Just in case you are not aware, Hurricane Sandy was expected to hit the Northeastern United States within 24 hours.

Please be prepared. I do not want to lose any board members here.

Don't worry about me though, I am prepared.

We went through this in the city tons of times. Hopefully this is like the others: not very bad.

But we still have those morons who think a few lives and destroyed homes are worth the day off from work/school.

So far the only things that make it such a big deal much more than the average hurricane are:

A) It's in New York

And B) the cold front

Otherwise it's pretty much just a category 1 hurricane. And being a resident of the south, we've dealt with our share of those.

Still, hopefully nothing too bad will happen. Best of luck to those in the areas.

I think it is losing intensity since I'm speaking with some people from the city.

Still, I hope for the NY people for the best and still check the news for updates. If the cold front is reaching around, that can be determinant in weakening the hurricane, since hurricanes lose intensity with the cold water.

My area got a power outage the moment I woke up.  Turns out cable wires were ripped from the poles due to severe gusting.  About 6 hours the cables were all fixed and power was restored.  Thankfully, at least in my area, no one got injured, but the streets are a mess.

I had to keep a watch on my windows since the winds were too fierce that it may break.  As of now, the winds are slowly losing speed, things heading back to normal, for now.

Certain parts on NY got hit badly......

Last I heard it did downgrade....but it's still being called a "superstorm" due to it still packing a bit of a punch.

Because just saying it's a "tropical storm with a bigger punch" isn't scary enough.

Over here in north Jersey it's pretty bad. 50-80mph winds all day, rain held off due to the fact that the majority was behind it and on the south side of it. Power's flickered all evening, trees are down all over the place, transformers have been going out all over, it's pretty bad.

I like in Cumberland, Maryland ... I work at a Holiday Inn, and let me tell you it's been crazy having so many people for the electric companys coming in and out of town, luckily I like on one of the few streets in the area I live in that still have power, it's not as bad here as it is in NYC but it's pretty intense, especially if you read about how chem dumps is what resulted in this megastorm getting most of it's power, it's amazing what our goverment does, not trying to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but the proof is there ...

In spite of all of the panicking I was instructed to do, the storm seems to have passed without incident up here.  It's been windy as a motherfucker, but there's no damage to speak of in my area.  I suppose I got lucky.

You limit yourself so badly when you try to avoid variables. When you get over your fear of the "complexity" of variables, you will find yourself in a better place: A beautiful world where coding is actually fun.

If it's one thing I hate about the hurricane naming system, it's all the misogynistic comments that come along with it. And they're not merely jokes, they're accurate representations of what people actually think, say, and do on a daily basis.

Just give the fucking hurricanes numbers or something. Do we really have to genderize destructive storms that destroy lives?

Yeah, they've pretty much all had female names.

Would love to know the logic behind that. To the internet!

Edit: I am not paying attention. Apparently they come up with them and go in sequence

We're on the 5th name from the end at the moment. Next will be hurricane tony or something.

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it's not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.

If I remember correctly, they name storms rather than numbering them to avoid confusion if more than one storm is occurring at the same time.  They have set lists of storm names already chosen for each year that alternate between male and female names, going in alphabetical order.   So, it's not that they're trying to assign gender to the worst storms, it's just that the really bad ones in recent memory have all happened to fall on female names in the list.

In my country, names that are given to these are either for male or female, and yes, most tragic storms that hit badly are coincidentally named female. Wonder why? :?

Not all of the mega-destructive hurricanes have female names. I mean, Andrew, Floyd, Ike, Charley, those were majorly destructive and had male names.

I didn't say hurricanes are only named after females, I said I hate the misogynistic commentary that comes along with the gendered names. I don't see any reason why hurricanes need to be genderized. And one doesn't see the same type of comments for "male" storms as one sees for "female" storms.

Eh. How do you combat that then? They have legitimate reasons for naming them and not many US names out there are considered gender-neutral.
