Title: Pandas Stuff
Post by: 100_Sad_Pandas on February 26, 2013, 03:01:33 am
Hi, I used to make a lot of sprites when I was younger, although none of them were any good. But since I just started mugen I guess I could share some sprites.

(http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/1073/asura.gif) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/687/asura.gif/)

Special Thanks to Chaos Dante for letting me make a gif of his Asura sprite, which is pretty cool, he deserves all the credit for this one. All I did was animate it a little and make it a gif.

(http://imageshack.us/a/img62/9855/standm.th.png) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/62/standm.png/)

This is a wip spritesheet that i'm making of the Fate franchises saber. I've made the stand and crouching stances so far. The base was from Reisbyfe from Melty Blood.

Since these are the only 2 recent ones I've made, I guess I'll show an old, crappy sheet I made a few years back. (I was REALLY into Godzilla)

(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/126/godzillajrspritesv2bygo.png) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/442/godzillajrspritesv2bygo.png/)

My DeviantArt name was GodzillaK90, I rarely use it at all anymore.

That Saber looks good but the shading could use some work try referencing another sprites shading

Looks good so far.

The blade could look a bit sharper at the tip though.
Also the lightsource appears inconsistent. Her dress makes the light look like it's coming from the top front, but her gloves makes the light look like it's coming from the bottom.

I could be wrong, but aren't those Godzilla sprites just the sprites he uses in Godzilla: Kaijuu Daikessen for the SNES, but shrunken?

It basically is, the sheet was made a few years back when I didn't know much, so all I did was change the pallete, change up the stand stance a little, and shrunk everything else. I was really bad back then.

Aint nobody got time fo dat! jk, i'll definitely try experimenting more, but I really hate shading.

Thx, but Chaos Dante deserves the credit for this one.

Just made a new sprite. Based it off of a superhero I made up when I was younger. Someone gets a cookie if they can determine what the base sprite was.

I haven't sprited in a while but I wanted to try to get back into it. I've been working on this the past few days.
I got some pointers in the SF3/CPS3 thread so I hope it looks alright so far.

I really appreciate critique.
BTDubbs the sprite I'm working on is the middle one. The one on the right is by Balthazar, using it for reference

I need to mention i'm an idiot and kept looking at the finished sprite on the right thinking it was yours. Like I literally didn't see the middle sprite  :ninja:

Needless to say, it all worked out in the end. The current looks far better than the previous ones did. Obviously the face needs more detail but it's looking good.

Also, I thought I'd link you to this:

What's the lightsource?

The lighting you did on the face makes it seem like it's in front of him, but his body says it's above.

IDK CPS3 style enough to critique everything but it looks nice so far

It's starting to look good, but you really need to apply more contrast into his arms. Try to make them more similar to how Necro's pants are shaded in there.

I'm not sure what you mean, sorry. Do you mean like more shading between his bicep, tricep, and other muscle in his arm? Or like between his left and right arm in general? Or something else?

Not really. The contrast in his arms still feels really weak. You need to increase it heavily, if you want to make it have more of a metallic appearance.

The title is pretty self explanatory so yeah. I've looked up Mr.A's tutorial and downloaded graphicsgale, but I have no idea what I'm doing. I also tried this method where I blow things up 1000% and draw frames from there, but I'm not that great at drawing. I've been trying to do it my own way with photoshop and this is what I've got so far.

I was told his head was too similar to Ryu (which is totally fair, based the head off of ryu's) so I tried changing it up a bit. I guess I should try fixing the hands next- but they're so hard :/
Anyways is the head better or worse than before?

You did a really good job there mate. ^_^

Also just as a reminder, for animation, try to practice with non-detailed stuff (as in don't detail them), and try to go for the CPS2 frame rate as a starter. Once you get used to it (I know I still am, but to a certain extent I might be nearly there), try making one that's a bit detailed and more fluid. ^_^

I still prefer the old hair but the final sprite looks great dude.

In terms of animating Asura, you can kinda cheat. Sine he had a brief vs debut in that lost chapter, capture his stance frames during those early seconds (he moves really fast in a short time so i think you can get the whole animation).

I'd see how well he matches proportion-wise to your sprite after resizing. If its the same, just sprite over that as a base for the anim. If not, stickfigure the anim and sprite slowly.

I never changed the hair dude.
But yeah for the stance i've been trying different things. I'll probably try blowing it all up, trace it, then minimize it again and see how that works. I basically used the lost episode stance as the base so it should be fine to sprite over.

I'll list these down:

-GIMP (bet you already knew that)
-Paint.NET
-ASESPRITE (http://www.aseprite.org/download/) If you are willing to spend $10 USD for the full version, it might be worth it. I recall this was recommended by sprite artist extraordinaire Kiwi-RGB, so it should be of some use.

Good luck!

Before when I was still working on the Apex (lol) I used Fighter Factory to line up all the sprites and then animate it. But I had to make a whole palette for each anim if I wanted to do that.

Good, that's what I was going for haha.

I've been playing necalli in the sfv brta and some of his moves could be used as inspiration for asuras imo

Lets see how this goes. I haven't sprited in a while but I've been playing F/GO a lot so I thought I'd try my hand at Shielder in Melty Blood style. Are the proportions right and does the head look fine?

It looks great. Maybe make the arms and thighs a pixel wide .

I really love how you capture the Melty Blood style in the character's face, it's looking great.

Nice stuff!
The proportions are good. i think the left foot needs more edit on how the two pre made sprites had, the right arm needs more fixing too i guess...
Keep going! I like what you did there :)

Alright, I took what you guys said into account and made the legs and right arm a pixel wider. Also fleshed out the limbs. I'm thinking I'll have to change the position of the right foot and thus change the rest of that leg as well.

@100_Sad_Pandas

Something like this? (chest area)

I'm not familiar with the style, but seeing the other 2 sprites, it's kind of subtle/minimalistic.
Hope this helps. It's looking good, so far.

That looks awesome! Do you mind if I use that and edit it a bit?

I tried using eFex's as a reference but it ended up turning out pretty bad so I just slightly edited eFex's and finished the torso
