I know it's not really a perfect solution, but have you tried using Waifu2x until bigger versions are out? U can get some pretty lossless results with the right options selected.

Wait what? Yes i did that for the DBFZ ports but suddenly after some update to the site it did no longer upscale anti aliasing [You know, the blurry edge] and end up with horrible squared edges.
Can you link me and show me what settings you use?
