Final Fantasy XII ..... perfect score? what?

That says it all. Perfect ratings are becoming far to leniently handed out as time progresses
Thought I'd play this game if I could.

Well worth it.  By no means perfect, but it's one of my favourite FFs.

he other titles scoring 40 on Famitsu's 40 scale are: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998), Soulcalibur (1999), Vagrant Story (2000), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2003), Nintendogs (2005), Final Fantasy XII (2006), Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008), Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008) and 428 (2008).
Some choices are very questionable for perfect review (Nintendogs, Brawl) It's been well known that some developers buy scores from Famitsu, but hey, at least they have good taste.
Vagrant Story FUCK YEAH.

It's a sound novel, not a visual novel. Also it is a spiritual sequel to the legendary Chunsoft sound novel “machi”.

I wonder how much Famitsu got paid for this review.

Maybe Microsoft thinks that it would be suspicious if all of their games/published games would get a perfect score.

If money was the only thing taken in account, then every Microsoft game would get a perfect score, which isn't the case.

Sarcasm was uncalled for. I've thought about this question myself.

If it's not a game per sé, since it doesn't invoice gameplay or strategy elements, why do they market this and consider it to be in the same category as, say a shooter or an RPG?
Is it because they're 'Interactive' ?
Is it because they're 'Digital Media' ?
Is it because they're 'Manwha/anime themed' ?

I think they do not deserve to be categorized in the same place as games that have an actual Technical merit of generating engines, and gameplay mechanics.

it depends on the person.

Now answering the rest of your question, several visual novels have decision points, so it is very hard to draw a line in there.

Most visual novels have some interactivity, no ?

@ Cadia : A visual novel is an interactive (in most cases) book with images, so it's superior in some points.

It's as if you said "why going to the restaurant with my GF if I can prepare spaghetti for her ? It's cheaper."
Or "Why are some people buying a Mercedes when a Fiat is obviously less expensive ?"

But you're comparing Food with Food.

Visual Novels / Books are intricately more connected than Visual Novels / Zelda

But a book can be read without the need for a computer, so I think the fact that you need a computer to play a visualnovel is a factor.

You could achieve the same "Paths" factor in a Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation, and that wouldn't be rated by Famitsu ::)

We did stuff like that in School.

Heck, the same thing can be accomplished using Window's Photo Slideshow feature.

Yeah, the engine itself is not that challenging.

A run down on a specific visual novel would be something like (I am not saying the games but fans of the genre should know which one I am talking about).

Start the game, you are greeted with a nice animated intro + original song; you go through the first scene path that hardly ever changes. After the first scene you are presented with a menú to choose different actions. depending on what you choose, those choices eventually lead you to have different story developments, in this case to spend time together with a different girl, each with their own problems. if you take the right decisions you helped one girl solve her problem which gives you an orb or mess up and not get an orb, after that the game is over. When you restart you take different choices that either makes you to finish a girl properly or go for another girl.
Once you have finished all of the girls you go to the first scene changes and now the events happen after all of the girls problem have been solved, one of the girls is your girlfriend, you again astart solving different problems in this second part which end up having your girlfriend now wife dying when giving birth then some time later your daughter also dying. If you got or not the orbs in the previous part you can actually save their lifes, otherwise you get bad ends.

so, in short, those are decision taking games.

Ace Attorney is close to a visual novel except you have more options to choose from.
