How did you get introduced to MUGEN?

Title explains it all.

I actually didn't know what Mugen was when I first saw it. I remember a few years back watching a Mario vs. Luigl mugen match on youtube. At first I thought the game was a fighting game in Japan. After a few months passed, I looked up more fighting games since I'm a fighting game fan and discovered more mugen matches. I started to notice that some of matches had different Mugen names, like BrokenMugen and so forth. I then started to look up Mugen more on youtube. When I started looking it up more, I noticed a lot of joke characters and overpowered characters. The more I looked it up, the more I lost interest due to some of the matches being really boring and a lot of overpowered and joke characters. The unnecessarily huge rosters also caused me to lose interest. Then one name changed my whole look on Mugen. That names was Jojo. During a project at another forum, a volunteer of mine said that he was a friend of mine and he would help me with my project. He then linked me to some videos of his creations, which were Megaman characters, which really interested me since I'm also a Megaman Fan. The characters were very unique, even though there wasn't any sound in the vids, and sparked my interest a little. I really started to get into it when I download Jojo's mugen screenpack and characters. I really enjoyed playing with those characters. It inspired me to redownload Mugen, and get a few characters. Now we're here today. I think I have like 60 characters in my Mugen, and I'm planning to make two games using Mugen. I plan on copying my Current Mugen for different characters because my current one has mostly Capcom and SNK characters.

Stories/threads like this always intrigue me.

I was grocery shopping one day back in mid 2006. Hardcore Gamer's PS3 issue caught my eye, so as I opened up the mag to flip through it, a subscription leaflet opened the issue right to their Mugen spread. Seeing Haohmaru fight Pocket Chun Li in a training stage caught my eye, and the article was very well done with explaining exactly what Mugen was. Thinking back, the demeanor of the editor suggested he wasn't too crazy about it.

The idea of researching Mugen went into the backburner for a couple of months. Then one day after work, Mugen crossed my mind, so that Google search that lead to Mugen Infantry and my very first download began. I believe my first character was Sergeus' Predator Warrior. I was awestruck and within a month, I had over 300 characters.

Mugen us now my main gaming endeavor with plenty of portrait projects happening along with frequent visits a day to where I call home. Yup, I love it here.

It all started back in 1999/2000 when i was at a friend's house and saw that he was playing a "certain videogame" where i saw a KOF '94 Ralf fighting against a weird "Kung Fu Guy" and immediately got into the M.U.G.E.N. world since then.

A friend of mine wanted to troll mugen forums, so he set up a warehouse/forum which irritated a lot of people.  Then he started making stages, composing music and really got into it.  He needed to take care of RL stuff and asked me to take over his forum for awhile.

 The first character I ever downloaded was because a very nice young man contacted me and asked to get on MSN and explained to me why he would rather we didn't "warehouse" since his website (public) had that character available and he wanted to track how many times it was downloaded. He showed me where the link was, told me how to download it.  It seemed a shame not to play with mugen after that, so I have about 12 Guiles, M Bison, Evil Ken, (and a couple others) several hundred stages (including my first "stage" stage) and my first character Dragon Claw.

This was in 2007.

Godzilla was the main reason. ;P I saw a video of the big green guy fighting against homer, diablo, etc. around 2007-2008, i was introduced into mugen only by investigating the video a bit more.

I went to my cousin's house once in 2008 and he showed me what "SSJ5 Broly" would look like and I'm like "WTF man..." He told me the game was called mugen. At that time I didn't give it much attention cause I was 11 and I just wanted a PS3, but as I got older it popped into my head one day. So I decided to search up Mugen on the net. I got all these random hacker & virus filled websites so my hopes were gone :( but what actually happened was that my misspelled MUGEN and it came up with completely different results --; So after hours of searching I finally downloaded the old DOS-Mugen. It didnt run on my Vista so I said "screw this". Then in 2010 I searched up mugen again (correctly this time) and I found StormEX's Bleach characters. That was the beginning of everything, from Storm I went to PotS and so on and so forth. And almost 2-3~ years later here I am posting on this thread :D

When I first tried it, many years ago, it was because of some video with Ken vs some weird shadow thing, Inque I think it was called?  Anyways, it was fun for a day but I left shortly after.

Some years after, came across more videos, but now there were some more....interesting creations out.  Someone working on a full game of Saturday morning cartoons like Popeye and Fat Albert, some mini-game with Godzilla running through Super Mario and Contra, Rare Akuma.  Caught my interest again, but this time stayed around in the background of the community.  Wanted to see what other more "outside the box" characters would be done, like the Z2 Team or Diepod's interesting original character, possibly contribute where I can.

Only more recent I joined a Mugen forum, about a year ago.

You have Judgespear to blame thank for my presence. His videos were what first introduced me to Mugen (and fighters in general). Well, I knew about fighters and played them, it's just that Mugen videos essentially got me into them. Sadly, I only got Mugen a little over a year ago. I'd known about Mugen since about 2006 or 2007, but only around 2011 did I actually download it. So, yes, I'm a delayed YouTube noob. :P Still, I hold a good bit of respect for the guy to this day for introducing me to the wonderful world of Mugen.

Back in late 2007/early 2008 IIRC, I was on Youtube & I stumbled on someone's videos which were about Sailor Moon characters fighting each other. I was interested. I then searched it up on Google & there were images of Mugen Rosters that had chars from other games in it. Some time later, I was watching people showcasing their rosters on YT. I got even more interested.

A year & a half later, I downloaded Mugen on another computer (I couldn't do it on my Aunt's computer because she thinks downloading things from the internet had viruses in the Lol). I constantly downloaded random characters of my interest & put them in my roster.

Then after Christmas in 2009, where I got my laptop as a present, I downloaded Mugen in it & I also learned how to add Screenpacks. Then I did the same thing; download random chars.

So yeah, that's the story.

I started googling for DBZ games for pc in 2010 and I stumbled upon mugen, I didn't pay attention to that cause I didn't knew what it was. I just downloaded dbz games and played them and I liked them. Then in March 2012 I searched for more mugen games and stumbled upon mugen forums and that's where it all started.

That reminds me, was always hoping that the freedom Mugen had would allow interactive stages on scale as big as shown in the three popular MK vs SF Flash movies back then.  Didn't quite get that's not how it really works for Mugen at the time, but......still think it would be awesome to have stages like that.

A few years ago I remembered seeing a picture in a gaming mag back in middle school of a fighting game select screen with like 50 characters on it (an unfathomable amount at that point), and it I couldn't remember the name of it, so I googled something like "fighting games with lots of characters" to try and find it.  Found mugen instead.  Much happier.

Someone posted a mugen screenshot of Jotaro vs Wolverine on some forum I was at a really long time ago so I looked it up and snagged me some nolimitwinmugen.

I'm also under the impression that people keep neglecting data from the game, do you guys know how PotS made his original characters? He actually studied every single game he referenced, down to the core. Doing this properly requires understanding how the original system was made, not just winging it.

It happened back in 2006, when I first downloaded a fighting game (DBZ VS SF) from a website known as acid play. I had just gotten a computer during that time. so I was looking to put fun games on it. The computer was old, and it only had about 6-10GB at most, And was running MS dos so you can imagine how bad the computer was. When I first found the game, I didn't know how to get it started. I saw all the character names, sounds, ect. but I thought it was broken so I felt it alone for a couple weeks... So one night when I was bored, I just decided to go back an see if I could get it to work. I actually pressed the .EXE icon by mistake, then the screen went black for about a minute. I was freaking out meanwhile cause I thought I had broke the only computer I had. So as I got up to go get my brother to help, The screen showed up with Ken fighting gohan, GokuSSJ4 fighting Ryu, ect. I went from scared, to nostalgic!! So instead of getting my brother, I then just stayed and watched the intro. So when the select screen came up, I had to learn the buttons any many other stuff. Once I got all the basics down, I setup I keys, when to training mode, and started from their...!

7 years have past and I still play mugen, and I'm still inspired by others creations, and went on to creating my own (Bleach) characters thanks to the help of others..! :)

2 years ago or so,i was looking for Mortal Kombat fatalities on youtube.So i found Sub-Zero killing Popeye and that got me interested.I didnt know the games name back then but in 2011 i found another vid titled Mugen.Downloaded it,figured out some things on m own pretty fast(Like adding characters) and spent most of my free time watching mugen tutorials.Donwloaded like 100 guys from Mugencharacters.org and then i found some forums of mugen on the internet.
I was mostly lurking Mugenguild,MugenChina and MugenLair,so i decidet to join one.First i joined MugenLair,but then the site closed(I think its back on),so i registered to Mugenguild.

I guess I can tell my story again:

Back in the summer of 2006, me and my siblings were searching Youtube for Haruhi episodes (bleh!) when we stumbled upon a couple of MUGEN fights involving Yuki fighting random characters. My siblings lost interest quickly. But those videos were the start of my path on MUGEN!

I was playing MUGEN and visiting forums for a while, then Judgespear happened, then I joined Youtube proper, then the rest is history!

I guess you can thank (or blame, whatever you want to do) JudgeSpear for me getting involved with MUGEN. I saw him as a typical video game player at that time, and seeing him do well in MUGEN got me to thinking 'Why can't I do that?'

This, coupled with my love for the fighting game genre itself, kinda lead into what you see today.

I only scolded you after your 4th or 5th silly topic. =P

2000, someone mentioned DBZME and DBZ2057 (you would be amazed how many people joined mugen cos of that) From there to mugen4ever. And editing the default screenpack. And lots of lurking on TESTP.

No requesting oddly enough.

In a hardcore gamers magazine about fighting games and RPGs back in 2000 or 2001. There was a 2 pages article about Mugen and what it was about. I remember an image of Evil Ken VS Evil Ryu.
Checked it out, loved it.

I remember downloading some crappy Naruto compilation game many years ago (I didn't have Internet back then, so I downloaded it from my buddy's PC). Later, when I saw a pirate PC DVD disc with SNK vs Capcom 2007 game. I was amazed that there is a PC version of something like that (yeah, I still didn't have internet) so I bought it and saw familiar stuff with that naruto compilation.
And when I got internet I figured out what mugen is. But I remember there was time when I saw DVD's with mugen compilations for sale at shops lol.

I know Mugen when I join a PC Game club in 2001, I was flipping a booklet of CD cover and found some interesting screenshots such as Gouki from Street Fighter Alpha vs Shingo from King of Fighters fighting in Kof99 Raining Park Stage, Sagat from Street Fighter Alpha vs Joe from Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 in King of Fighters 96 Iori's Stage and a few more. I was amazed by the screenshots and thought it was another Capcom vs SNK Series so I borrow it and play. It was fun with about 36 characters from Street Fighters Series, King of Fighters Series, Garou Mark of the Wolves Series, Samurai Shodown Series, Marvel Series and a few unknown characters with 10 different stages from different fighting games. When I went to search it in the internet, I realize that it is Mugen where I can customize my own fighting game.

A few years back, after searching for Simpsons vs Family Guy, I found videos of Homer and Peter Griffin fighting.
I realized it was a game and then it grew from there.

I think it started when I was watching random Youtube videos, and I came across this weird video called "Metroid vs Hulk". I thought it was a flash animation at first, but then I slowly realized that it was actually a game called Mugen. I lost interest in it for a while, but I found some forum post referencing it about 1-2 years afterwards. I got myself Mugen and downloaded some characters from RandomSelect, and ended up downloading Mugen 100% Hardcore, which I deleted both to start over.
Normally, I'd put some sort of funny GIF here.  But I won't.

was actually looking up "mugen" from samurai champloo in google and just luckily stumbled some youtube vids of mugen and then later on the community which was obviously mfg first of course lol. almost everything mugen originates from this site ha.

Back in 2006, I was browsing Youtube for Tales of Symphonia videos. I ended up finding a Mugen match with ToS characters, but back then I passed it off as a simple flash animation. Found another Mugen fight with Mario Vs. Luigi several months later, and I got into watching Mugen fights. It wasn't until about a year later when I watched some of Judgespear's videos before I finally downloaded it.

1999!? Damnit!! Lots of great things happened in 1999. Too bad I didn't find out about Mugen then. My Dreamcast made up for that....

Googled it by mistake around 4-5 years ago.

I looked into it some and read the tutorials on youtube, but it was a real mindfuck back then so I gave up. About a week later I got bored. So I made a character with practically zero knowledge of MUGEN. From then on I just stuck with it and learned along the way.....I still consider reading the docs sometimes.

A 3 years ago I was searching a fighting videos on youtube,than I see how worm kills king kong,I was meaning that game is not exist,than I heard for mugen and start to use,than I tryed to program some characher,but I allready stoped becouse I don't have time for that...
I'm Making someting very fucked up >:)

I saw some Youtube videos of Mega Man X and Zero fighting against Mavericks that were not limited to Reploids, but rather consisted of totally random crap. This took place in MUGEN, where my other childhood heroes fought against said Mavericks as well.
