Sega has recently announced a contest to create a mascot to represent their new Sega Raw show. They say that Sonic the Hedgehog can not be used because his perception has been ruined by fans.

“Hosting the show with Sonic the Hedgehog would have ruined it,” asserts Sega’s chief creative officer and host of Sega Raw Toshihiro Nagoshi, “I don’t want certain types of people watching the show. This show is meant for true Sega fans only, not Sonic the Hedgehog fans.”

Nagoshi is most well known for producing the Super Monkey Ball and Yakuza games. He speaks very fondly of his position saying, “I am blessed to have worked on such beloved Sega franchises. I just feel bad for those at Sonic Team although maybe a lot of them stay on for the privilege of working on Phantasy Star.”

“This new mascot will eventually replace Sonic the Hedgehog as Sega’s main mascot,” mentions Nagoshi, “The show is merely a test run for him or her. Granted, I’m sure anything we choose will be better than Sonic the Hedgehog. I don’t know why so many horrible people latched onto him and not Mario.”

“We do realize that we are probably going to receive a lot of terrible submissions from people who will submit something like name-goes-here the animal,” admits Nagoshi, “We’re looking for a needle in a haystack essentially. A needle that will not ruin Sega’s image from fans making disturbing fan work of it.”

When asked what Sega will do with Sonic the Hedgehog after he is retired as a mascot, Nagoshi replied, “Lock him up in the vault with Alex Kidd.”

I'd love it if people realize that SEGA does more than Sonic games, removing him as their mascot may help in this.

Someone mentioned on one of the sites that they should see about getting Hatsune Miku.  I don't know too much on the whole Vocaloid deal, but I thought Sega already owned Miku?  That or they have something to do with the whole MikuMikuDance thing...

Well, it would certainly make for a good new mascot....though not like that thing doesn't have its fair share of fans twisting it.

Anyways, this seems rather suspicious to believe....but if true, Sonic's been rather dead for some time, so probably for the better.  Though placing the blame on the fans when they're as much a part of the problem?  Really now.

SEGA makes the Project Diva games but that's pretty much it.

I don't think they can use her as a mascot since she's not their IP.

I doubt the interview is true. HOWEVER it wouldnt surprise me if it was a problem that sega had to deal with, its hard to sell toons for eight year olds when every google search for the name of your product invariably ends up in massive tons of porn fanfiction and adult fanart.  Sonic fetish art is kinda weirder than most other stuff and has been around for so long that the yield of your common google search becomes a minefield.
Add to that that he is the only protagonist from sega that they keep making games of, Nintendo has link, kirby, samus, and a ton more.


Add to that , that everything considered good for sonic is at least ten years old, and its kindof easier to make something new.
Nintendo managed to keep using the same flagship character for ages, and the same didnt happen to them because strange fetishists didnt grab the character and made it their symbol.
In an alternate universe you would have people wearing mario suits to sex conventions where they have weird sex with other men in mario suits while they all do shrooms.

Well Sonic has been lackluster for some time,but its Segas own damn fault,blaming fans is total bullshit,honestly I believe Sonic is an Icon in gaming and is just irreplaceable,Sonic will always be the face of Sega just like Mario is for Nintendo IMO

Shame.  And I'd suppose purchasing it would be quite out of the question.

Well, for this new mascot, I would have said to go with another popular, if not as popular as Sonic, IP of theirs, slowly ween Sonic off rather than "This is the new face of Sega, Sonic's dead to us".  But that's just me.

Nope. I grew up with the Genesis, so Sonic isn't going anywhere from Segas' mascot in my eyes.

My money's on the fact that Sonic gets retained, but I do think they need to start making good games for him soon.

Some people are skeptic about the translation both sites provide (skim over a dozen of SONIC! or MY CHILDHOOD! comments and you'll find them).

It's kinda hard to believe Sega is going to shitcan their most profitable IP just because the Deviant Art/Furaffinity furfags have been drawing lots and lots of Sonic porn over the years.

But then again it's Sega, the only thing they're good at is sabotaging themselves.

Yeah, I was kinda doubtful reading that article.

It all seems silly to me that Sega would just quit on it's most popular IP, especially seeing as it's games have started getting better (Ex. Colours, Generations, All Stars Racing Transformed, etc.).

Seriously, this isn't a complaint. Most search filters are automatically turned on. The only way a kid would see adult fanart is if someone either turned off the filter or deliberately went looking for these types of images.

Wow. And here I thought I've been actually noticed lol.

But anyways, I've never actually been a sonic fan, so finding ideas for a new mascot wouldn't phase me, but i'd think that it would be dumb. Though, making a second mascot besides sonic would be cool. Maybe a new fighter to rival Ryu. The VF series was a cool 3D fighter imo. Seeing another one would be cool.

I dunno, but I have a theory that Sonic has small jets on his body that can squirt out hydrogen peroxide, acting as a primitive biological thruster, which allows him to adjust his attitude while in space or other high altitude situations. It is my theory that the biggest jets are located in his hands and feet, covered by his gloves and shoes, respectively. I am going to try and research this by Googling "Sonic naked close up", so I can get a close look at the uncovered hand and feet. Wish me luck.
