Title: Valodim's Thread 2004
Post by: Nunor on January 15, 2004, 04:44:10 pm
Just place it all here, and i will see what i can do ;)

Seems no one has Forum improvements to see implemented...

No one saw a cool feature in other Forums that liked to see here ?

I'm thinking of removing some info from the profile displayed in each post. Especifically the info about AIM, ICQ, MSN etc. That info delays unecessarly the page loading and that info is available in profile.

As i don't want to remove all, what is the one that people use more  and you would like to remain there ?

i think the forum is already perfect the way it is.

leave the website obviously, the msn, aim... can be removed.

get a better fucking irc-server.

and if there is no better server with that user-script, remove the user-count script, it's slow and doesn't even show the correct number. plus, imo, everyone here is able to count the users himself :P

and I'd like the sign-smiley-hack like on this (http://www.kornputers.com/board/thread.php?threadid=395&page=1&sid=) board. (it's german, but I think you'll get the idea.) :D

I had no problems with it ;). Good idea. (http://www.smiliemania.de/php/sg/show.php?smilie=1047786-0.png)

this sign smiley is nice ..
but believe me it needs alot of work !!
Nunor, you know how to deal with GD lib in PHP ?
because appearntly it seems this one uses this lib...
Valodim, you think you can ask them in that German forum about how they used it ?
I will do some digging about it too ..

I already asked him some time ago, it's a downloadable hack for wbb. I'll ask him to send me the hack :)

Admin : removed the last line for security reasons.

Keep the contact information, but things like the date when a person registered, the date of their last post, member number, post count and things like that would be better left to a person's individual profile page - there's no need to have all of that being mentioned everytime a post it made, as it can help short posts to take up some considerable vertical space...

*wonders if it would be considered sacrilege to merge the Graphic Arts and the Sprite Contests section, considering how much they have in common, and the extremely reduced movement in the 2nd one*

Post by: Nunor on January 21, 2004, 10:10:23 pm
No, no, no... i had so much trouble to put that info there :)
As for the merge i'm not very sure yet...

What about the Mugen Museum? I think a sticky thread in the request section is enough. A whole section is unnecessary, if you ask me.

How about increasing the amount of default avatars that people can use without offsite linking. Sure having the celebrity faces is nice but it gets boring after a while and maybe a few new additions would be nice. Even better have a contest with people submitting a couple hundred avatars then with a vote choose 20 or so to become permenent default avatars for users to use.

For some new avatars, a pic of KFM would be mandatory - other than that, perhaps some sprite editors, especially Creative Artists (we must find a use for them other than honorable mentions :P ) could donate some of their works (or create new ones) to be used as forum avatars...

Suggestions:

New feature...

1. to see other users' posts when we edit our own posts.

Why?

2. To have a new list of words for the word filter.

Why?

3. to have a little blue line to separate an user's little profile from his post. (check the messages in the private message box to see what I mean).

Why?

It'd look better IMO.

4. not to have a private message limit for the forum staff.

Why?

The members of the forum staff tend to receive and send a lot of useful messages everyday.

5. to allow the users to see more informations on the users' profiles (particularly if they've been warned or banned).

Why?

It's user-friendly.

2. To have a new list of words for the word filter.
We could deactivate it completely, since anyone knows what's meant anyway... bean :P

You might want to check on some of the links for the avatars. Several of them have not loaded correctly and I think the oro avatar may need to be replaced since only half the image is showing.

Examples? It could look better, but I'm not an expert in such things.

Quick example:

"All characters and stages by:
 Chotto-Komaru
 Ciel
 Faye, a.k.a Chloe

- creator request.

Private releases:

A.F. by MotherEarth

- Unauthorized Sprite/Code Use Release:

Abubo by Ex Inferis
Akuma-X by Socc200 && Szyslak"

And so on... IMO easier to search though the list, yada yada... plus: no more "oh, I didn't know Jin was a mrev member".  8)

BTW, I saw you removed the request limit; surely to please a certain basement owner/request master.

OK, but not today and not tomorrow. I want my part of the forum to be perfect (as perfect as possible at least), so it will be done. I have to think about how exactly it will look like.

Personally, I think this a really good idea, although be warned that you will still get those people saying... "why was THIS censored", and "I can believe they can show THIS." It's a small price, but it is a very nice feature that will appease the masses, I guess.

"2 Guests, 9 Users Colors Key."
I believe this needs a separation, somewhere.

Here are my new suggestions:

1. Make something to the forum to attract admins like Nunor.

2. Stick this topic again (it has been un-sticked since Nunor fucked with the database and uses an old backup with all topics un-sticked).

3. Fix the last remainings bugs mentioned in old or new topics (like the missing error boxes).

4. Remove some informations from the little profile (Loona and many others agreed to do that, but... forgot, I guess), particularly now that the informations are false (because of Nunor's last action on our precious accounts).

5. Add the "banned" informations in the little profile as well (I talked to a guy who was banned and I didn't know, because the "banned" was only mentioned in the "big" profile) -- maybe could we put banned members in the old category ( you know, like "news reporter, "mugen creators", etc...).

6. Remove the "reply" buttons in topics in the "creator" board for guys who have not the status (kinda hard to type a full and useful gohan-long report, hit "reply", and get a message saying we're not allowed to post and we can say bye-bye to our precious and time-consuming post).

7. Put some of the news in red (like the "do not advertise" ).

8. Add a "topic description" feature, in addition to the "topic title" (for the 1st post of a topic, of course). It could improve many things. Here's an example of a topic with that in the release section:

Title: "Lilith v1.666"
Description: "04/01/02 - with a bunch of stages".

Do you see what I mean?

4. Remove some informations from the little profile (Loona and many others agreed to do that, but... forgot, I guess), particularly now that the informations are false (because of Nunor's last action on our precious accounts).

Nunor seems quite adamant in keeping the small profile as it is, and he gets the final word on this sort of thing...

If Nunor got rid of the category, I don't see why he'd bother bringing it back - and the info is one click away.

6. Remove the "reply" buttons in topics in the "creator" board for guys who have not the status (kinda hard to type a full and useful gohan-long report, hit "reply", and get a message saying we're not allowed to post and we can say bye-bye to our precious and time-consuming post).

Copying and pasting a big post into a text editor before trying to submit it is something I've gotten used to after losing some time with similar situations - might come in handy, either for another attempt at the post or for a PM.

One of the reasons that lead to the creation of that extra Releases section was for people who'd rather avoid replies from newbies that wouldn't have proper feedback - but it seem that despite that, many kept using the regular Releases section even after the Creators' one was created.

The possibility of getting rid of it is being seriously considered, and we're just waiting for a final decision from Nunor on the matter.

Quote
7. Put some of the news in red (like the "do not advertise" ).

It's happened before - I think that's something that's better kept as an exception than as a rule, so it'll get more impact when i's necessary.

I know he was adamant when the informations where correct. But now that's they're no more, it's just a bunch of words and letters with no real sense. Excepted to waste space. Imo. Also, I thought Nunor agreed to have an on/off user-customizable switch for these informations (I can't check right now since it seems I have no more access to the staff section, but I think it was there).

Nunor got rid of it, because at that time it was a good idea. Now that many guys on this forum are banned, it's not so easy to differency who is banned from who's not (unless you take the time to check the big profile of every guy you're replying to). Anyway, if not the old "banned" category, why not a little LED or something on the little profile?

The removal of the "reply" button for people who shouldn't reply would be better and less time-consuming, imo.

01110011 01110100
01101111 01101101

01101001 01110100
01101100 01100101

NOTE: It happens not only in Firefox, but also in IE, so it can't be my browser that causes it, I think

Copying and pasting a big post into a text editor before trying to submit it is something I've gotten used to after losing some time with similar situations.
Mm, why not simply copy before submitting, and then open text editor and paste only if that fails?  Saves some clicks, and you don't need to keep the text editor open most of the time.

Anyway, Valodim, could you please disable the scrolling marquee feature on these forums?  In my opinion, it serves no sufficient purpose.  And unlike with animated GIFs, I can't simply press the Stop button or hit Escape to end their distractiveness.

P.S.  Does Opera let you turn each of those (scrolling marquees and animated GIFs) off and on with a single keystroke or mouseclick or two?

Please use a decent english, Loona. ;)

On topic:I don't want interesting topics moved to the junk because of a few "flames", and because mods are too "lazy" to calm things down (please forgive me if this sounds as a personal attack: it is not).

Other suggestion: to extend the list of available unicode characters (inter alia, it'd help foreigners to post and read replies in their language if they're not fluent in english and need translations -- I believe Winsane and Val know what I'm talking about).

//edit: the quote system is buggier than ever: it removed one quote of mine.  :(

instant messages are back.

only problem: they aren't counted.

you should be able to view them, they just aren't shown properly at the "you have X messages, Y are new".

new messages will be counted correctly, though.

I can't update this collectively (I tried, using subqueries and LEFT JOIN but it just didn't work...), but I can update it manually, if you really need this value to be correct tell me :P

Of course the new stars were added after I stopped being a local mod.

Why back in my days whenever I posted outside my own area I got the normal yellow stars! And I had to type through 6 feet of snow!

In regards to splitting posts.

I have successfully split posts in the release and creator release boards.

I cannot split them in the WIP or Mugen Discussion boards.

Nice I cannot move threads from WIP, Mugen Discussion, or the request forums either.

Top prorities should be resolving these problems and giving moderators the ability to warn again.

I didn't read what Vince posted but here are 2 advantages over the later forum I already enjoy.

Longer post potential. Gohan is dancing for joy :P

Better quoting system.

When a link to a topic is given it stays the same even if the topic is moved.

Those are the 5 advantages I have seen thus far.

We just have to be patient and wait for Val to finish things up.

Oh and quick reply box is an option in your profile.

getfile-stuff is already done, how do you like it (http://mcspace.mugenguild.com/)? directly implemented into the smf permission system :smartass:

solve the backup-box-problem (I finally found the query yesterday :D)
reimplement the shared files (15% done :P)

all the other things (split topic function, readd 'all' , smilies, etc...)

What I meant is that in the last version, a mod could only warn a user in his section for any stupidities commited in that section. Ergo I wasn't able to warn outside Graphic Arts.
Now I'm able to do it.

merged posts. happy? ;)

baaaad news for all you backup-junkies:

in the old instant message system, the backup-messages were marked by using an impossible combination of readby, deletedbysender and deletedbyrecipient. but the new system filters out those messages on sight, so... sorry, guys, most of the backup-messages are lost :(

if someone really can't live without some info from his backup box, I have the database-backup (no, I won't convert it.) and can lookup single members' backup-boxes... pm me if necessary... :P

What is popular isn't always right.  What is right isn't always popular.

The request forum doesn't need these hostilities.  Please redirect your anger to the feedback forum.

More importantly, this forum or Dev won't change to this ever.  Oh, and Splode's stuff is still available at the same place it has been for three or four years. (1 weeks ago)

Well, let me answer part by part:

Quote
What is popular isn't always right.  What is right isn't always popular.

Not quite democratic, even though this forum isn't a democracy.  8)
Actually, I wasn't speaking about right or wrong, but about popular and impopular.

Quote

Which hostilities? Just showing a different viewpoint?  ::)
Still, I agree about this place being better suited than that one.  :)

It was democratic to go to war, but can you justify any war.  President Bush was elected "Democraticly".  Democracy has all too many flaws, but I won't get into that.

The creators hold the only worth while opinions in this matter.  It is basically their property.  The majority of them have decided this is the best way.  The alternative is that none of these releases meet the public.

Good, because you didn't understand me (and critizing democracy, dude, points quite obviously that you've never lived under a dictatorship like we've had!  :P):
the other person was stating that MOST people would agree to this particular Mugen ethics' code. I said that such a fact was arguable and that a poll would be appropiate to point that.

Thus your critics on democracy are quite out of place... and Bush, and war, and so on. If ppl in USA can't implement democracy correctly, doesn't mean the Greek didn't concieve it so about 2300 years ago, but I won't get into that.  :-X

Quote

I agree... partially. One can publish or not what one does, but haven't things got worse and worse over the years? Haven't more and more secluded and closed communities given "secret links" and "private releases"? I personally think this is a loss to the Mugen scene. Not that any one that creates takes my opinion into account, I think it is good to rethink some stuff many people here take for granted.
Maybe encouragement towards private releases and secluded communities will just kill the scene gradually, maybe not. I think thinking about it won't harm anyone. :)

I don't have to live in ignorance to know ignorance.  Democracy is flawed absent of its level of implementation.  It is the very idea of it, not the example I live in.

Who people?  Which code? ???

Can you tell me what has been private and what has not?  Fact is, you won't know.  A large part of the reason that creations have flowed in fewer numbers is that most characters have been converted multiple times.  How can you get someone motivated to create a character that is only an iota better than the last one??

You said it: a part of the reasons. I still believe that a lot of non-requestable, non-downloadable, ultra-zekret stuff is stopping many ppl from getting into Mugen, and turning a lot of others into "I hate Warehouses!" drones. Considering the fact of the gazillions chars/stages still unconverted, I would say the one you mentioned is a small part of the reasons, not a big one.
And you know what I mean by "private", fella. Like that address you won't give.  ::)

Nice sharing. :(

A point I'ld like to remark here is I still think creators have the last word here; but not the only one. Should an organized alternate host page for as many creations as possible show up, with updates from creators and working with them, not against them, I think we all would have a nicer time. Abandoncharhouses are as bad as crybaby creators that just want to brag about their "private" work: they upset other people.

haha, if it was that easy ^_^

no, no... :)

The php process runs as another user as the ftp one. so, I can't use php to do filesystem operations, otherwise the files are unaccessable via ftp. which sucks. (it was like that on the old forum software)

also, integrating this into the board would probably have been more difficult than coding it myself :P

plus, the more I code, the better I get (:P)

I just noticed it wasn't there yet, that's all. And I wanted that SMF banner gone as soon as possible :P.

Anyway, a minor thing I noticed now that the banner is put in the layout: The right side of the banner isn't completely white :-\. There's no rush, as long as it gets fixed some day :P. The banner will become more part of the rest of the page this way.

the old topics don't really hurt, and it's enough when I remove old ones from time to time :)

Exactly how do you do this - group removal, or individually choosing  topics for removal? And is that for every section, or did you just mean Requests?...

Some old topics from several sections can still be quite useful, especially for people who use the Search function...
Title: Re: Valodim's Thread
Post by: aokmaniac13 on November 15, 2004, 05:41:11 am
Individually choosing would be such a hassle, don't you think?
Title: Re: Valodim's Thread
Post by: Loona on November 15, 2004, 06:42:36 am
But would also make sure that topics with useful content aren't disposed of - old stuff in Requests iand Junk s usually discardable, and so may be Help topics that for some reason didn't get answered, or old Releases that got no feedback and eventually got updated later, for example, but there's a lot of old post/topics with things that may still be useful...
Title: Re: Valodim's Thread
Post by: Sepp on November 15, 2004, 02:10:39 pm
I believe the old topics talk just applies to Junk and Request sections, someone (could have been me) suggested a limit for these sections kind of like in the Dump sections, because old request topics are really of no interest anymore, same should apply to topics in a section where stupid or spam topics go.

Edit: And Val now just deletes old topics in these sections from time to time. At least that's what I think. XD

Being an admin you should know, that there's a special part of Administration Center called "Forum Maintenance", which has a "Remove Old Posts" function.

In there you can select how old the posts should be to get deleted, and from which sections.

I know that - but since I have a tendency to keep potentially useful stuff around, i don't use those deletion functions - if Valodim does, I'd appreciate know exactly how he does it and using which criteria...

I suggest to make another board for technical stuff that don't have a direct link to Mugen.

Shin akuma please anyone?
I think the one that mario made is the best.
(http://www.mugenguild.com/forumx/Themes/classic/images/warnpmod.gif) requesting a character twice for the third time.

I suggest a surrounding black line on the yellow text for level-2 warnings. Crappy on blue background, and look at this on a white one:  requesting a character twice for the third time.

I suggest the higher-ups to release their promises ( look: :mugoi: (http://www.mugenguild.com/forumx/index.php?topic=16770.0) )... or to make a list to remember them.

Otherwise I'll suggest to fix that typo (Sugestion)... for each post in this topic.   >:D :P

Title: Re: Valodim's Thread

It'd have helped to separate things that aren't related to Mugen but ends up being either in the creator help or in the setup help (while it's clearly specified these ones are for Mugen questions only). Anyway, maybe my 2nd suggestion (to change the description of the setup help board) is more appealing to you?

Otherwise I "fear" what already happened in the topic I linked to: guys will post in wrong places. From what I see in the boards descriptions, the only place that fits topics like that is the "General Discussion": discuss about what you want.

Oh, and I know that technical questions not related to Mugen is not exactly what this forum is for, but if we can help people from time to time about that, then why not?

Another thing related to the help section: IMO the "creator help" board should be made for creators asking help about their own stuff, or for others to ask about real bugs in other guys' creations. And the board description should reflect that. <-- hell, even mods don't know where to put some topics; I've seen the same topic moved back and forth at least 4 times by 2 different mods.  And I don't even talk about the dozen of "MOVED" topics. :P

I suggest to make topics deletable by regular users when:
a) it's their own topic.
b) nobody replied yet.

...like it was in the previous forum.

I suggest to add a flag-on-mouse-over-icon to the warning icons on the little profiles...

...like there was in the previous forum.

I suggest to fix the "recount total" bug (it doesn't work for the inbox).

You mean like the topic about SFMAME? Since I guess it's on Mugen creation purpose (in that case, ripping) the right section would be Creation Help.
I wasn't a mod yet, but I would have kept it in my section , like I'll keep every topic about emulators questions, artmoney help, etc... as long as the starter's goal is creating for Mugen.

IMO the "creator help" board should be made for creators asking help about their own stuff, or for others to ask about real bugs in other guys' creations.

About the latter, no.
I think that fixing one char's bug is relevant to the Setup & Config Help section. If it's about modifying a char to his personal tastes, then sure. Such topics are welcomed in my section.

hell, even mods don't know where to put some topics; I've seen the same topic moved back and forth at least 4 times by 2 different mods.  And I don't even talk about the dozen of "MOVED" topics. :P

I was the first moving this topic. And now that you mention it, I saw that KFM moved it back to Creation Help, but it wasn't me who then move it back again to Setup & Config Help ???
I should have splitted it, keeping the part about writing your code in the def.

(Hmm... guess I'll have to make a sticky soon)

I'd be more inclined to first make a change in the Creation Help section's description so that it'll cover things like ripping sprites, sounds or other sorts of data - currently it focuses on Mugen's files, and there's more to the process than those...

If the bug is preventing the character from running, Setup & Config would be the place - otherwise, if it's for some personal improvement or customization (for example, changing a portrait, or an animation's speed, an attack's damage, or removing a whole state, or making some effect transparent, or something more complex than any of those) Creation Help is the place - even if it's not for something to be released, what's asked and answered may be important to help the person get used to mess around with Mugen's files, an experience which will be useful if that person ever gets round to creating something from scratch, or at least fit for release under some other circumstances (like coding a character from a sprite pack, for example).

Never even thought of using that IE-specific shit... --;

Yes, something like this, and indeed it only works in IE (at least it's not working in Opera and I just hate that).
You may want to change the color to orange

or to something more visible when using the default skin of this forum.

I suggest to increase the numbers of characters one can type in the "Subjects". There is more place to fill until we reach the "modify","quote" and "delete" buttons (unless there are other "secret mod" buttons).

I suggest to increase the size for the same "Subject" field (it currently has only 1/3 of the place it could have).

I suggest to add new Message Icons.

And finally I suggest that the "Hey, random, you have x messages, 0 are new" counter only count PMs that are in the Inbox (because it currently counts the ones I have in my "inbox backup").

Talking about "backup", does this word remind you of something? *wink* *wink* *nudge *nudge*
Talking about "inbox", does this word remind you of this little bug?

Speaking about Suave Dude's habbit of doing such, and what Messatsu is reffering to too.
I usually does that when I can't edit my post(s). And my browser's probably not in cause.

Shall I remove his permission to do so?
No.

How about

1. Increase the font size of the news header
OR
2. Add a static header that will read  NEW MEMBERS PLEASE VIEW THE ANNOUNCEMENTS FORUM!! or the like. Since you know, the where to get winmugen is there.

The red color spoils the text, even when under the influence of the
Code:

tags, and we can't prevent a quote from being spoiled (read: quotes aren't hidden by "spoiler" tags).

I suggest to modify that behaviour.

And... a PM from Nunor? What's that? :muh:

I just edited the "Lost Passwords!!!" post so it'll refer to "active administrators" instead of Nunor himself - not that someone who lost hir password would be able to PM, but that person could always try and contact soneone else with access to the forum to send such a message...

I already said that in the junk, posts of people who send chars would not count as well which, imo, sucks.
