  • does this look like the face of mercy?
Quote
A teenager who took her own life after her parents banned her from accessing her own Facebook page wrote a suicide note saying she couldn't live without the social networking site.

Aishwarya Dahiwal, 17, was found hanged in her room in the western Indian city of Parbhani Wednesday night after an argument with her parents over the excessive amount of time she spent on Facebook, as well as the lengthy conversations she would have on her cellphone.

"Like all parents, their intentions were only to ensure that the girl did not go astray," investigating officer G. H. Lemgude told the Indo-Asian News Service. "They advised her to concentrate on her technical studies and stay away from long mobile chats and social networking sites."

In a suicide note she wrote shortly after the argument, Aishwarya blamed her parents and the restrictions they put on her Facebook use.

"Is Facebook so bad?" she wrote. "I cannot stay in a home with such restrictions as I can't live without Facebook."

Newsweek Pakistan says that, with Internet access spreading rapidly across India, many high school students are ditching their phones in favor of communicating exclusively over Facebook.

And I thought I got testy without internet access for a few weeks.
Has the internet taken over your social life to a point where you couldnt live without it? More to the point, have social sites done that for you?

I'd just get bored horribly without it since I don't have any irl friends, also it would suck to not be able to get some information easily and it would make some things be annoying. At one point it was a huge part of my life and I threw a huge fit when I lost access to it as well as losing my computer due to a power issue with it, I felt like I'd go insane since I considered internet friends a huge priority in my life and I had nothing else to care for sadly.

In Venezuela?? Really??

It pains me to see people resort to this type of behavior. It seems with the strides and advances in technology we make, people seem to become dumber and socially inept.

It reminds me of that line from Hot Tub Time Machine where the hot girl asks the son to get a hold of her. He is like "Do I facebook you?? Text you??" She replied with "Call me."

While we may have 1,000's of ways to communicate, you can't beat the old fashioned way, But with tech becoming so advanced, people don't have to do that anymore and suddenly actual communication becomes an issue. I have a phone... but I hardly make calls on it.

:omg:

That SUCKS. I actually got out of the Facebook loop a bit. I check in only once or twice a week and I got rid of a lot of unnecessary friends. I like it because it keeps me in contact with cool people I don't normally see. I also hate how it's become an advertising vehicle and pretty much a slew of nonsense. I use Google Circles with three of my best friends and it's fucking awesome.

So instead, I took my addictions here!! :ninja: But Guild is much better than Facebook anyway. Just saying.

Social life?  What social life?  Full time college students with a 230 mile daily commute (and want to keep that 4.0 GPA) have no social life.  I think my social internet time has gone from 2-3 hours a day to 15 minutes if I'm lucky.

Facebook is fun and all, I check it daily, but one can't make out through it.
And one does not simply live without a nice making out session at least once per month. :P

Or gather the friends to get drunk, "watch" a movie, go dancing and fun stuff like that.
To quote Lt. Frank Drebin: "Cheer up, Ed. This is not goodbye. It's just I won't ever see you again."

I really don't have any problems with Facebook, but some people can't really get used to something like it, IMO. Most people here, in my city, use it for pointless and unnecessary drama. A lot of fights and confrontations start when someone posts something on Facebook here. As much as I hate to say it, I'd honestly think that someone would die or kill someone over something over Facebook anger responses. It's kinda the same responses as an angry text or an angry phone call. I don't really go there, but I hear a lot stuff from the people at my community college.

I kinda feel bad for the girl. She's one of those people who weren't used to having something like that. Especially since my little brother is kinda like that. He thinks that not contacting someone on Facebook or ooVoo is very bad. That's why I stop doing, even though I really want to finish, what I do on my laptop to let him use it. He's also very immature and aggressive when he doesn't get to go socialize EVEN THOUGH HE'S TECHNICALLY NOT SEEING THE FUCKING PERSON. So I don't want to have to argue over something so stupid.

I'm okay with Facebook and I enjoy it and I'll check it out in my downtime, but I hate it when people use it as a substitute for actually getting together and hanging out. If you don't have that physical interaction (I mean just being in the presence of someone), the dynamics of the relationship really change and it's hard to have attachment. Not to mention, there are quite a few people I know who are nice in person but are huge assholes on Facebook. Which one is the real you?!

Now don't get me wrong, I have a few close friends on the internet that I've never met in person, but when you refuse to hang out with a friend in person and would rather IM them on Facebook or post pictures of cats on their walls, then you might as well make a friend with someone on the 'net, because it's basically the same thing.

Also while I'd say that it's really fucking stupid to be attached to a social messaging system to the extent this girl was, she's really just the product of a generation of social cripples.

Facebook... ugh.

I only have one because everyone else I know does (same way some people get certain games only because everyone is playing them).

And they say drugs are dangerous... parents need to monitor their kids phone/net usage somehow. In her case (being 17) she should know better, but I'm sure her interest in FB wasn't a spur of the moment thing (I'd say she's known about FB for 3 years minimum).

this is quite sad that one can go to such extreme over access to something as trivial as FB: i mean the parents "just" remove the access to her page, not to the fucking computer/internet!!

this is what happens in a situation where you don't have/can't make friends, you feel socially inadequate/insecure & you think the world owns you anything because you're fucking 17year old

There is really no difference between an obsessive FB user an obsessive MMO player.

Most people, including me, use Facebook to easily talk to other people like my relatives in the US. It's also the most useful thing for us here to keep up with current events (like that earthquake last week). It's pretty useful in general when you want to talk to everyone you know but can't have them around or just to know what everyone thinks of things.

I don't get why people think FB is only used to try find someone to make a social life out of. It's not a dating site.

Well said there really. The whole "it's too much drama" and such only comes from adding stupid people, if you only keep friends you actually like and you enjoy talking to then it's a nice site.

There was a girl who hung herself after being kicked off the telly and missing a reality TV show. I'm hoping I don't sound like too much of a judgmental ass, but half of this are kids not realizing how goddamn serious suicide is.

I really hope there's something underneath this tragedy.

Agreed.  It's pretty obvious that there was a lot more going on here than "the crazy girl did too much facebooks."  It's stupid to look at this story and use it as an excuse to make fun of Facebook when it clearly goes a lot deeper than that in reality.

I guess like anything, Facebook (and many other social networks) can become addictive, quite as much as crack, alcohol, Ect. too much of anything is bad, so this is just a plain result of it. a bit extreme, but to each his own. :p
