I am attempting to convert Gouken from Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition. This is NOT a joint project as all sprites were ripped by myself at 800x600 resolution. Sprites were ripped at 30fps partially because my computer cannot handle 60fps and because I don't want to rip over 4000 sprites as Werewood did. Therefore character fluidity will be less than Juri, but still acceptable.

This project is planned for OPEN DEVELOPMENT and I will constantly release public test versions until his completion (similar to how the Juri progress thread ran). As of now, the first public test version is up.

Currently, I have ripped everything except winposes and loss poses.

Gouken's entire moveset is complete. Both of his ultras don't have limiters so please use them responsibly   ::)

btw you can finish every single attack, but the ultra's may confuse you cause, the angle changes when a character makes his ultra, in short form, CamAng

Your WIP project topic title "Gouken -SSF4:AE-" is quite attractive.

I'm so utterly wowed, and near speechless when seeing your Gouken WIP project screenshots!  :o

How do you manage to rip sprites from 3-D SSF4:AE game?  Or do you draw the sprites by yourself, like YUUKI_in_SLASH's hitosyura?

By the way, are you making Juri too?

I am not usually a fan of 3D characters converted to 2D, but I must say this one looks amazing, obviously you put A LOT, REALLY A LOT, of work into it. I am really looking forward for the final version, keep up the good work dude!  :sugoi:

gouken plays ok but can you make ssf4: ae ryu because he is like an easy character to make and dont need the unnessasary stuff that most people put in characters.

Dude!! Couple of weeks/months!? If you were following Juri's thread back when, she easily took 4 or so months. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here. You can't simply rush great work no matter how talented you are. As an example, Cybaster and Cyanide take as long as they have to. And both of these guys crank out epicness.

I've had a few minutes to spend with Gouken and man is he awesome. It's a little odd at first to see a 30fps conversion as his frames aren't as silky smooth while comparing him to his actual counterpart. This is just splitting hairs though. Gouken is solid, and that's what counts. Chalk up another amazing WIP from Mr. I!! I can't wait for updates. Keep up the amazing job.  :sugoi:

The transition from the landing from a jump to the idle stance looks kind of awkward.

An extra frame or two will be added to the landing animation. The recovery time will not change though and ctrl will be given at the exact same time.

If I were to make SSF4 characters, Ryu would be one of the last ones I would do, only because he is too straightforward and uninteresting to me.

Quick question, and it's a longshot. With the release of SFxT, would you consider giving a Tekkenite the attention you're giving Gouken?? It would be rad to see Yoshimitsu, Ogre and Heihachi. Just sayin.  ;)

Thank you very much for providing a demo!  Just tried it out, it felt like playing the real SSF4!  His hurricane kick landing seems to delay a bit though.  And his throws're missing?

I also want to see Oni and Evil Ryu in Mugen, especially Oni because it's a new exclusive character.

By the way, how's your Juri progress doing?

   - No Overhead for the moment ? ~F + Middle Punch

Alpha version 2.5 is now available.

The only major change is that the demon flip grab is added.

It should now be impossible to infinitely juggle Ex Sengokushoha in the corner.

His hurricane kick landing seems to delay a bit.

The recovery of all hurricane kick landing is 20 frames. This value will not change.

Disclaimer: The following is just something I though would be a good-workaround for the Ultras. I'm just throwing it out there in case he agrees that it works.

Since you can't get those 2D Ultras (I tried looking for the mod myself, but couldn't find it) you can just rip the ultra as-is into still-frame screenshots (not 60fps, since it'll take forever), so that he's doing it against one of the small characters? (Juri, or Cammy for example).

You can then erase the opponent from those stills and replace it with an blurry outline that resembles a human body (you can make the blur look all Sumi-e in true SF4 fashion). The background you can delete and just leave transparent.

Essentially, if the move connects --> Play video made of those still-frames --> Apply Damage.

Essentially, it's kinda like the "on-fire" sprites in the original SF2... it looked like a HUGE body on fire, yet it was used for every character, even Chun-Li, and we didn't complain, lol...

Of course, if you find out how to mod the game, you'd probably want to go with 2D Ultras instead... but this might work for the time being.

Since ripping the ultras and stuff will probably take a while, I decided to upload Version 3.0 which adds his super.

I guess, he's almost at a playable state.

Disclaimer: The following is just something I though would be a good-workaround for the Ultras. I'm just throwing it out there in case he agrees that it works.

Essentially, if the move connects --> Play video made of those still-frames --> Apply Damage.

Essentially, it's kinda like the "on-fire" sprites in the original SF2... it looked like a HUGE body on fire, yet it was used for every character, even Chun-Li, and we didn't complain, lol...

Of course, if you find out how to mod the game, you'd probably want to go with 2D Ultras instead... but this might work for the time being.

I have my own plans for now, but if his ultras ever do get ripped without zoom, I wont hesitate to switch.

The super works pretty well in its current state. Hopefully you'll be able to rip with the real animations in 2D pretty soon.

It looks like you're going with an idea somewhat similar to the one I suggested. Are you planning to leave the opponent out of those shots altogether?

I added a 2nd demonstration video to the first post so you can see how his ultra 1 combo looks like at its current state.

It seems acceptable to me. I might have to disable the foreground elements.

I may also consider using a white background because it's more of a "good" shoryuken.

Ah, I hadn't seen the link (I thought you were referring to the still screens originally).

It works pretty well! (for spinal, at least).

I would adjust the movement upward so that it's a little bit faster (also, so that the opponent flies a bit higher as well), but that's just nit-picking.

Unfortunately what I thought would be much easier turned out to be much harder. The mod that turned off effects masks the lightning effect and turns it into a black screen that obstructs the player, making ripping Ultra 2 Impossible for now.

I must now research methods to mitigate this effect.

You can now try the version that includes his ultra 1.

Unfortunately there is no revenge meter system yet so this means that you can use it, wherever and whenever you feel like it, so please use responsibly  ;). If you have difficulty pressing all 3 buttons during the motion, you can also activate it by pressing start -> qcf qcf start.

Let me know if the zoom-ins need fixing: position adjusting, etc...

ARGHH!! Forgot to apply ceiling to the damage!! Ignore the "Expression truncated to integer" debug stuff. It will be fixed.

I think the zooming is too strong on the first hit, and a little too on the 2nd hit.
This can really be seen with Gouken VS Gouken, as you can easily compare sizes.
Position for custom states feel fine and everything else is on spot.

Also, when Gouken recovers at the end of the move, there's a darker tone on his head. Not sure you can do much about this.
When the stage comes back to screen, Gouken is falling down from the sky, but it really feels like he's not been falling for long, killing the effect of him going high in the sky. So yeah, maybe try to make him come back from higher.

Will you add background speed effect for the 3rd hit ? Really looks static as it is now. Some zooming lines FX on first two hits and vertical speed FX on the 3rd one would really make the whole attack more dynamic IMO, if you can find some good effects.

For the revenge bar, you can take Rolento's SF4 KFM code and FX if you want, he made it for that. :P

Finally, I noticed there's no turn animation. Are you planning to add one ?

Never thought of using Gouken vs Gouken to do sizes. I just picked kfm and adjusted until it looked the best.

The darker tone on his head is due to an effect that couldn't be removed, or at least I didn't know how to. It may also be because of the camera adjustments because the transition from landing to stand does look awkward if you look at his left foot.

Regarding falling from the sky, I was trying to emphasize the impact more than how high he jumped. That's why he has a slow, floaty fall.

Here was the original sprite video that i ripped from, needed resizing as well.



I will add the turn, its only 1 sprite I think.

Another update gives Gouken his complete moveset. The ultras have no limiters and can be used whenever you want so it is a bit broken as of now.

The turn sprites have not been ripped yet so please wait for those.

I added a few new screens that show selecting ultra choices as well as how the super ko bg looks like.

This character was designed for 1.0 but was constructed in a way that it should work on WinMugen (plus).

Unfortunately another demo is not ready at this time.

THat's some shitty nitpicking, but the ultra combo bar has some empty parts between the pink bar that fills up and the black borders of the meter bar itself.
It appears at the base of the pink filling bar, in the bottom.

Sounds great. Having the choice to be unrestricted is my personal preference.

I never had much experience with Gouken, but from what I know with compared to your variant, you've done an incredible job recreating him in Mugen. Solid on all fronts IMO.  :sugoi:

I just tested Version 5.0 and it is smooth, also great ultra animations along with ultra font finisher, i enjoy a lot playing with this Gouken! i dare to say that this is the best Gouken out there, Mr.I great work!!  :sugoi:

PS: I hope you can make Oni some time later when you totally finish Gouken, i know you are gonna make an extraordinary job in case you decide to do it.  8)

Unfortunately I cannot add any more frames to the forward and backdash. Since they are ripped at 30 fps, it will always skip 1 frame so even if i were to re rip it, it will have the same number of frames.

You have done a great job on this character! The Jump MK mix up is there and combos properly. The Senkugoshoha attributes work properly and the EX version allows for follow up. The timing on the Kogoshin is appropriate. I really love playing him!

I have a few items that can be added to the "to do" list as well, if you already have this info then please diregard:
* Back throw should be able to combo into the Forbidden Shoryuken.
* Back throw should be able to be timed to connect a full Shin Shoryuken also.
* The recovery from the Focus Attack is a little too swift
* The Shin Shoryuken command with "start" in the CMD is clever since some keyboards can't handle the 3 punch button input. In the CMD file the command shouldn't be noted as "start" though, it should be notated as "s".
* The dizzy sound can be programmed to stop by using a "stopsnd" sctrl.

Edit: I'm making some palettes but there is a good bit of color bleed here so they won't be game accurate, only game inspired.

I also find that the .42 scale is more of a KoF size, I switched to .46 to match other Capcom characters.
