What controls do you guys use to play mugen? Keyboard or gamepad? And why?

I use a keyboard to play mugen with. The keyboard works fine with me i guess. I mean, its not hard for me to do combo attacks and stuff on a keyboard. So what do you guys use?

I use a Logitech USB Game pad that is designed to represent a ps2 controller as far as the button layout goes. I can play with the keyboard too but I prefer to use the gamepad because is it makes Mugen feel more like a real platformer game.
I am Zerox admin of Warcraft 3 Unlimited, 3D modeler, and now a new Mugen addict seeking to learn how to create Mugen Characters and stages.

For the rest, I use the Xbox 360 controller.

Most of the time I use a keyboard. Sometimes I'll hook up my PS3 controller. And when playing with friends I'll use my Nyko airflow EX pads (same button scheme as PlayStation controllers except better grips, and airflow to keep your hands dry and cool). since I got 2 of them.

Keyboard, my right hand works better on directions. I wonder how i'd fair with a left handed gamepad though.

Yeah, if I have no choice but to keyboard it up the right hand operates the d-pad. Better control due to the 'I'm gonna get you my pretty' crouched hand placement. Can't see how people use their left hand to control direction via keyboard.

Arrows are directions, Z,X,C are the punch buttons (XYZ) and A,S,D are the kick buttons (ABC)

I use a good ol PS2 Controller because I can't use the Keyboard worth crap and also using a 360 character with a keyboard is madness. :(

Well i used a keyboard for a very long time for playing and creating proposes, then i found it hard to preform certain moves like Rugal's Gigantic Press. Afterward i switched to a PS2 look a like controller and things are much better now. ;D

The only PC Gamepad I own is a Corded 360 Controller. Which has the worst D-Pad ever and a non-good-at fighting analog stick. So I use the keyboard - Q,W,E,A,S,D and Up, Down, Left, Right. And Enter as my Taunt.

Keyboard, arrow keys for directions, rewfds for abcxyz .  Mostly because I don't have a gamepad, but also because of what Kenshiro said.  I've been using a keyboard so long I don't think I'd even be able to play with anything else.

wth is up with people using the punches on bottom, never played an arcade or Saturn Capcom game?

Anyway keyboard because it makes the coding->testing transition seemless. 8)

MY biggest problem with the keyboard is not performing commands or combos, as those can just be practiced and memorized. but performing precise jumps, runs guards and stops.

I use my Hori arcade Joystick, that was made for the 360. I'm also testing the Wii classic controller, with Mugen.

Atm, I don't have a PC controller so I used the keyboard, but I plan on getting a pair of them so me and my friend can battle each other on my MUGEN.

The buttons I use are:
QWE = XYZ
ASD = ABC

i use a logitech dual action controller with analog sticks lol though i only use the analog sticks for emulators lol and why? cause i grew up playing fighters with a controller on my ps1 which my controller resembles lol

With a bit of precision, I find it far easier to play with a keyboard than with a controller.
QWEASD for controls, arrows or numpad for movement.
Exact setup depends on the character I'm using. Usually this matches the respective arcade config, but I have a couple of minor variations (ie, for JJBA characters I use ASD as attacks and W as Stand, as opposed to something like QWE+A).

360 controller. I can't play fighting games as good with a pad as a control stick after getting used to it so much. Movement is much smoother this way, and I don't have to worry about hurting my thumb. :P

I completely forgot to ansqer why, so in short:

keyboard can give you carpal tunel and is imprecise for jumping and other fast moves.
gamepad is light and reliable even if it's slow compared to a joystick.
joysticks are the best except for the fact that they need a solid base, which is something I don't have on my desk.

Keyboard.  I'm not buying a gamepad for just one 'game'.  In some ways it's better, others worse.  If I could only link up my Saturn pad to my PC...that'd be wonderful.

I have the ps controller converter, But when I was trying to play the mugen's( I just play don't create) I coulnd't get it to detect it. Tested it out on my SNES emu and it works fine. Any suggestions?

Gamepad beacuse you can do moves that needs to do 360 circle, you can press a+b or x+y without any problem aaand also you can press 3 buttons in one time also without any problem.

actually on keyboard I can link combo better, since several fingers work faster than just thumb, let alone sore blistered thumb. but 360 is very difficult to perform.

Since I'm not into 360 controls and what not (and more of a quarter/half circle whore ;P), I use the keyboard. Much easier.

I actually have a friend though who can pull off a hadouken with only one hand on a ps2-ish gamepad, using the analog stick O_o. Sick bastard...

There is a fighting game I play with a gamepad though (here on the comp, with an emulator): Thrill Kill.

I use a Keyboard for MUGEN: W, A, S, and D comprise my D-Pad, JKL = ABC, and UIO = XYZ. It just works wonders for me, personally.

I'm looking for a new controller for Mugen to run on Windows Vista like the Gravis Xterminator; the way the 6 main buttons are lined up. But I can't seem to find anything that measures up. I hate playing fighting games with the button layouts of an XBox or Playstation controller. Anybody have any recommendations??

I use a keyboard for mugen (and plus any other fighting games)
for some odd reasion, I've grown quite used to playing fighting games with the keyboard. (thanks alot mugen) and can't play well with the controler.
so I've decided the controler's role will be for everything that's not fighting game related.

And you other keyboarders have some weird ass configurations - I got the arrow keys in lieu of a joystick, ASD as XYZ and ZXC as ABC, though I have a different configuration for Neo Geo games:

QAWS = ABCD - a Capcomized Neo Geo configuration, with Q and W on top as Weak and Strong Punch (A and C), and using A and S as Weak and Strong Kick (B and D), though AS for punches and ZX for kicks also works as makes switching from a Capcom fighting game to a Neo Geo one much easier.

At first, I thought some of the more difficult motions (360s, 720s, pretzels, etc.) were nigh impossible, though I've learn'd how to perform pretzel motions (RAGING STORM!!1) and apparently others can SPD enemies with their keyboards, so it's not as bad as I though it was. The only disadvantage it has is that it makes using joysticks much harder to learn - it took me a while to Hadouken on the Xbox.

Keyboard. I'm planning on changing the main button (ABCXYZ) configuration soon, but for now, it's SAW = ABC and ZXQ = XYZ while the directional keys are the d-pad and Enter is the Start button.

Only reason I use this setup is because 1. I have no money so I can't get a controller, and 2. Even if I get a controller, my laptop would be confiscated, so yeah.

for serious play, a pad works wonders; but for trying things out the keyboard makes things simple.
how does one beat broly with a keyboard? (without cheating!) i know, i know, break the keyboard!!

oh and for those that are more "broke" than i, periodically check the local thrift store for nearly new pads, i've been lucky.
