Older Must Play Games

So I'm pretty bored and empty as of late so I want to request games that you all consider to be essential to be called a gamer, but nothing too obvious like Sonic or Mario, just older stuff that isn't too recognized today by the general public.

Now I don't want stuff that's above 5th generation because I can't emulate it well and frankly I don't enjoy stuff past that for the most part. I'm asking for games below that. One more exception, no RPGs for now, too long for me currently and I want to have some variety as I'm not too fond of putting so much into one single game at the time.

Try Plok, it's not essential to be called a gamer but it's definitely something new to the table. It's for the SNES. Has good music and good gameplay, but it gets hard.

Oh speaking of old arcade games, try Reactor, that game kicked ass, i'm pretty sure MAME supports it

I'm also under the impression that people keep neglecting data from the game, do you guys know how PotS made his original characters? He actually studied every single game he referenced, down to the core. Doing this properly requires understanding how the original system was made, not just winging it.

The Great Circus Mystery: Starring Micky and Minnie (Genesis)
Risky Woods (Genesis, forgettable game, but still unique)
Bomberman 94 (SFamicon)
Aladdin (Gamegear)
Bust-a-Move 2 (ARC and some ports, doesn't matter what)
Power Rangers: The Movie (Genesis)
Mortal Kombat 2

Gameplay AND Great Music:
Kirby 3 (SNES)
Blaster Master (NES)

Do psx games count?Since i have a crappy PC and i can emulate em.
-Firebugs (A really cool racing game,which is based off Rollcage,another cool racing game which you should check)
-Tobal 2(Fighting game + RPG + Gathering new characters by capturing them a la Pokemon style + over 100 playable fighters = Yes Please)
-Bushido Blade(A fighting game where usually all characters have one hit kills,they were going for realism i guess,its pretty awesome)
-Battle Arena Toshinden?
-Survival Arts,maybe?
-The original Guilty Gear?
-The House of The Dead. Nuff .Said.

I never touched an SNES in my life,but i remember i enjoyed Legend of Kage on my bootleg when i was a kid.

Actually the first Battletoads on nes will be challenging even with quick saves on emulator. I was able to complete Battletoads on Sega console (without quick saves or cheats of course) and was not able to do so on NES emulator with quicksaves (prefinal level is hell). So, nes version is much harder, although NES and Genesis versions are actually the same game.

This is my favorite samurai game so far, speaking of psx, I highly encourage to try ~~Lunar series and specially Threads of fate.~~ both rpg sorry, try Tenchu 2 lol.

I did play Tenchu when i was 5 or so,and it took me a lot of time to find out the name of that game.
It was fairly complicated for me then,since i couldnt even pass the first boss(That bandit guy)

Dune 2 (Genesis / SNES)
Seiken Densetsu 2 / Secret of Mana (SNES)
Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES emulator)
Donald in Maui Mallard (Genesis or SNES)
Final Fantasy X (PS2)
Torchlight (a great Diablo clone, from 2009)
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 (from 2002) - still one of the best NfS parts
and most of all: Heroes of Might and Magic 3

That game is still pretty challenging with Game Genie codes as some levels use checkpoints instead of the standard beat em up deaths. Most of it comes down to memorization in the end as a lot of the problems with that game come with instant death traps.

I can't say I enjoy beat em ups that combine platforming as well, I just don't think the control scheme works well for it. The only Battletoads game I like is Super Battletoads mainly for the violence and the fact that you don't have to be a sadistic fuck to enjoy it.
