you know how it is.

Only games that i have played.

*ahem*

The "this will take really fucking long" award
Winner: Elder scrolls V: Skyrim

Games are aften said to be "electronic crack" and if thats true then Skyrim is the super strong stuff only californians do. With a massive, detailed world that has more sidequests then pixels, skyrim is going to be asborbing the time and life of many gamers for years to come. Sure the combat and main missions suck, but who cares when you can just go around picking flowers for 5 hours and not even notice the time fly?!

the "best gunwank" award
Winner: RAGE

Many shooters came out this year and most of them ended up being either disappointing sequals or multiplayer based borefests. From within all this the shooter veteran ID software managed to create rage. A game that really does not do anything new but manages to create a good 15-20 hour package that not only looks absolutely amazing but has a great deal of combat and gameplay variety. Something that shooters seem to have forgotten totally as of late.

the "iiiiiiiit's blackandyellowblackandyellowblackandyellow"
Winner: Deus ex human revolution

The original deus ex is often hailed as "the best game ever". I myself have never played it but after playing human revolution i gotta say my hopes are pretty high. Human revolution tackels deep philosophical issues and at the same time delivers one of the best action rpg experiences on the current gaming generation. It certainly has some weird issues, but everything is forgiven when you realize you just spent ten hours looking around the first HUB area and loving every minute of it.

the "best LSD" award
Winner: E.Y.E divine cybermancy

This game is basicly deus ex + saints row + passion of the christ.

Its fucking awesome, only ten euros or so on steam, get it now.

the "best vroom vroom" award
Winner: Driver: san fransisco

Having played some of the old driver games (and hating them) back when i was younger, i was not really looking forward to the new game. What it ended up being was a really solid arcady, sandbox driving game with one good gimmic that manages to carry the whole thing. It's not a masterpiece or anything but there are certainly worse ways to spend an afternoon.

the "best game with a big sexy black man narrating the whole thing" award
Winner: Bastion

Bastion is not only an extremely fun hack and slash game but its also the most insteresting story focused game i have played for a long time. Bastion is like that one fairy tale you always made your dad read to you before bedtime. Expect that bastion is better because your dad is not a big sexy black man (i think). You have absolutely no excuse to not get this game. it's an indie masterpiece.

the "best game" award
Winner: Portal 2

Portal was the best game ever. Portal 2 is one of the best games ever. Valve have not only created a great sequal, but also single handedly one of the most satisfying gaming experiences ever made. Portal 2 combines brilliant puzzle gameplay with one of the best game scripts ever to scathe my ears. The game oozes with humor and character that is deliverd with absolutely perfect voice actors. The levels, visuals, music and scenarios go together to create an absolute electronic entertainment masterpiece. And the seperate co-op story is the best way to make friends in history of everything. I love this game forever and you should too.

Well i hope you enjoyed this little award ceremony. Give out your thoughts and share your own favorites of the year. The wine and cookies are over there.

bye

Oh i almost forgot

the "game that should never have come out" award
Winner: Duke Nukem forever

Get out of here duke.

Yeah, that works.

No witty quotes though.

Agreed. I'm surprised someone else has even played Rage! Great game even if it went to hyper-drive and ended too fast in the last third of the game (which is the only thing that actually disappointed me about it). Best shooter I played this past year in purely in terms of fun, which is why I get games. I mean it's got John Goodman in it... fucking awesome!

Duke Nukem was seriously below expectations and... oh wait, nobody was expecting anything from this game, after taking 12 years to complete. My mistake. I'm still angry because of the fact that it says the Power Armor system from Halo is bad (and I agree, I don't like how it works), yet he uses that same system he critizises plus the only two weapons system, which makes him even more similar to Halo (though you can use four after a certain patch if you want, but it's an optional choice). I still facepalm when I go through that part of the game. The game is full of itself, that's an obvious fact.

Apart from that, the other worst game of this year, as I said in the "stopped playing" thread is MindHack. It's even worse than Duke Nukem, and possibly because you were kind of expecting it to be a good game (at least me after watching some trailers), though even if we weren't expecting it to be good it's just impossible to enjoy. And you know a game is really bad when IGN, who usually boosts the game's rating even when they don't deserve it, gives it a 4/10 and marks it as bad.

I know, but this part is the one that irritates me the most. That, and how the game was just full of itself (remember the "Yes, but after twelve fucking years it should be" comment Duke said, about how good the game is?).

No I disagree. I can't think of anything fucking the game itself up more than the shitty weapon and health system. Easy boss mechanics, and the fact level layout is the same as just about any modern shooter (A -> B = Done.), and the fact he had a piss poor attitude when his stupid twins died, but the health and weapon limit were what pushed this game to the near unplayable territory. Once I got around those I found a decent shooter and had plenty of fun playing through certain areas of the game, with the crude humor and woman objectification that I and anyone else should have expected from a Duke Nukem game(that was never actually finished).

When Gearbox does their next Duke Nukem title like they said they were going to do, all they'd need to do for the most part part is take the formula more to what Duke3D had back in the day and people would love it. No weapon dropping, go back to health kits and body armor, and remove level linearity.

The health bar also depletes too fast, and unfortunately, there are some parts of the game in which you receive missiles from everywhere and there's no place to cover to recover it. Stupid "ego" system, which is contradictory because you aren't supposed to recover ego by hiding, for God's sake.

The only thing I particulary liked were the "shrunk Duke" parts. Some were quite interesting.

People's problems with DNF are really little and small problems that only look at small changes that were made out of convenience for the player, and people fail to look at the game as a whole, in which case DNF is an average game that you have can have alot of fun with in small doses. It is far from the worst FPS of 2011, that belongs to Conduit 2. And I don't hear anyone complaining about 007, which did the same exact thing DNF did but even worse.

  • Unique, just like everyone else
As a Christmas present?  Then yeah, DNF is worth a run.  Cazaki's basically got the gist of it.  It's pretty mediocre, and Duke isn't as funny as he could be, but it's worth the time, and, hey, tits.

My only complaints were the grenades were a bit too useful, and most of the guns are garbage.  Shotgun, Ripper/Rocket Launcher.  That's literally all you need.

The Ripper is pretty trashy, too. Spent more ammo than actually time killing. On top of that the Railgun does wonders on Octabrains, especially during the underwater segment.

While there's qualms to be had with Duke, I still get some enjoyment from it as a novelty. Like a what-if scenario that actually turned out, for better or worse. The platforming areas were also quite good. Never tried the multiplayer, nor do I have an interest to lol.
Sometimes you just need a little less gun.

  • Die you son of a bitch
my main issue with duke was single player level design. it felt repetitive and dry, not nearly as challenging as duke 3d, which had good level design.

I did like the personality of duke (though it felt lame at times, other ties it was funny and traditional duke) and interaction for ego boosting was a neat addition.

The biggest issue was it got overhyped because it was FINALLY getting released

it was more of feel good casual game that you dont play seriously. good for a playthrough or two. mainly there with its humor as the primary entertainment value, but there are exceptions if this humor is not what you enjoy

as for the rest of the list i could easily agree with, the LSD award made me laugh

Sorry, but the Ripper is worthless. You spend 1/3 of the total ammo, which is 200, just to kill one enemy, and it takes too much time, unfortunately. And it only works for the pigs. The other enemies either teleport/move too much or won't die unless you spend more than that. Best weapons so far:

- Shotgun: kills anything in 1-3 shots if they eat all the bullets. You want one with you all the time, I swear.

- Devastator: Personally, I doubted between this one and the rocket launcher. Rocket Launcher is great for its accuracy, and I think it does more damage per shot, but Devastator is also great to kill multiple enemies. If only the Rocket Launcher didn't have a limit of only 5 rockets. It's worth nothing that you find the Rocket Launcher more than Devastator, I usually find an ammo box before I run out of bullets for the Devastator, and the Devastator has 69 bullets, so screw the other one.

- Sniper rifle: ...or whatever that laser thing is called. Same as shotgun, except is a long-ranged weapon. If only it didn't have that limit of 12 bullets, and if only you could find it more often.

So yeah, you basically have one slot to put any bad weapon you want, if you have selected the 4 weapons option (if you don't, just grab the shotgun). I would put Freeze Ray if it wasn't because of its shitty misleading short range. Yeah, executing an enemy gives you full ego, but heck, if I go and do that, after the execution ends I will probably lose all the health again, since I have to be close (so yeah, only works in small areas). Ripper does poor damage, pistol goes for the same as Ripper, Shrink weapon (or rather, its bullets) suck (they're slow and really innacurate) and there's few ammo for them. Rocket Launcher for that last reason too.

See? You can see how stupid this works. Because they wanted to make it similar to Halo even though they said they don't like its system, the majority of weapons do not have enough bullets to be useful. And for the ones that you have them, only the shotgun is worth using. And there's also the problem that few weapons have a max ammunition superior than 20. This limit really affects all weapons.

Here's my list of shit

Game Most Likely To Make ArellonX Jizz in his Pants
Winner:Pokemon Black and White

It's based on New York, Route 4 is a barren wasteland that all but screams ground zero (it got hit by a meteor in this game tho), and the Pokemon on said meteor (Kyurem) originally had measurements of 9'11".

Worst Song to Dance to in a Rhythm Game
Winner: This is Halloween in Just Dance 3

I love Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. I love Rhythm games. The routine in this game made both worse for me.

Game My Coworker Bitched About The Most
Winner: Ulimate Marvel VS Capcom 3

"Dude, I feel like I paid $50 to play an unfinished game and now they want to charge me again! And Megaman isn't in it! Fuck Capcom! And when are you gonna versus me on Call of Duty?!"

Worst Community Effort Wasted Since Wikipedia
Winner: Team Fortress 2

Ever since the Mann-conomy Update, the game has just been too bloated with weapons that aren't bug-tested and hats that do nothing but crash maps, but this year took the cake with a plethora of items that don't even follow the original's theme!

Best Game of 2011
Winner: Alterniabound

With its excellent spriting, wonderful writing, and THE BEST MUSIC OF ALL TIME*, Alterniabound captured my heart and soul and made me sympathize with the trolls in Homestuck even more so. So have a H3H3H3 and a ::::) on me, Hussie, because thii2 2iide project of yours wAS, uHHHHH, nothing short of a mOtHeRfUcKiNg MiRaClE.

That's not a characteristic directly attributed to Halo, and the Shotgun isn't even Halo's best weapon as far as the whole franchise goes because every weapon is generally balanced out to have no right weapon. On top of that, it's STILL a really nitpicky issue, it doesn't make Duke the worse FPS of 2011 like oh-so-many people say it is, it's a CASUAL game that you play and dick around with and have fun. The issues you pointed out won't even be a problem for guys who just sit around and play
