Yeah, here i'll be making editing a lot FX's, either from SF3,CVS, KOF, or Remixing KOFXIII. I will also be making some character sprites, but for the moment, that's nearly impossible as i have to learn a lot, because this is a whole new experience.

thanks, although It's pretty obvious that i used the KOF XIII sprites. Is there anything else that you like?

I'm no FX expert but it looks okay. I (And many others) would be able to make a better opinion if you animated them and then showed us the individual sprites that make them all up. Some of them just seemed to be blurred existing sprites but again I'm no expert. MUGEN could always benefit from new FX.

Wind Pillar is... fixed? i dunno i used motion blur at strength = 55 and angle = 55
i now used it at strength = 17 and angle = 55

um.. i don't know what you mean... should i keep them indexed or put them in their original palettes?

yeah that would help, should i also put the priorities of each FX? (ex: look above.)

could please state which fx looks blurred? i attempted a new priority with the wind FX but you said some as if it's not the only one.

The wind, Hadouken, Pyro/Cryokinesis all look blurry as hell, but I bet the Hadouken will look alot better animated. The wind especially just looks plain blurry, and the priorities...ehh, only some people care about such things, I'm not a coder (yet, I might consider going into it) so I don't really care too much about it.

Yes, actually. I think that Hadouken looks much better than Capcom's, I'm actually not quite sure what the second FX goes to, I don't recognize it, and well I don't even remember what the old Akuma FX looked like, so I wouldn't have a clue what it would look like in comparison

The second FX is the impact sprites for the Hadouken above it.

As for the colour thing, I'd say do 2 sets. One of the claw effects in purple, another in their original colours so to speak. It looks a bit weird but hey.

i think it's main purpose is to go "off-screen" which is why capcom cutted it off from the start.

BTW, is there any way to draw good sprite bases on computer?

PS: Cryokinesis jiggles a lot because it's horribly aligned.

ripples look good on fiery effects but not so much on plasma or wind, try radial, also try using the effects with lower values and many times instead of one time with high values.

A simple yet good method is radial-sharpen-radial-sharpen-ripple.

Also you can try double or triple layers. As in do different things with the effect and then mash them together, as long as you keep the axis at the same values and the edits arent too crazy this tends to look cool. One layer with sharpen and radial and another with ripple is an easy combination.
 
Still most of these are already a great start, the coloring part.

Dunno if you are graying everything then editing and then recoloring but IMO thats a better method than editing with the colors on.

not sure how it looks with alpha blending or how better it can get, but as it is right now it's so good that the jitter could be passed off as part of the "effervescence" of the ice sprinkles, that's something

pyrokinesis on the other hand, not so good, mainly for the fact(from what I keep seeing) that generally ripple doesn't preserve the motion of the fire undulating, unless it's a kind of fire that looks like a puff of expanding dissipating smoke which is kinda passable in the case of iori's pillar and kinda more so for his neomax...in other words it'd need more manual work than filter work
someone who knows what I'm trying to say and knows his way around shopping may correct me

maybe just make it like cryo and see

Electricity effects shouldn't be too rippled and round, in my opinion

I understand about the ripples, so, I might redo that tomorrow, but its round shape gives that 'feel' of the fist fxs, concerning that the fists' movements are fast and it's a semi-uppercut.

use more contrast overall (make them way more shiny b4 you edit), once ingame most of these effects will be too transparent, its a side effect of blurring.

2. If necessary give it lightness / contrast.

3. Edit it however.

3D programs but if your comp can't even handle AfterEffects you can forget about that.

In a nutshell — No.


PhotoShop has very, VERY, limited keyframing abilities. You could maybe use that.

Regardless PhotoShop supports video formats like .AVI ( get QuickTime first ) so if god forbid you're editing frame by frame, have your .GIF's turned into .AVI's ( black bg ), import the .AVI and convert it to a smart object if you're going to apply the EXACT same properties to every frame. Skip smart object if you're gonna have varying properties ( edit frame by frame, you choose the frame using the timeline ( window > animation ) and because it's a video it's uncropped and easier to utilize when finished ).


If you follow my first 2 steps you should never end up with washed up colors. In addition to hue/saturation in any program should have a ""colorize"" option, use this instead of color balance.

It doesn't matter what the concluded color is so long as it EXISTS. After you index it with grayscale gradients, THEN give it the true colors by coloring the palette.

It's a good idea to do this before you .GIF the finished product too because it'll already be indexed, which means it won't lose any color information.

they're a bit too blurred and they lack in brightness and contrast.

yaa i know it's wind so ""it shouldn't be so bright"" but that's what addalpha ( mugen code ) is for.

Very nice, I can imagine that the exploding armor effects will look even more superb. Thanks for taking the suggestion, as I said, I doubt that Sean would add them himself, but at least it leaves your great work available to future CVS adaptations of the character too :)

holy crap, I never noticed this thread before, these fx look fantastic. Do you edit only from the games mentioned in the first post? Or whatever? I have some things in mind that I'd like to get done for some of my characters. If you take requests of course. (I'd have to find them first @_@)

My Ermac has it right now. it's the anim that kinda looks like a green star. also if that doesn't work you can look in the UMK3 section of the MKWarehouse which has the fx.

I think there's nothing wrong, but it should look more... "solid"? I mean, it's just glowing, it could have a circle that outlines its shape, maybe in the middle.

hmm you could shift the waves around in the ki shield, so it's not static, just showing it alive a bit more. I love the projectiles for row 14, for all of it though could you make it slightly more pinkish red than purple? the contrast right now is too purple atm. kinda clashes with what I wanted to do. The first deathball looks nice, I have to see it in mugen o really know though.
