Hi i'm Black Star and i'm a newbie at creating things for mugen.

Don't get me wrong i've been playing it since 2005, but i never tried to create anything for it. Now i want to learn how to make characters, and so on. But at the moment, i need help with creating a character. I already now how to do the difinitions of the character, but i don't know how to make the sprites or palettes. I know i might be asking for a bit much since everyone is busy doing their own mugen thing but if there is anyone who is willing to help me please do.

PS: i'm using the (Fighter Factory) program.

If you wanna create character palette from a scratch, you probably needed based character for that. It probably take time but it worthy.

Any character that you feel suitable for your work.
KFM is the popular choice to make your character, use him as your base since he has everything that is required.
as for custom sprites. i cant really tell you i'm more of a objects guy, i cant draw people. You can just try to rip-game character using ripping software.
i personally use !draw3, its a art program thats made for RPG maker 2000, and it only works with 256 color images/palletes. its VERY basic.

List of software.

Ok. Try this first.

You should start to create your custom palette using KFM first.
Draw whatever you want using photoshop or PSP.
For me, im just combining kula stance with her intro with Diana.

After that, open palette editor and recolor the index color.

Dude, your not being a pain. Your new to creating content and that is ok. :)

As for step-by-step tutorials for MUGEN character creation, I suggest checking out Cyanide's Narutorials.

okay i just read the first page of his tutorial, but it said that his is for the newbies that already have their sprites ready....in which i have none.

if i can somehow find a way to get my sprites using a program than i think i'll start with his tutuorial. i watched a youtube video earlier that showed me how to start a charater:

Naming files, seting up his sff, etc. the first thing the vid said to do was:

Oen Fighter Factory
Under file, click open template
than from there, open ur sprites.

That's the only part i'm missing. I already know that making ur sprites will be harder for anyone than just ripping them from somewhere else, so that's what i'm going to do. i just need a good and basic program that even someoen as slow as me can use! --;

Mspaint. Seriously. They're just pictures.

Preferably not the vista/7 version of paint though, cos that's crap.

Nothing wrong with gimp go for it. Although if you don't know MSPaint is inside windows then you're gonna have a lot of trouble simply making sprites.

You said you wanted to make sprites. Right good. DRAW THEM. That's it. Thats how you make them.

Not bother, just... I've been doing this for a while and some questions bug me. I'm not actually trying to be offensive or anything.

The first person ought to have said "Open any image editing program and draw pictures" Cos that's all it boils down to.

okay...so i don't want to bug you because i know u been in the mugen comunity for a very long time and ur tired of hearing some noob ask the same questions that have been answered  a hundred times already, so ....

1. I need to draw an image or find one, and if it's draw....is there a program i should use or just use MS paint like u said?

2. I have to convert it into what format to get it to work for fighter factory, or should i just get a nother conversion program?

3. I already have the basic KFM  stuff down in fighter factory, cause when i open it it gives me a (template) option, and i just click on the electabyte one and it atomaticly give me the KFM basics. that's when i looked at ur tutorials. Although u started it off with the naruto pics and stuff.

4. I understand it will take me some time to get used to doing this, but i just want to give something back to the MUGEN COMMUNITY since they gave me a reason for being on the PC 24 hours a day!

Making a character is a lengthy process, and two important parts are required, Graphics and Codes. Making sprites is something ANYONE can do, but making good ones.. well that's another thing. It will take you a while to be able to make good sprites from scratch, but far less to actually learn to make a character. Go get Winrar, then go to the development resources and  this list of links for sprite packs and download sprite packs of characters. Go to http://spritedatabase.net for sprite sheets (which require you to cut up a large image to get each sprite) Use the sprites to follow along with the narutorials by cyanide.
Once you got the hang of creating a character, THEN search for art tutorials.

There are hundreds or thousands of art tutorials online, so it maybe difficult to find a good tutorial for you.

You will find it simpler to start with ripped sprites. Once you have a working character (and my narutorials will guide you through that much at least) you can think about how you'll do it in a "draw them myself" sense.

okay....so all i do is download the sprites, from the link Edtion gave me and go from there??

Also Cyanide, ur tutorial said i needed PSP, which i don't have. all i have right now is
Fighter Factory is that good enough? or do i need PSP?

Also, one of the links Edtion gave me was (Sprite Database) but i can't download any sprites.

PS: i got the link from the many of those he gave me and it brings me to a page with multiple sprites, but again no way to dl them. here's the image:

Yeah when I first started learning how to make character, I started with Cyanide's narutorials.... and I figured it out on my own without asking anyone but Google for any help -_-
But that's me, and lots of people say that you should ask for help (even If you're too lazy to try it on your own. Not that I'm saying particularly you, just some people.)

In his tutorial he says PSP, without ever mentioning that he was talking about Paint Shop Pro. It's a program by Jasc Software (now Corel) that has many unique features, but none of which are used in the tutorial that can't be done in GIMP or Adobe Photoshop. I personally would prefer paint-shop only for multiple images, and Photoshop for individual images. I don't know anything really about Gimp. It's just a free alternative to paint-shop and Photoshop, and it doesn't load any faster then them [Deleted]

Now the problem with the Image you chose, is that it's from a turn based game (I think) and not a realtime fighting game. It's not meant for an engine like M.U.G.E.N, however some guy made a Ryu using sprites from that game (It wasn't a simple thing to do, but he managed to do it).  As I said, there are two types of sprite sets.
Sprite packs, which are .zip/.rar/.7z  which contains a folder with about 250-1000 images that are usually like 80x120 pixels or some other small size.
Sprite sheets, which are one large image (like the one you posted) which contains all of the sprites that you'd see in a sprite pack + extra images, but aren't aligned like sprite packs normally are. With a sprite sheet, you can follow along with the narutorials completely, but if you choose to do so, you can just use a sprite pack.
Cyanide used a sprite sheet of naruto from the gameboy advance game: Naruto: Ninja Council 2, but you could use new sprites from Naruto: Ninja Council 3 or Naruto Shippūden: Saikyou Ninja Daikesshuu 5.

The problem with both resources is that if the set of images don't have a palette already (sprite sheet never do, sprite packs sometimes do) then you'll have to do this yourself. This is covered for sprite sheets in the narutorials, but sprite packs require more effort because it's normally over 200 images with sometimes different colors not shown in some of the other sprites. That's when I use paint shop pro's batch process (Don't ask about it. Google it. Figure it out on your own.)

Kong's sprite packs - http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=6137c08f94a0a3d30d428c4a089f9196d55e197f959290bd
His Vampire Slayers and Street Fighter Alpha 3 sprite packs have palettes on them already, but it's not ordered where mugen will recognize the transparency, so you'd have to apply a new palette to all the images.

Melty Blood - http://www.justnopoint.com/ggslash/ - Ripped by Kaihoku
Really great animations, just the effects don't have palettes, so you'd have to convert them first or you'll run into some problems that you'll learn to work around.

Street Fighter 3 - http://zweifuss.ca/ (has sounds too) - Ripped by JoRam "Zweifuss"
Street Fighter 3 had great sprites  and smooth animations, and these rips have palettes on them and are also included on the site. You just need to convert them to pcx or bmp because mugen doesn't/didn't recognize png's. Also some sprites will confuse you if you try to add them to your character, because it's hard to figure out how the animations are suppose to loop. Note: some sprites are missing like some of Makoto's stance animation (makoto herself is all in there, but her headband is missing some animation. I think it had it's own animation and that was why zweifuss didn't get it all in.)

I prefer to use the classic Fighter factory and not the newer Fighter factories. I also use Paint shop pro 9 and Photoshop CS5. I started with paint shop pro 7 trial for this tutorial and also naruto's sprites from Ninja Council 3, but you can do whatever you want.

Pallete Creation Tutorial

To start with you're going to need Paintshop Pro 6 or higher. From hereon Paintshop Pro will be referred to as PSP. We're going to apply a correct pallete to the image you see below,

Also, no, stop thinking about it. Do it. Try it. Get things WRONG, it doesn't matter. You will do better giving it a go than agonising about getting it absolutely right. Really. Just try following as best you can. If you can't work it out, ask for help. But only after you've failed. Asking prior to failing isn't actually going to teach you much. Sorting out palettes took me a couple of hours the first time. And this was in the days before we had as many tools as we do now.

Once more. Try.

Agreed with everything else.      But before you go doing that, make sure that you have backup of certain things. (I had a sprite sheet that I liked, and I accidentally saved over the original, then closed it... without remembering where i found it.)
