As heartbreaking as this is to hear, he was getting into his upper 90's so it's sadly not entirely unexpected. No one can say he didn't have a good run, though. Maybe one of the best.
Excelsior, good sir. Your contributions to the world will never be forgotten, nor equaled.

A larger than life presence, a grand full life lived. I mourn the passing but I can only be glad that the man lived such a long life.
Many thinkpieces will be made in the coming years as they have in the last few of how much fame Stan Lee deserved because our binary society can only look at things in terms of dos or did not, yes or no.
Stan deserved every bit of it. He campaigned to put Marvel out there, he made it seem like the line that the cool kids were reading, he made you feel special for Making Yours Marvel and the talent did the rest. Stan Lee changed the comic book industry and the effects can be felt even to today.
So while I will write this with a heavy heart I will write it with the excitement it deserves, the excitement he gave it.

Stan Lee was a visionary. He made the Uncanny X-Men human, Spider Man your friendly neighbor, Captain America a symbol, the Fantastic 4 a family, and the Avengers heroes. He made Marvel... marvelous. Thank you so much for making all of us true believers. R.I.P.

May you rest in peace, Stan Lee, last of Marvel's remaining titans. You gave us a wild ride. I shall devote this day to you by rereading Silver Surfer: Parable, one of his greatest works of the modern era.

Stan Lee is one of those cultural legends whose accomplishments makes him equal to other legends like Walt Disney. Because of him, Marvel was built and beloved figures like Spiderman and the X-Men are known throughout the world, even to people who really do not touch comics. My personal first exposure to comics comes from Spiderman and he still remains one of my favorite Superheroes.
May you and your contributions to the world be remembered now and always, Stan Lee.

So how do we remember Stan Lee? For a man whose contributions are so undeniably vast and important, the immediate reaction is to remember him as a hero. Lee's success would never have happened without the people that he erased and sometimes exploited to get to where he was. While we remember Lee for the empire he built, it's also vital to remember the people who helped him. Like all human beings, Lee was flawed, but his passion and advocacy for comics was vital in keeping the medium alive. The characters he helped create often represented the best of us, even when he himself couldn't.
Perhaps the most appropriate way to respect his impact is to remember the whole ambitious man, including his mistakes, and to work to create a better landscape for creators, to make sure they're compensated and credited appropriately. Even in eulogizing him, we can try and live up to possibly the most famous words credited to Lee: "With great power comes great responsibility."
