apparently Vita is getting tons of Indie games. Terraria has been confirmed and in the distant future MineCraft might just happen for Vita and PS3. since Notch(creator of MineCraft) stepped down as director and Jeb took over he said once the Microsoft exclusivity deal expires they will consider the Vita and/or PS3 as the next home for MineCraft. I myself believe it will happen because there's lots of money to be made there. If Terraria is coming which it is in Q2 of this year MineCraft is a must even if it is somewhere between the Pocket Edition and the PC Version.
as far as other releases go
Soul Sacrifice will be out on the 30th(fun as hell actually)
I hope I'm not disturbing the flow of things on this topic since what I'm saying does pertain to the topic.

Sony promises the PS4 will have the strongest launch lineup in Playstation history.
Considering that they've never had a strong launch at all (PS3 being the best of them though with a couple of key exclusives.) I hope they actually raise the bar for launch titles, just to teach Nintendo a lesson.

For me, their europe launch of the original playstation was pretty solid with games like ridge racer, wipeOut, toshinden, rayman and the raiden project.
Since arcades were allowed for age 18+ people in Germany it was the first time i played a arcade shooter with graphics like that :-)
The ps2 launch had tekken tag tournament 2..that was everything needed at the time.

It was decent, but hardly a "strong" launch lineup. There was a few gems but nothing that really made it a MUST BUY gameplay-wise. My dad first bought it for me as a DVD player, and it stayed that way for awhile.

I'm not sure if it's the same in Europe, but the US store forces you to download them right away, last I checked. Unless you use the web store (https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/#!/en-us/home/main), that is. It wasn't always that way, but they changed it a few months ago.

in europe you can just refuse the download after. you get the things marked as "bought" and you can redownload them whenever you want.

Sony's gamescom press conference is over now, but they saved a key nugget of information for the very end. Just before closing out, Sony confirmed earlier PlayStation 4 pricing information, added that the console would launch in 32 countries, and finally dropped the release dates: November 15 in North America, and November 29 in Europe.
Another impressive bit of news from this section of the conference is that PlayStation 4 pre-orders have topped 1 million worldwide

well I think they should've kept God of War Ascension and made it for PS4. that way they could've introduced the system with one of Playstation's most beloved titles...that or a new Crash Bandicoot. With God of War franchise coming to a close and no new games coming out except for HD ports to Vita it's the last we've seen of GOW. however I think spinoffs might be necessary. As far as Metal Gear Solid goes I think The Boss should have her own respective game. maybe on Vita. It'd be awesome to explore her story of how she and Snake trained together and developed CQC. all the way up to her defection and death by the hands of Snake himself.

the eye toy has been a staple of sony games since ps2, for dance party games and all When the move come out the eye toy had a major upgrade in defining how far from the screen the user actually is ( via ps move ball, the one on the tip of the controller ) and it managed to incorporate the skeleton tracking better, but it was already doing it previous to the move.
edit: if you want to check it, its exactly what you would expect http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5BG7kMsmaI
ps3 move demo crap if you want to see what else they were doing with it, but basically its a mix of kinect plus wii, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_A7dk4s7iQ

The company is currently weighing up whether the PS4 device should be pitched as a key differentiator for the console or a non-essential add-on.
Smart to consider it, but I expect / hope it'll be "just an add-on". A key selling point would require massive support from as many games as possible - I mean even if it's built in the system, it'd have to not be shitty by default. Good that they're keeping it optional to maintain the lower base price.

Sony finally talks about PS3 to PS4 games and will only be 10$. Still no word on backwards compatibility, but did talk about Gaikai yesterday.

İ want to know how the quality of their Games will look if it will be 10$ only. They wrote that PS4 is an upgraded PS3 but, this should be the same with their Games.

The PS3 games already cost around 60 to 70€ around here (dunno how much they cost in the US) so a $10 increase, not too far from 10€, already makes PS4 games very expensive. Of course the problem is the cost of current gen games that's completely bonkers in the first place, but the total price is still insane.

Like movies and music albums, video games prices are falling fast after their release though.
If you are not one of the people who need to have every game at launch, you can grab older games often for 30 bucks or even less.
Street Fighter X Tekken (March 2012) for the PS3 as example is available since around 3-4 months here for only 15 Euro in the local gamestop.
SoulCalibur V (Januar 2012) for 19,99 . King of Fighter's XIII for only 7,99
All new and not used of course. And many companies offer GOTY versions including all or most of the DLC for 30 bucks around 1 year after release.
+ there is always steam which its much harder competition for companies it seems and falling prizes down to 4€ for just 12 month old games which had a 49€ retail price first.

I don't think that deal works if you're buying used. Well, they didn't say anything about it, but it would be really weird if it did. Prices falling is good if you're just browsing for games that came out a while ago and which you didn't pick up, but when a given game comes out, you have to wait a year and a half more before playing it if you go that way.
Title: Re: Sony Stuff News Thread
Post by: "Bad News" Hoffmann on September 22, 2013, 04:52:20 pm
^^ I meant new games not the used ones yet, those are even cheaper
In my case i am selecting a bit more now, and buy less games at launch or short after because the goty editions + falling prices, there are still the "must have at launch" games like a new Tekken, KOF etc. but in general i wait longer now to save quite some bucks. Sony said the PS4 games would stick to 50-70@ launch prices.

The new games we're talking about are Assassin's Creed 4, Watchdogs, and CoD. And I'm not convinced that the deal will last a year until AC4's price goes down by half (apparently AC3 is already at 25€ on PS3). When they introduced that deal, it was for those who wanted to buy the game now and didn't want to wait until they could afford a PS4 / until the PS4 comes out, but would want to finish playing them on PS4 when it's available.

Uncool news from Sega though, Yakuza 5 won't be localized for western regions for sure. http://www.edge-online.com/features/an-audience-with-toshihiro-nagoshi/
Quote
Do you plan to eventually localise Yakuza 5 for the West?
We don’t have a plan for that at the moment. The Yakuza Studio team is a fixed size, and we have to choose between forging ahead with the next game or localising the one that just came out. This time the size of the game was so large, so rather than localising that game we chose to focus our manpower on the new game. But we get asked about it a lot. We get lots of complaints!
Actually that sounds a lot like they don't have anything against it and they might get on it - once Isshin is done. They just wanted to do Isshin and that was only one or the other, that doesn't mean they can't do the localization later, before they start working on a next game. Especially if he comments on the amount of complaints they get (without that they might never do it, but with that there's a chance). The info already came up a few days / weeks ago that they wouldn't do it, but if anything, this time it means there's still a slight chance, but later. I have hope again. I say fans need to keep asking to do it after Isshin.
Quote
When you localised Yakuza 4, you removed the Answer X Answer pop-culture quiz mini-game because you felt Westerners wouldn’t know the answers. Since Isshin has a historical setting, won’t that be even harder to localise?
Well, even many Japanese people might not know the history. But we understand when we see a game set in Ancient Rome, you know? So long as you reach them with the human drama, suits or kimono, it doesn’t matter. Japan or overseas, I’m not worried about that.
So Isshin could possibly be localised someday?
I’d definitely love to reach the whole world, haha, if we have the manpower and the money to do it.
And that is glorious. Everyone assumed Isshin was also out of question before that, especially when 5 got denied a localization.

Exactly, as days go by, and more and more people open their boxes, this will grow probably.
Also, it's not a matter of how many, it's the bad press they're gonna get, because some of the faulty consoles were sent to Gaming websites like IGN UK, where they specified they were not being 60 year old confused grandpas who didn't know how to make it work, but that they tried everything and NOPE.

My daughter and I got lucky with the Wii U on launch, but then again many underrate Nintendo anyway due to their lack of current Xbox and ps3 shooter exclusives that attracts 12 year olds and never realized Nintendo since 1983 was ahead of the game with innovation since the Light Gun Zapper and R.O.B the Robot for games like Gyromite opened many doors for these newer games and consoles anyway.
Just stating the facts, not making fanboy comments. lol

small number of consoles on day one being delivered broken isnt that surprising, at that point the QA is lower as there is a rush to output a large number of consoles.
the whole resolution and frame problems is a far worse issue, as is some of the reports of bricked consoles on both sides.

Fucking foxconn should be closed already if they are still treating workers like slaves there. I happily pay 50-100 more bucks for a game console if i know that the workers got treated well and paid enough to live from their income.

dunno if you ahve followed the news, but teh last thing I read was foxconn paying their workers something close to the usa minimum wage, and with china living costs being way below the usa or even mexico closing foxconn would be stupid under those conditions.

Yu Suzuki , inventor of the Virtua Fighter and Shenmue series will speak about the Shenmue Series and its development on the Game Developers Conference 2014 (March 2014) in San Francisco.
Mark Cerny, Game Designer and Lead System Architect of the PlayStation 4 will translate his speech which is sheduled for one hour.
It can be just a coincedence of course but....HOLY SHIT I AM GOING TO WET MY PANTS! if this means what i hope it means.
Sony mentioned that they held back a small number of Playstation 4 units in Europe for the case to have fast replacements for customers with failure consoles.
Smart move, good for the guys if the rumors about sabotaged ps4 units at foxcon are true.

They don't. The 22.8 is on PS3, the 3.4 and 3.3 are the Vita version, of course they're smaller. The PS3 version is only both at once, and the Vita version is only 2 separate games.

Is Sony going to go under... no. If Sony is going through issues, I'm sure they'll simply restructure. But, it is well known the Microsoft sold their consoles at a loss, but they have the money to do that. Sony isn't nearly as big, and it's not like the PS3 and PSV are turning in profits.

I've had bad experiences with higher end 100+ dollar headphones (none of which I owned) from Sony, and I guess Sony TVs aren't run of the mill but often times you can find similar quality for much lower prices so yes Sony is generally just expensive.
Title: Re: Sony Stuff News Thread
Post by: Bastard Mami on January 04, 2014, 06:18:27 pm
sony's are better quality, the biggest problem with sony stuff is that the difference in price is much bigger than the difference in quality, like a sony product is 30% thana competitor's, but it costs twice as much. imho sony stuff is buyable only when price is not a factor and quality is or when it's on sale.
Title: Re: Sony Stuff News Thread
Post by: Cazaki on January 11, 2014, 07:15:17 pm
This will either be extremely good, or terribly horrible, depending on how Sony executes this. If pricing becomes an issue this won't be used much at all, but if it works how I think it will, it'll be a system seller. There's also the possibility of a LOT of old titles missing, which in the PS1/2's case, would be catastrophic.

Streams will be good for games that can't yet be emulated imo. As PS3 and vita fade away in the next 5-10 years you'll be able to find some games you've been meaning to play but couldn't because of emulation issues. And those few PS2 games that you have issues emulating.
But that's just how I look at it.

Technical programmers from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe are currently on the Isle of Man studying the Mountain Course to see if it can be included in the next edition of the game due out on PlayStation 4.
A source inside the Isle of Man Tourism department told Bikesportnews.com today that if a deal can be struck, the 37.73-mile circuit could be included in Gran Turismo 7, which has yet to be given a release date.
Gran Turismo currently includes the Nurburgring but the Mountain course would be by far and away their biggest mapping project. Other British tracks currently in GT6 are Brands Hatch and Silverstone while Bathhurst Mount Panoramo was also included.

TOKYO — Sony Corp. reported a surprise eightfold jump in quarterly profit Thursday as sales got a perk from a cheap yen and its bottom line was helped by gains from selling buildings and its stake in a video-game maker.
Sony's April-June profit soared to 26.8 billion yen ($261 million) from 3.1 billion yen a year earlier. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had forecast a loss. Quarterly sales climbed nearly 6 percent to 1.81 trillion yen ($17.6 billion).
The Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate, which has been trying to reshape its business after years of losses, did well in its video games, movie and camera businesses, offsetting restructuring costs.

it should be noted that these are beta prices and they're supposed to drop later on, but i can't imagine a lot of people jumping in on this as it is, especially considering that it's a streaming thing
and i hope the pricing through the games becomes a bit more proportionate later on. $4.99 gets you 4 hours of metal gear solid 4, while $5.99 gets you a fucking week of dead rising 2. although i would assume that's largely up to whoever owns the game

Katsuhiro Harada aims for "immersion" with Summer Lesson. (http://gematsu.com/2014/09/harada-aiming-immersion-summer-lesson-vr-demo)
Quote
“There was one point where we tried to make use of Tekken characters in the game,” Harada explains. “But unless players can form a connection with them and feel intimate in a way, they won’t feel that immersion that’s key to the whole experience. Even in going with a female character, it’s difficult to model a person that’ll come across as cute to a variety of different people. What’s more, and this makes more sense once you’ve actually worn a VR display on your head, the visuals get warped a little like it’s going through a fish-eye lens, so there are a lot of challenges with making it all look really good.”
“You communicate with these AIs and raise them, resulting in their reactions to you changing day by day,” Harada concluded. “The characters aren’t just limited to girls. There are guys, too. And hell, if we really wanted to push it, we could even throw in a bear or something. Keep your eyes peeled on what’s to come.”

Post by: "Bad News" Hoffmann on September 27, 2014, 02:14:47 am
Sony's Virtual World, PlayStation Home, Closing Its Doors After 6 Years Sony renders PS3 owners Homeless early next year.
Those hoping that Sony's virtual world, PlayStation Home, might one day appear on PlayStation Vita or PlayStation 4 are in for some bad news. Not only will that never happen, but the PS3 version of the service will be shut down early next year in the United States,Canada, and Europe.
This news comes by way of posts from community managers in both North America and Europe, both of which attribute it to "a shifting landscape." Sony will no longer publish new content for Home after November 12. Users will have until about a month later, on December 3, to download any content they might want. A complete shutdown of the service will then happen on March 31, 2015. Fans who stick with Home in the months leading up until then will receive some free, unspecified content.
Today's news doesn't come as a complete surprise, as Sony Computer Entertainment Japan announced a shut down of Home's Asian services last month. Sony clarified with Game Informer at the time that Home in North America and Europe are handled separately, and would continue to operate in those regions despite SCEJ's announcement.
PlayStation Home was first revealed at GDC in 2007. Pitched as a free, Second Life-style virtual world where you'd create a virtual version of yourself that could have an apartment, meet up with friends, socialize, and watch movies or play games, Home never met the full potential of what was originally outlined. Although it attracted millions of users following its launch in 2008, numerous overhauls--including a relaunch in 2011 and the addition of game-themed content--never turned Home into what Sony hoped it would become.

I had a skateboarding ryu avatar.
Home was interesting , I checked all the e3 through it and it was pretty good to get stuff from games you enjoyed, their main problems were that a- it wasnt integrated enough, you never saw those avatars anywhere else, making them useless outside of home B- internet wasnt as seamless as the system would have required for it to be actually useful, leading to loading times too often.
It was still interesting and its disappointing to see it die instead having them develop it into some new direction.

Second Life "succeeded" because members there used it mainly for gambling and cybersex activities. When Linden Labs placed a ban on gambling, almost half the population ceased to connect, but the other half at least continued with the cybersexing.
Home didn't allowed either practices, hence why it was a failure from day 1.

They would get better results by simply reskinning the DC Universe Online MMORPG and distribute it as the new "Home" rather than trying to reinvent the wheel.
By the way, that demo looks like a PS4 port of Home Tycoon from the same developers, not as a full replacement of Home

Happy Birthday Playstation!
The first one was released 20 years ago when it was the 3rd December in Japan.
Seems a couple of new games will be shown in the next hours and days.
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/12/02/game-art-hq-playstation-20th-anniversary-tribute.aspx Some shitty website guy also put up a fan art collaboration by over 50 artists to celebrate the first Playstation and around 40 of its games. Of course thats not me *cough*
But feels good to see that big sites like GameInformer, Kotaku and moar write about it.

I didn't watch the stream but if the room started cheering and screaming, then suddenly went quiet, I suspect it was because of all the simultaneous heart attacks the fake-out must have caused.

100 percent free.
I have had plus since i bought my ps3, for a few years now, Ive gotten a lot of good games and deals out of it. from spelunky to whole batman games, to discounts on the walking dead and the wolf among us. The only thing i can say negative about it is that you will have a lot more out of it if you ahve a ps vita and a ps4 as well, since there are months where the good games coming out are on one of those.
you should also wait out until you are close to needing to renew it because sometimes they have sales on ps plus for a year.

I've only got a PS4 and am currently using the 2 day trial(why is it 2 days if you get it via a game but 14 via PSN?) but I'm getting paid tomorrow so I was wondering whether to get the year tomorrow.

Plus is pretty much mandatory now if you have a PS4, unless you don't intend to ever play online.
At least they have those free games monthly and discounts on certain games from time to time.
Otherwise, I would only have recommended it if you find yourself buying games often.

Sony announces PlayStation Now subscription plan It costs $20 a month
PlayStation Now has been around for several months now, but Sony is finally pulling the trigger on a subscription service for the rental program next week. Beginning January 13, PS4 users will have unlimited access to a catalog of over 1,000 PS3 games for $20 a month or $45 as part of a three-month package.
A free seven-day trial will be available when the program goes live, giving interested parties a chance to test out the PS Now if they haven't already. Sony plans to offer the subscription service on other PS Now enabled devices sometime in the future.

I think the pricing will seem more reasonable once the library grows to a reasonable amount. They should also include PS1 and 2 in there too. People would eat that up, I think.
FAKE EDIT: Giving it some more thought, maybe if all you have is a PS Now ready TV, and you skipped gen 7, it could hold a bit more value for you.

Any detail ? I have Journey, no PS4 but it's planned, is there a time limit ?
doesnt seem like it will go away, its a cross buy so if you have one of the games you have the second. I think they have done the same for all games from this company.
It says buy in the store but it has no price, it's a crossbuy. They consider that since you already actually bought the game once, the upgrade for a new console should be free.

New Danganronpa. New Danganronpa! That's really good news. PSVita and PS4 release, I wonder how they will make the PS4 game (as you don't have the touch panel which I use for some parts of the game). Ready to import it from USA if it never comes out in Europe, or if it comes out a lot later. It wouldn't make that much of a difference since they never translate the goddamn game to my language. I'm getting too used to this fact unfortunately. And like with the previous games, I will be spoiling myself with a livestream once it comes out, since I never learn my lesson.
There's also that Bloodborne expansion, in case you have the game. I still hope they make a PC version for the game, though with DS3 to come I can easily wait for it.

Eh, it looks choke full of clichés, if it's a QTE fest and gets the same reactions as Heavy Rain... Heavy Rain played on graphics and storytelling, if this has only graphics going for it, it's going to get stonewalled fast. Hopefully it has something else (like gameplay) to keep the interest up.

The Kara demo was praised for conveying a lot of details in a short demo, and for the technical prowess. Making that a full length story is nothing more than stereotypes that have been driven deep into the ground and are a dime a dozen. As soon as it was revealed, everyone tacked "... just like the Ex Machina movie and [some other games and movies] that came out very recently" at the end of the official announcement to make up their article. For this to turn into anything good, it'll need a very original view or twist, which is extremely hard to find these days in these stories, or some amazing gameplay features, which isn't all too likely seeing the studio's previous games. Without that, it'll only be some pretty thing that won't last much, people will play it once and then forget it at best (and at worst, call it a massive failure and a disgrace to video games for being nothing but QTEs), and it'll be seen as another game with big investment and poor return. It's at least 3 years late.

Basically. Even the most cliche game plots can be saved if the gameplay is good enough to salvage it on some level but with David Cage games, the story is honestly it's main goal and the true meat since otherwise, the gameplay for all of his games thus far...has been pretty much point and click with controllers and QTEs(which was worse in Beyond Two Souls since failing didn't even matter in terms of anything). So if the story sucks, this will be just another blow on his career honestly.

PS2 emulation on PS4 is confirmed: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-hands-on-with-ps4-playstation2-emulation unlike Xbox one's backward compatibility this seems to have been planed from the get-go (judging by what the auther said about the PS4 Star Wars bundle). if this emulator runs discs (unrestricted by regions) as well, then imo this is probably the best move sony have done. it also makes more sense to have it on the ps4, because it's way easier to develop for than the ps3.

Title: Bad News, Evolution Studios is no more.
Post by: "Bad News" Hoffmann on March 22, 2016, 04:39:02 pm
Regular reviews take place throughout SCE Worldwide Studios, ensuring that the resources that we have in such a competitive landscape can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects.
As part of this process we have reviewed and assessed all current projects and plans for the short and medium term and have decided to make some changes to the European studios structure.
As a result, it has been decided that Evolution Studio will close.
It is regrettable that this decision will lead to compulsory redundancies. We accept that this decision will mean that we risk losing high calibre staff but by focusing on other Studios that already have exciting new projects in development we believe we will be in a stronger position going forward and able to offer the best possible content of the highest quality for our consumers.
Where possible we will try to reallocate people onto other projects. If appropriate opportunities are not possible within the company, we will assist staff in any way we can, including speaking with local employers and with other development companies.
Evolution has been an important part of SCE Worldwide Studios for over 10 years – working on ground-breaking racing titles like WRC, Motorstorm and DRIVECLUB.
This decision should not take anything away from the great work that Evolution has produced.

more confirmations about the existence of the 4K PS4.5 model, and God of War 4 is possibly to be developed on it. http://wololo.net/2016/03/31/ps4-4k-more-rumors-surface-about-the-ps4-5/ not to worry tho, as it's seems all 4K games will run on the normal ps4 with "graphical compromises".

Holy Gennos.
I had the M.Bison avatar and when I posted this and this screenshot was posted by me because the funny headline there that said that "Bison dollars" would be worthless.
It was a joke around a month ago. Nothing else. edit: Guess why I wrote "That's blasphemy" at that day. edit end. No news were delivered there, it was a joke by a guy with a M.Bison avatar who used to post stupid M.Bison quotes about Tuesdays.
There is Just No Point bringing that up in a Sony News thread where someone replied to a post from you where you write about more confirmation when just nothing was ever confirmed.

news about the PS4.5 were just rumors, nothing confirmed. now we get a trusted source now that says the thing is legit and there are SDKs being given to developers to make games for it and among those games is god of war 4 (which coincidentally just has some concept arts released for it). your reasons for dismissing it are stupid. "it's old" i told you that it was not mentioned here and just wanted people here to know about it. you made fun of the source just because, and i told you that it is a trusted NeoGaf source but nope more dismissing for no reason (even though most of their source have given accurate info time and time again). and i know what you're gonna do now. you're gonna obtusely dismiss it more because that's what you do.

(the specs are in the article) sony said that they will not develop any sort of exclusives for it.

You mean beside the 4K which is everything it was meant to do ? And the extra processing power to go with it. If you don't get the Pro, there's nothing that the Pro can play that the regular won't be able to play, no, but.... the point is the 4K display that the regular one can't put out. It's like the 3DS/New 3DS except there won't be any game exclusive to the Pro. That's exactly what we knew it would do.
Oh, yeah, of course. || V

EA making another average at best game, what a surprise, my heart nearly stopped upon seeing that.
Most devs are gonna use the extra power to push more polygons because the public doesn't believe there's a difference between 30 and 60 fps. But they'll notice realistic eyeballs.

Title: Re: Sony Stuff News Thread
Post by: Long John Killer on September 08, 2016, 07:51:34 pm
It really doesn't matter that much when playing. When put next to each other, sure you notice a difference because there is one. When just playing and focusing on your game though, its irrelevant. A nice bonus, but not game changing.
Nothing I've played that's been at 30FPS when 60 was a possibility has been a deal breaker. Heck, Halo 5 forcing in 60 FPS to cut out other content almost was a deal breaker because of the 60 FPS. Should have avoided it anyways due to that god-awful campaign, but oh well.
Anyways, I've been holding out of a PS4 until these announcements to see what was new. Still not sure what to get, now that there's two options. Considering I was also in the market for a tv, since I've been stuck using my computer monitor for everything, might be leaning to a Pro. Just glad on that terabyte hard drive, Xbox One's 500 GB went by in a flash, uninstalling and reinstalling just to switch games often sucks.

April 2017 PlayStation Plus Lineup
PS4
10 Second Ninja Curses 'n Chaos Drawn to Death Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
PS3
Invizimals: the Lost Kingdom Alien Rage: Extended Edition
Jak 1-3 and Jak X are getting on the PS4 port trend. Which is odd for the first three, as the PS3 already has an updated if not perfect version of those ones, why not push those ones up to PS4 like Kingdom Hearts is doing? Jak X getting any attention since PS2 days is awesome though, I loved that game. Real question though is if it'll still have Ratchet guest starring, or is that no longer an option?

Title: Re: Sony Stuff News Thread
Post by: rednavi -RETIRED on April 27, 2017, 12:16:40 am
That depends where the praises come from. The overall opinion from telltale fans is that they went downhill since after the first Walking Dead game (With the exception of the Borderlands one which seems to be well received overall, especially because Anthony Burch barely had any hand on it) with the whole "your choices don't actually matter" crap.
Their engine is too clunky and the animations and scenes look like shit as result. It only takes the first episode of the Guardians game to see how much bad animation hurts the storytelling.

Title: Re: Sony Stuff News Thread
Post by: Long John Killer on April 27, 2017, 03:53:59 am
I'll second that Tales from the Borderlands was their best work yet.
Not for nothing, there's wiggle room in the diversity that encompasses all video games for those designed for a single play through to appreciate the story they wanted to tell in that mixed up area between reading a novel and watching a movie with some interactions. I'd be hard pressed to say after playing Limbo I felt the need to play it again. But its enjoyability that one time and affect playing it has had a more lasting impression that re-runs through the latest Mega Man collection. And I like the Blue Bomber. Just for different reasons.
Or we can just say we're all just different people with different tastes and leave it at that? I'd be interested in this Abzu game at least, and recommend Borderlands for anyone with a sense of humor and likes a little drama for those who played the main games and know the returning characters.

alot of progress has been made on rpcs3 the ps3 emulator. the developers are now utilizing vulkan api to get a much better performance out of it
of course, not all games work, but they've managed to make 140+ games run at a very playable level. you'd obviously need a powerful pc to run it. now we can finally put the "the ps3 will never get emulated because it's architecture is complex" argument to rest.

I'm just tired of these paltry offerings when I know Sony could do better. Seems I'm being entitled over some free games, but these "free" games are factored into the PSN Plus price. So when they offer some random indie game I never heard about because it made no impact, I can't help but feel I'm getting ripped off. This is made worse when you look over at Microsoft's offerings and they're honestly much better. Oh and supposedly the free games are supposed to have scored at least 75 in metacritic, but I've checked from time to time and there have been plenty of times that has not been the case. Shit like this is what makes me wish that they would just offer a discounted version that just gives the online multiplayer and not give the "free" games and discounts, but I know that's not going to happen so I'm just going to have to accept that they'll keep ripping me off every month.
Edit: No, I'm not expecting a AAA game every month, but it would be great if they threw us a bone a little more often.

Here's all the info so far on PS5 on Reddit.
Quote
his is a collection of the information we have so far on the PlayStation 5. Index 1. Case design and Cooling system 5. The SSD, Flash controller and I/O COMPLEX 9. HDMI, USB ports and others 2. Titles confirmed for PS5 6. CPU and GPU 10. Peripherals 3. Physical Media 7. Tempest Engine (Audio) 11. PlayStation sizes 4. Backwards Compatibility 8. New controller 12. Footnotes
1. Case design and Cooling system
The PS5 uses a black/white futuristic design. There is currently no confirmation that there will be any other color options on launch, but for the future this is to be expected. With its size it will be the largest of the PlayStation family. Like previous models, it can be set up both horizontal and vertical.
https://imgur.com/gallery/Ui66YNN
There will be 2 models at launch, the “regular” PS5 and a PS5 Digital Edition. The digital model has no 4K Blu-ray drive, and is therefore sleeker than the regular PS5. There is no other difference between them.
Before the final reveal, patents and leaks of the developers’ kit gave an insight in Sony’s work on creating a new innovative cooling solution to address the noise/heating issues from the cooling system of the PS4/PS4 Pro. It’s still unknown how exactly the new cooling system works. For this we need to wait for the tear-down video for more information.
2. Titles confirmed for PS5:
For a list of all confirmed titles, see Wikipedia.
3. Physical Media
Physical PS5 games will be distributed on 4K Blu-Ray discs called PS5 game discs with up to 100GB of data. The Digital Edition does not have a 4K Blu-Ray drive to use these discs and will be dependent on games to be purchased from the PS Store (or via code).
4. Backwards Compatibility
The PS5 is fully compatible with PSVR.
The overwhelming majority of the PS4 4000+ titles will be playable on the PS5*. In March they already tested the top 100 PS4 titles.
You can play together with PS4 users online.
Save games can already be transferred between consoles, so it’s safe to assume this will work exactly the same for PS5. Meaning through PS Plus (cloud saves) or USB drive.
Sony has not yet confirmed if the PS5 will or will not be BC with PS1/PS2/PS3 games. It’s assumed the PS5 will not be BC with PS1/PS2/PS3 games.
*There is no reason to think this applies only to discs or digital versions. For disc games, you do need the PS5 with a blu-ray drive
5. The SSD, Flash controller and I/O COMPLEX
The biggest request from developers for the PS5 was a fast SSD. The engineering team found that a very fast SSD can mean a lot of difference in game performance, both graphic fidelity and game design, so not just loading times. For this reason, they invested a lot in a fast SSD and dedicated hardware to eliminate all the I/O bottlenecks.
The SSD is a custom 12 chip/channel M.2 design, here they added 6 priority levels in the custom flash controller instead of the maximum of 2 for regular M.2 drives. The SSD has 5.5GB/s Raw data transfer speed.
The I/O is done completely by dedicated hardware, nothing is using any CPU power. Most notable are:
The Hardware decompressor which allows game data to be loaded from the SSD at 22GB/s, with 8-9 GB/s being the norm. Which otherwise would require about 8-9 Zen cores of CPU power.
Coherency engines to optimize caching.
GPU cache scrubbers, that clean up cached data on the GPU itself to improve efficiency and ensure the cache isn't filled with redundant data.
Co-processor for SSD input-output bypassing file read bottlenecks.
Another co-processor for memory mapping.
On chip SRAM for faster access to cached memory.
Dedicated DMA (direct memory access controller further reducing data-streaming bottlenecks.
To optimize price vs performance, they used 1 chip for each of the 12 channels it has. So, 12 times 512Gbit (chip size) equals 6144Gbit, and that divided by 8 (bits to bytes) equals 768GiB which equals 825GB (824.6GB). Information about GB and GiB here.
The SSD will make the use of duplicating assets for streaming no longer necessary, this combined with the use of Kraken as the default compression will reduce the install size of games relatively speaking.
There is a PCIE 4.0 M.2 port inside the PS5 for storage expansion. However, an SSD to be used in the PS5 will require to be much faster than 5.5 GB/s to compensate for the lack of 6 priority levels in PCIE 4.0 M.2 SSD’s. Sony will be making a list of drives compatible with PS5.
6. CPU and GPU
The CPU has 8 Zen 2 cores with variable frequencies up to 3.5Ghz with SMT, and shares it’s power budget with the GPU via AMD’s SmartShift.
The GPU uses a customized GPU from AMD based on the RDNA2 architecture, and so supports the RDNA2 features*. It has 36 Compute Units (CU), the amount of Render Output Units (ROP’s) or cache size is unknown. The GPU is clocked at a max 2.23Ghz clock rate. More info how the clock rate works here.
The PS5 has a unified memory architecture using 16GB of GDDR6 RAM memory, with a Bandwidth of 448GB/s.
Keeping in mind the minimum CU’s for the easiest BC and cost efficiency, Sony has opted for a lower CU count (36 exactly like the PS4 Pro) but higher clock speed. This because the clock speed effects both the CU’s, ROP’s (rasterization) and cache speeds. RDNA1 based GPU’s have has seen better performance with higher clock speeds than CU’s, for more info see my post here.
*Not every RDNA2 function has been specifically confirmed, for example VRS. They have confirmed RayTracing and the programmable Geometry Engine.
7. Tempest Engine (Audio)
It seems that Sony has chosen not to use/license existing technologies such as Dolby Atmos for 3D audio in games. This because of the limited amount of sound sources supported. Although they might still support it for 4K Blu-Ray playback.
For 3D audio in games Sony has created the Tempest Engine which supports ray traced 3D audio with HRTF support.
The PS5 will launch with 5 standard HRTF profiles, and there looking for a way to create you own profile based on your ears. A way they might do this, is use a camera to make a recording of your ears.
It is best used with headphones, but they already support stereo speakers for 1 person/location. They will be expanding support to surround sound systems.
The chip powering the Tempest Engine, uses a customized CU. Which was modified in such a way as to make it very close to the SPU’s in the Cell processor used in the PlayStation 3.
8. New controller
The new controller for the PS5 is called the DualSense controller. It features a new design and new features like haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a built-in microphone array. The share button has been replaced with the “Create” button.
The DualSense charges via USB-C, with the port located on top of the controller or “wirelessly” with the connectors on the bottom.
It has a microphone mute button beneath the PlayStation logo/home button and will still have a built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack.
We have not yet seen the back of the controller accurately, it seems the controller will not be featuring back paddles. The bottom is partially in view here.
9. HDMI, USB ports and others Confirmed Ports Information 1 x HDMI 2.1 Supports up to 8K, up to120hz and VRR. 1 x USB 3.x type A ports On the front side Explanation on USB 3.X Generations here. 1 x USB 3.x type C port Front side
The PS5 does not have an analog audio/video output, there is however a 3.5mm audio Jack in the DualSense controller.
No details are known for the I/O on the rear side of the PS5, so there are no details yet for additional USB ports, Ethernet, TOSLINK (optical audio), and the Auxiliary port (used for the PS4 Camera).
There is also no information on what WiFi and Bluetooth version the PS5 will support.
10. Peripherals
The PS5 will be able to use external HDD/SSD’s for PS4 games and storage expansion, PS5 games however will need to be transferred to an internal SSD to play.
Sony has announced new wireless headphones called the Pulse 3D Wireless Headset, a new Camera for the PS5, dual "wireless" controller charger and a new media remote. There is no information on the exact specifications of this new HD Camera for the PS5, or if it will be required for PSVR.
It isn’t known which PS4 peripherals besides PSVR are compatible, but for PSVR to work, the DualShock 4 as the new DualSense controller has no light bar for the camera to track. The Move controllers and Aim controllers are also expected to work.
11. PlayStation sizes: Console Dimensions w × h × l Volume* PS5 (370 x 90 x 380 mm)** (12.7 L)** PS3 274 x 99 x 325 mm 8.82 L PS3 Slim 290 x 66 x 290 mm 5.55 L PS4 Pro 295 × 55 × 327 mm 5.31 L PS4 275 x 53 x 305 mm 4.45 L PS2 178 x 79 x 302 mm 4.25 L PS3 Super Slim 230 x 60 x 290 mm 4.00 L PS4 Slim 265 × 39 × 288 mm 2.98 L PlayStation 185 x 45 x 260 mm 2.16 L PS One 144 x 38 x 193 mm 1.06 L PS2 Slim 152 x 28 x 230 mm 0.98 L
https://i.redd.it/zttaoq9tph451.png
*calculations do not take the shape into account, here the 3 dimensions are calculated as a rectangular box.
**Dimensions of the PS5 are deduced roughly from available pictures and guesses, and therefore not accurate.
12. Footnotes:
There is no word on pricing yet, or the difference in price between the regular and digital edition
The exact release date is unknown, so far Sony has said: Holiday 2020
The PS5 has a complete overhaul of the user interface, but very little is known how this looks like
Astro's Playroom will be installed by default.
There are a few assumptions, when I did, it is an extremely likely one

PS5 preorders were a mess. The third wave is coming but no update of when it will start.
In Japan, buttons are swapped from O to X https://www.siliconera.com/ps5-controller-buttons-will-swap-functions-in-japan-x-will-now-confirm/

Two things:
1. Sony is discontinuing buying/renting tv shows/movies on PS at the end of August (https://blog.playstation.com/2021/03/02/playstation-store-to-discontinue-movie-and-tv-purchases-and-rentals/)
2. Play at Home returns and has Ratchet and Clank (https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP9000-CUSA01047_00-RATCHETPS4000000) for free until the end of March.
