Michael Jai White as Jax? Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade? Baraka and Reptile as homicidal maniacs? This footage from what looks to be the next Mortal Kombat game or movie trailer is brutal, disgusting, and perfect.

Reader Kev directed us to this video, featuring a realistic new take on the Mortal Kombat franchise that has more in common with movies like suspense and horror films like Seven and Saw than anything resembling the campy video game to film adaptations we've seen in the past.

Last we heard, Warner Bros. was looking to reboot the film franchise. If this is the fruit of that effort, we approve wholeheartedly.

More likely this could be a live-action trailer for the next game. Either way, we approve.

Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has indicated that the next game in the series would be shooting for an M rating. "People want an M-rated MK....dammit we will give them an M-rated MK." This would surely do the trick.

This is way too much star power for a fan project. We're digging around for more information. Considering the timing of this trailer, however, we expect we might hear more as E3 quickly approaches.

Now, help us figure out who all is appearing in this clip.

In a word?  Ew.

What the hell have they done with my childhood?  There's nothing Mortal Kombat about this.  It looks entertaining, a brilliant action movie, and if the Cage / Baraka fight sets the standard for the martial arts, bring it the hell on, but this isn't Mortal Kombat.  Reptile is a Zaterran, not a psycho with harlequin's.  Baraka is a Tarkatan, not a plastic surgeon with Origins Deadpool blades.  About the only thing they got right was a dead Cage.  I was happy with my campy martial arts emperor from another dimension story, why'd they replace it with this shock-value real world crap?  I bloody well hope the game isn't like this...

The movie actually looks like it will be good.
Only problem is, this dosen't follow the story of the original Mortal Kombat.
But, I do like the new storyline they made.

And I lol'ed at Baraka doing a suplex. I swear the guy wasn't a grappler  :S
Kinda strange but I woke up today and her hand was on my ass cheek
I won't suspect anything though I'll take it she was sleeping and didn't notice

it can be that i made the thread in the wrong forumsection. a lot people think its not a promo for a new MK Movie but for the next Mk Game which was hinted to be a reboot of the series.  E3 will tell more i guess.

Yeah i was thinking about that, it does look like a series reboot, and if it is, its a good one, the gritty pseudo urban style would make it a more interesting world than the overly fantastic mortal kombat universe.

Boon had talked about how he was done with the continuity of the series but was gonna keep using subzero and scorpion, this looks like it.

I can't properly dictate how angry this sentence makes me.  All MK had over its competition was the overly fantastic universe, and it's being turned into another generic urban brawler.  Now it feels less like MK than it does one of the crappy homebrew spoofs of MK.

I like this and I can't see it being an ad for a game....that wouldn't make any sense unless they're willing to plunk down more money than it's worth to use the likeness of all those actors.

There's no real info about this though so....it looks real good though. It reminds me of Se7en.
I didn't know Baraka was Jamaican.

Yes!

I'm OK with this.

This is bullsh*t

And this p*sses me the F@ck off...STOP KILLING JONNY!

I think this is a pumped up promo for a new MK game, if not, then the movie will suck, why? Ryan is pushing 40, she's not fighting a cold, let alone doing in a Martel Arts movie, she's not been doing much as of late, she'd do a game promo.

Any fight scene with her, will be a double or lame, because she's a pampered, ageing  Hollywood starlet.

Another cash-grab B-list flick, hyped up as A-list.

Edit: in addition, stealing Killer Crock's origin story for Reptile was pathetic. How will they explain Raiden? Give a taser?

So it's The Dark Knight meets Mortal Kombat... I fucking want. I found it amusing that Scorpion is gonna be the protagonist, but really, he's far more iconic than Liu Kang. Sub-zero looked kinda odd.

  • Fuck You.
The inclusion of the whole Black Dragon gang would be dynamite considering Kano and Sonya/Jax's history.

So this is what I see:

Very few supernatural elements - (Scorpion is still a zombie, that's it, for now)

Urbanized versions of the more fantastical characters - (Reptile's a harlequin victim instead of a Zaterran, Baraka is an...evil...surgeon...:gonkgoi: instead of a Tarkatan mutant. Sub-Zero looks like he will be some type of prosthetic kinda guy on a cold- machine.)

Michael Jai White as Fucking Jax (yessir).

looks good. but then again, they can only go up since they've hit past rock bottom.
i cant count the reasons i should stay

one by one they all just fade away...

Okay, so... Mortal Kombat. It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film. [...] I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was. And I'm not sure how you can contact WB to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful...! ;-)

Jerry Ryan needed the work. Not to may people are hiring her after that crap with her stalker. 42 years old with two kids, hasn't been in a movie since 2003's "Down With Love" (It bombed, Badly) and No Martel Arts Experience At All. No way they'd pick her to be Sonya.

Okay, so... Mortal Kombat. It's not a game trailer.
THANK GOD.

cast cast cast
Tony Jaa gave up acting; he's a real life Buddhist monk now.  Besides, as far as I'm concerned, anyone but Robin Shou for Liu Kang is a downgrade.  Whoever is chosen to play Kitana must also play Mileena, no way around that.  They're supposed to be identical twins (aside from Mileena's mouth), and the fact this wasn't even alluded to in Annihilation pissed me off immensely.  For Kano, I'd rather see Charles Mesure, the "British" guy with the Aussie accent in V, seems perfect.  Sonya, I'm not sure about Tori; there are plenty of cool blondes out there for the role, namely Amber Heard (surprisingly physical cameo in Zombieland) or even Kirsten Bell, especially if the rumors of an Assassins' Creed movie are to be believed (she'll either have martial arts experience or be soon to get it).

Quote
Mileena was brought to life by Shang Tsung using Tarkatan race's physiology to be a clone of Edenian Princess Kitana for the evil Emperor Shao Kahn. Mileena looks just like Kitana when her mask is on (especially since Kitana often also wears a mask), but when it is off, her true, flawed visage is exposed. She despises Kitana, and feels that it is her own right to rule Edenia as princess in her place. Her fondest wish is to kill her "sister", and claim her existence for her own. Something of an opportunist, Mileena will make use of any chance to seize power that comes within her grasp.

no matter what you say... this video is awesome... a cool twist to the old story

probably no one of use will want to see a movie knowing all the things are going to happen... I like the clip, a more urbanized MK, less fantastic and still seems cool...

no realms? who say that?

no ninja suits... not so far, but they could be used... (think as Ryu and Ken on SF)... or like the first MK movie when Shant Tsung assassins used the ninja suits...

I hope this ends up leading to an actual MK film. I guess I have the same complaints as everyone else, in addition to liking what everyone else seems to like.

So basically, looks cool..needs a bit more supernatural stuff going on though, and at least a taste of that whole typical Kung-Fu theme that Mortal Kombat is known for.

Oh my god, Casper Van Dean is still alive?

No nothing wrong with Dracula 2000. But for those who don't know, it was a re-envisioning of Dracula but based on the original book. Took place in modern times after some ass hats free dracula, and then the books story line repeats to the point where he finds himself 3 new brides and even turns the girl leads girl friend "Lucy" (Same name as the book) into a vampire after fucking the hell out of her.

Then the movie goes on to tell the real tale of Dracula's origins.

So if someone was going to reinvent something, that guy has pretty good experience.

Right, I'm a little reassured.

Quote
Now like I said, because I am such a fan of the Mortal Kombat series, I know there’s a lot of concern about the mysticism and the special powers and all that kind of stuff.  Well, like I said, this is really designed — the short so far is really designed like a prologue to the movie. Now, in a movie version, I am going to have that mysticism there, but it has to be done in a very tasteful way.  I wouldn’t like it too campy or too cheesy.  I know this is a weird analogy, but it’s the best one I can think of right now.  It’s kind of like when in Harry Potter, there’s two universes that coexist with each other.  There’s the real world, and then you get on the train and then you go to Hogwart’s, and that’s where all the magic is.  It was actually kind of similar in the first Mortal Kombat, too.
So he doesn't want to abandon the supernatural side of it?  Quite a relief to hear.

Quote
...And I think Jax is such a real character.  I would love to see how he got his metal arms.  I thought that was great.  Sonya’s also such a classic character.  Everyone knows Sonya.  I did want to utilize the most iconic characters and not get too carried away with the over the top nature that you can get away with in video games, but not necessarily in cinema.  So I probably wouldn’t have people like Cyrax.  I would have people like Kabal.  But not Cyrax. Stryker is another interesting character.  I would definitely like to explore Kitana and Kung Lao.
Kitana and Kung Lao?  Kitana implying that Mileena will be there too?  Now you can sign me up.

for the ninjas, well just think as them as Shant Tsung killers using ninja suits for combats or recognition...

well, maybe a better analogy would be like the spiderwebs, in the movie he send them from his hand, in old comics it was helped by an artifact...

I think the web analogy made more sense.... but it was to help the audience relate more with peter instead of him being super smart (which kinda took away from his character.....)

I am glad its not going to lose the magic stuff, and keeping it in "not overly cheesy" way is good, I really liked the first MK Movie myself, I hated the second one, but the first I didnt think was bad. one of the better Video game based movies

totally agree, first one is cool, even if somethings now looks stupid, like Johnny Cage walking alone in a forest, then he is on "hell" fighting scorpion and then back ith his friends xD

but anyways, the concpt was pretty good...

about this short film, isn't bad, fighting coreagraphy, camera angles, production and script are solid IMO, not totally accurate to the source, but a cool revamp

Don't use the source as an excuse of a bad movie
