I started asking this in the Ask A User thread, but since I missed so many users I decided to make a thread out of it. Its a good way to get to know everyones taste and find some common ground/points of debate

You only get 5 characters, so throw out what you think makes MUGEN special or worth it. Make sure to specify author

Cool thread; would certainly help in figuring out what characters are worth DLing.

Helps that I'm rather odd in that there's nothing I dislike on an aesthetic level. Unfortunately no recommendations because I hardly ever play mugen, partly because I don't know what to download.

It's been a while since I mugened but
  • Kung Fu Man.  He comes with the engine, you already have him.  And if he's not on your roster, what's wrong with you?
  • Jedah by Rei.  Darkstalkers is cool, Jedah is cool and this version of him lets you customize to be whichever edition you want.  That's pretty cool.
  • Dante by Bugya.  This character is pretty rough and needs a lot of work to feel like an actual fighting game, but it plays like DMC3 and DMC3 is the best game Capcom ever made IMO so fuck it.  Still hoping for an update though.

I can't think of two others it's too subjective.

He actually studied every single game he referenced, down to the core. Doing this properly requires understanding how the original system was made, not just winging it.

i suppose so! i just like seeing people name chars, and like i stated before, people always have just pointed towards authors without really any concrete recs to base off of. if you pointed to warusakis stuff, obv some of it is coded better than others as he developed the system and his ability. how would a casual fan know any of that off the bat? i think specific character recs are a fun way of getting to know peoples taste and they point you in a way more specific direction

Personally there's lots of characters I would recommend that it's difficult to narrow down to just 5.

Fervicante's Yurika Kirishima and Lucy Fernandez with sprites by On.Off.  Two of my favorite custom KOF style characters with the former coming from my favorite series and blending well with this new style.  The latter is an original character that is a must to be downloaded.

Reika Murasume by Taruse.  Another original sprites character with everything unique to her.

Lord Ravenous by On.Off and Ex-Infernis.  Personally this one is long overdue for an update and the sprites themselves are just eye-cataching and worth downloading.  Seriously, have him in your folder to save these sprites from obscurity.

All characters by Kishio.  The same person that made Ronald McDonald also created original characters with his sprite style.  I feel they are the most underrated original characters.

Sachiel by Rikard and Dark Cloud.  Japanese fan base love him, so should you.  Makes a good end boss for SNK rosters.

CvS2 Bluestreak by Diepod and Jesuszilla.  A fresh take of a new character converted in this kind of gameplay.
