So I was watching this recent thread on GAF about the scariest videogames people have ever played, and I found some interesting games I have never heard of. Also most people seem to agree that Amnesia is the scariest horror game ever made so far.

I recently have been playing Silent Hill 2 which has been sitting in my hard drive for a while, and so far I'm enjoying it (a.k.a. scared as shit).

So what do you guys think? Which games do you think are the scariest? Also post some moments which you thought were the scariest. :twisted:

i was scared back in 1996 ..RE 1..16 years old and the dogs  jumped trough the window...that was just something new for me in a video game and it was damn unexpected. Silent Hill I was scary for me as well, mostly because the atmosphere and noises.

Scariest videogames i have ever played? Earth Defense Force 2 ...these giant spiders and ants make me yell.

Alien Resurection (I think) FPS on Saturn was pretty scary for me.

Alien Trilogy is the game you meant


a damn pixelation hell on both the saturn and ps1 but yes it was fun and sometimes a bit scary...loved the motion tracker and very dark atmosphere

Yeah, it's this one. Thanks for correcting me. God I hated it with the scary Aliens (I was young at the time).

About Resident Evil, I remember having a moment with a friend, we would hear a zombie walking, with the camera facing us, Jill looking towards us. The zombie should have came from outside of the screen, but no way to know when, and we didn't want to walk forward, scared of getting bitten during the camera angle change. So we waited... and we waited ... until we realized 5 minutes later this "walking noise" was my alarm clock ticking, which I put right on top of the television. ;P

I've actually never played Fatal Frame II and III but I watch others play them. The last time I watched my brother play FFIII, two random aggressive ghosts came out of nowhere. I felt like I was going to have  heart attack.

The Thing is quite scary. It's more of the uncertainty of having one of your friendly NPC allies go all RARWWBLARGGHHHNOMNOMNOM in your face all of a sudden.

Thief 1 - Return to the Haunted Catheral
Thief 3 - The Asylum

Both are very well designed levels that force you to go everywhere of the level in order to beat it. And are all creepy.

Not really in to horror games but I'd say Eternal Darkness on the gamecube, when I was fighting a boss and it said my controller was unplugged I was scared shitless, and when you'd become insane and insects would crawl all over your screen...now that I think about it that game was awesome!!

Dead Space 1 and 2  - both had some pretty intense moments

Doom 3 - I thought this had some jump out moments in the beginning of the game

Resident Evil - The dog through the window made me jump the first time I played it lol

Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut.

HL1 mod. Everything's dark as shit, monsters are scary as fuck (they twitch incessantly, move insanely fast and dish some hard damage) and the sounds certainly DON'T help. Never got past the first levels because I was NOPEing so hard.

If you ever want to shit your pants, get this game and play it. Do it at night with lights off and headphones on if you don't want to sleep or maybe even live.

Going with those who said Alien Trilogy. I'd have a fucking heart attack if I was attacked from behind, which was failrly often because they didn't have proper foot steps in the game.

alien trilogy isn't too scary like Alien "ill make you have heart attacks even on death" vs predator 1 and 2

playing that game as marine is a freakin nightmare, i hope that Colonial marines follows both styles from trilogy and AvP

IMO, the best scary games are the ones that keep you constantly in tension, not just doing suddenly short burst scary moments that happens once in a while, aka Doom 3 by putting a demon behind the door, that jumped to your face the moment you opened it. I never found Doom 3 scary. Same goes with Dead Space. Maybe because the moment I found something scary I just started shooting it until I was scared of what remained of the body.

Btw, here are the games I think are the scariest.

- Silent Hill 2 is a great game, and had some moments, specially the ones related with Pyramid Head, that truly made me scared.

- Fatal Frame 1-3 has some great moments too, specially when you lose the camera. Taking away your only weapon and making you run away is possibly one of the best ways to scare you, specially if the ghosts can instantly kill you.

- Penumbra 2 and Amnesia are another good examples. Having to constantly hide in the dark while something is near you that can easily kill you really terrifies me.

- First FEAR game had some really good scary moments. Everytime Alma appeared, which occured often, it always managed to scare me. Sequels weren't as good as the first one in that aspect IMO.

- Condemned games. Why is nobody mentioning them? The place full of manekins made me quit the game temporally since I reached my limit of seeing scary things.

Personally, the more hindered you are towards the enemies (few or no weapons, weak character that can only take 1-2 hits) the best they are at putting you in a constant state of fear.

I don't know, I never found Resident Evil games to be scary, honestly. First time I got attacked by a zombi that was laying on the ground, it scared me. After the second time, it was just repetitive.

I wouldn't consider that a infinite since you have to make your opponent bounce of the wall and if you do it on the wrong side of the stage the stage interaction would activate.

This reminds me of that time mechy told me Dead Space is an action game. It was scary fast and SHOOTY because you're running for your life, knowing that all odds are against you/

In the same fashion, the original scare appeal of the Resident Evil doesn't rely on things being actually OMG SCARY but more like you're trying to survive with 3 bullets and TANK Controls. It's nerve wracking. Like real life would be if there was a serial killer running behind you and you were naked running over river rocks.

This reminds me..i found Clock Tower on the ps1 damn scary sometimes

You are more or less helpless in the game and that damn scissorman is always after you, the player is constantly fleeing.

Ass it is, but still, it made you feel horribly helpless. In that sense it succeeded.

Back when it was released it was unfathomable at least for me as to why would they make such a horrible game, as in, your chances to win or make it out alive are slim to none at every turn.

beside Another World / Out of this World it was the first game for me where the protagonist have no weapons all the time but have to flee and face an enemy who can kill you with one touch , its a interesting gameplay design and yes, scarier than any survival horror games where you have all kinds of weapons tod efend yourself

I do understand why people find dead space and resident evil scary, but it does just not work for me. DS is way too cartoony with the way it handles the violence and resident evil is shit... yadda yadda.

System shock 2 still takes the cake for me. It's odd how a game that focuses so much on being an action RPG manages to come off so terrifying. I guess its all in the atmosphere...

Also i think that a great horror game needs to do a bit more then just make the player helpless. I feel that it also needs to make the monsters "terrifying" in a very basic sense of the word. The kind that you dont even want too see, much less go near. The character design + plus stuff like voicework can make a huge impact.

A japanese game, Corpse Party. OH... GOD... You have to watch it in Youtube. Or rather, play it. It's supposed to be available in English as a PSP game. It's an adventure game, btw.

Had the best time with this when I had my girlfriend play that part and she has some hilarious reaction to jump scares like that. Played it off really cool too.

Me: Hey I'll be right back gonna grab a drink can you grab the wires and first aid for me?

Me: Nah see(picks up one of the items that doesn't cause it to break out).
Her: Well...alright.

Oh yeah, F.E.A.R 2 demo. Man, I swear, I was scared to finish that demo. It interested me, but I had to go eat before I could finish the demo. I still regret not finishing it.

Amnesia, F.E.A.R, Doom 3, Afraid of Monsters (HL1 mod), System Shock 2, Dead Space 1, Half-Life 2 Ravenholm level

Resident Evil 1-3 scared the shit out of me when I was young but it's not scary now at all. Resident Evil 4 had a few scares with the Regenerators. Resident Evil 5 is laughable.

Yeah I was caught off guard of the dog jumping out of the window too.

Can I add the Splatterhouse series? The first one was gross and the third made me feel like shit when I failed. There is nothing more traumatizing to know that the death of your wife and kid was YOUR FAULT.

Also want to add Chakan the forever man. The game was creepy to play in the dark and I thought it was hilarious when the ending had a hourglass for 7 mins. The devs didn't even think anyone could beat it.

We're talking about scary games, not gore games. Splatterhouse isn't scary at all. And for what I'm seeing in Youtube, Chakan doesn't seem to be scary at all.

Try Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, a very interesting FPS survival horror based on "The shadow over Innsmouth" book by H.P. Lovecraft, of all the FPS i have played, this one is the best on therms of no using HUD and having a nice amount of mental effects affecting your vision while you play (sanity loss oriented).

I'm also under the impression that people keep neglecting data from the game, do you guys know how PotS made his original characters? He actually studied every single game he referenced, down to the core. Doing this properly requires understanding how the original system was made, not just winging it.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

On the subject of Doom 3...it's more creepy than scary, to be honest. The game tries hard to build an atmosphere of terror in the starting levels with lights going off and jump scares, but eventually stops giving a shit until you reach Hell.

Nah, the first half of Resident Evil 3 takes place before 2, on the 28th (2 takes place on the 29th or 30th, I forget which). Then Jill gets infected and is out of it until October 1st.

I've always been interested in that game, but never found one physical copy when my Gamecube still worked. Guess I'll have to buy a wii and a used copy of that game one of these days, since getting a computer that can run Dolphin at a decent speed would be far more expensive.

On topic: Resident Evil 2 used to pretty scary...when I was 11.

The game over scenes were fricking scary back in the day.

Nowadays the only mileage they get is all the tired "lol claire zombie rape" jokes.

I'm a total pussy when it comes to scary stuff... I can't even watch horror movies... I know they're fake and stuff, but being in constant tension together with seeing someone get murdered in the most horrible way possible literally makes me sick to my stomach... can't help it, I feel sick and then depressed for the next week... I'm also the type that sees someone get stabbed in their hand and hold my own hand for the next hour, feeling something's not right with it.

Games, however, are a different thing. They still scare me, but they don't affect me the same way (the violence, I mean). Personally, I think the scariest games are the ones where you're completely helpless or constantly at tension... This is my list:

- Resident Evil 3: F***ing Nemesis just made this game completely dreadful to play (and yet still fun)... I see those people beating the game with nothing but the knife and I feel like a pathetic little person (They even face Nemesis every time without escaping). I love the first two RE games, but they just don't scare you the same way the second time because the surprise is gone.

- Haunting Grounds: Can't believe no one mentioned this game. It's kind of like RE3, but with nothing but Nemesis characters (no normal enemies, though... although lots of death traps).

Doom 64. The best of all previous Doom with better graphics and more screams. Scariest as hell, especially with the obscure stages and-- OMG A MONSTER!! *screaming when I got back of screen*

Is it the same number of stabs during EVERY encounter? Or do they get progressively higher and higher?

Honestly, I have no idea. I'm too busy running the eff away from him half the time and any RE player with common sense will toss that stupid knife in the box unless you're playing Code Veronica.

for me is
Fatal Frame 3 the opening scene where everything is sephia and rather pixelated. creepy.
and Silent Hill on PS its pixelated fog, and screeching sound, and how the building decomposed into rotten chicken wire mess, in later versions I already know what to expect but then it was the first time
