed to be a motivational speech.
I wouldn't have left, but I don't disagree with the people who chose to.  As soon as you cross the line from just being an atheist to telling others straight up that their religion is bullshit, that's evangelism.  There are better, more tactful ways to get your message across that won't step all over people's feelings.

tl;dr Dan Savage is not a good role model

i will say this
i do not agree with fox news on any issue i can remember them taking a side on
i, for the most part, will not agree with anything said by those attacking savage
i think that radical conservatism and fundamentalism are an ingrown hair

but

while i do not disagree with any points made by savage, i think he could have been a lot more tactful and that the whole debacle was probably in poor taste

taunting highschool students doesn't really seem to be the best course of action
especially when it will bring up such an obvious counterpoint from the opposition

I really don't see his language being very offensive? He's just saying what he thinks, about a subject that is very near and dear to him. From just the way he was talking you can get a sense that he's been the victim of bullying because of his sexual orientation. And that weighs on you.

And when you have kids killing themselves over bullying like that, taking the offensive seems like the best stategy.

Yes, he could have been a lot more tactful. But walking out because someone says things that don't line up with your beliefs is just ludicrous.

It was a speech about anti-bullying at the National High School Journalism Conference.

I dont think that his dialogue required more tact, if you are a kid studying for being a journalist you cant just leave crying out of the room as soon as someone says something that you might not agree with.
Not that what he said was that strange to begin with, to the point of his message it carried a lot of weight, even if christians are going to cry about being bullied. The man was persecuted all his life, founded a group to try to prevent kids from dying because mostly of those people, and the minute he has anything harsh to say they are crying and running for the door?

all i'm saying is that the potential complaints are obvious and should surprise no one
the right's response to this was to be expected

i'm not at all defending the actions of the students who walked out
i don't feel that this is so much an issue of right and wrong, or how things should be
potential journalists should be exposed to ideas, opinions and points of view that they do not subscribe to
but, unfortunately, that is not the way these things work, especially when you tack the words 'high school' on to it

in today's political climate, more tact would have been needed to prevent an outcry

then again dan savage is dan savage
he said what he was going to say, and i'd bet that he was not overly surprised when people complained

The only people that could claim christians are being bullied are the obvious ones, I dont think that any tact or concern is needed towards them, they would have reacted like that to any message that pushed the idea that homos are not super gaylord monsters that breath hate and will never be happy.
I dont see any need to concern with complaints from the obvious sources that will always push themselves as victims. If you saw the video, you can tell that his message was valid and needed to be exposed in such an environment, had he sugar coated it further it would fall in deaf ears, the kind of people that would run from anything being said negatively about their religion doesnt care that much about what you are saying, just that they are not being praised.

This incident just proves that common sense really isn't very common. Both sides of issues like this are usually of the mindset that "grr this is my position you either accept it or go fuck yourself". That's not the way you get someone to accept or tolerate your ideology. Soft answers turn away wrath, aggression breeds more aggression. A simple concept few seem to be able to grasp; everyone is too busy being uptight and outraged about everything. You don't have to be a prick to get your point across, and at the end of the day it simply diminishes it. If both sides just took the time to understand, accept, agree to disagree if you have to, and coexist instead of trying to abolish each other the world would be a much better place.

In short: be nice to each other and treat everyone with respect. My 2 cents.

Sorry, the concept exists.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/tact

So your post is an opinion, not a fact
Obviously I mean in the case of bullies and such. Have you met bullies (big ones) and tried tact with them ?
And in this case here, it's not even really bullying, it's more than that, the Christians that bully gay kids are those that really see it as fundamentally against nature. Tact means nothing when they think you're the incarnation of evil on Earth.
If I struggled to the end of my determination, to the end of my way of life with my followers, if the result is ruin, then this ruin is inevitable. Grieve. Shed tears. But you cannot regret.

Probably the part where he didn't avoid the possibility of offending people, and took the Penn and Teller approach. When you brashly call something out that people believe in for political, religious, or philosophical reasons it going to piss someone off.

I don't disagree with him or his message, but to say it was tactful? Come on now.. -Chad Warden

With that said I don't think it needed to be any more tact than it was, it looked like that institution was a College/University, it's not like their virgin ears were defiled or anyone's faith was tainted because it was the first time someone brought up a point against the bible in their life time. It was a valid point, he said a naughty word, and the media masturbated over it.

completely agree with you. Media is masturbating on a naughty word, and he didnt need to be more tactful for what it was.
Which is why all that hubub at byakko looks weird, its as if its implied he needed to measure his words to deliver the message he did, lest this would happen. ( when we know it would happen at the first moment his words were any harsher than praises )
