Title: Koko the Gorilla is dead
Post by: Ricepigeon on June 21, 2018, 05:59:01 pm
https://nypost.com/2018/06/21/koko-gorilla-famed-for-using-sign-language-and-crying-over-pet-kitten-dead-at-46/

Quote
Koko, the thoughtful gorilla who captivated the world through her ability to use sign language and revealed an empathetic side to great apes, has died. She was 46. The western lowland gorilla passed away in her sleep Tuesday morning at the Gorilla Foundation’s preserve in California’s Santa Cruz mountains, the foundation said.

Koko was believed to have had an IQ of between 75 and 95 and could sign more than 1,000 words. The average IQ of a human is around 90 to 110. She also understood spoken English.

I swear to god if someone starts posting Harambe memes itt...

Here we go again. Shirts open for Koko, Koko over Donkey Kong mods, Koko vs. the World...

First I've heard of this girl though. Didn't captivate me unfortunately it seems.

I liked hearing about Koko, she showed that Gorillas can be very smart, and that nature can truly surprise you.

You gotta take into account who you're talking to, there's a definite age cutoff of who grew up in a time where Koko would have been heavily referenced and who wouldn't have

I learned about in her in school around 3 years ago.  She was the subject matter for one of our lectures.
Hearts out to her care takers and friends she's gotten close to over the years.

No, no no.

Just because it's a gorilla doesn't mean it's going to become a ludicrous meme

The hell even is "shirts open"?  I've never heard that one.  Is that supposed to be "dicks out" but, I dunno, swapped implications for women?  Don't try to force this into a meme, please.

Koko was a fascinating gorilla, and seeing her time with Robin Williams or her cats always made me smile.  It's sad news to hear of her passing, but at least is was peacefully in her sleep.

R.I.P.

I heard about her when I was young... sad to hear of her passing... just 13 days before her 47th birthday (July 4th). At least now she can finally reunite with her beloved kitten way up there. RIP Koko. Your amazing sign language communication legacy will forever live on.

At the very least, I hope Koko's knowledge of sign language can expand onto other gorillas.

Not exactly sign language, but it's already being done with other primates:

orangutans might surpass koko , they are naturally curious even in the wilds they mimic human behaviour.
