So we begin 2016 with a major KOFE announcement. Morrigan will be joining the cast. I have spoken to Metal Warrior and he's interested in working on her. Since it'll be a lot of conversion work, now begins the planning.

Metal Warrior did a phenomenal job with his original SNK style conversion. I did adjustments to the original sprite as I felt it needed to be little more "realistic" in the SNK style proportion-wise and a bit taller (she should be around Shiki's height). So longer legs, thicker waist, thinner legs and smaller bust. It'll be important to get sprite 0,0 down as she will be the basis for all the other sprites to come.

Color-wise she has 5 colors for the skin, 4 for the arm bands, 5 for the leggings, 4 colors for the hair, 3 colors for the feathers, 4 colors for the bodysuit and wings and 2 colors for the inside of the wings.

Merry Turn

Looks nice! I take it Aura Soul Fist and Cardinal Blade will be like the ES versions from Darkstalkers?

Also, any chance of Demitri coming along too? You could use his SvC sprites.

Glad to see your interest. I'm personally excited to begin work on her. my second fav female character after Cammy.

The DMs are the ES versions of her moves a la CVS2. Unfortunately no Demitri for KOFE. Midnight Bliss would be a nightmare... Just one rep from Capcom's 2 main fighter franchises. :)

She will have a more realistic style to her in terms of her move set. No "bat jetpack". Work hasn't really begun yet aside from trying to nail down the base sprite and conceptualization. More will come soon though. ;)

Shame about that, but understandable. That'd be a lot of characters to do that for. Still, would've been interesting to see just what ya'll would've came up with for each character heh. ^^;

That's Dimitri's main gimmick though... it wouldn't be the same if we had him in there but no midnight bliss...

it would be like having a stripper at the party but she can't take her top off.

Yes it will be a run. We'll more like a constant dash. Kinda like Chonrei and Chonshu or Orochi.

Trying to avoid this from becoming a Capcom vs SNK game. 1 Street Fighter, 1 Darkstalker. 72 characters is my magic number. ;) The rest is tutorial fodder.

When you consider that he only had it in 1 out of the 3 games in his source series, not really.  Even mechanically, it's basically just a less useful version of another super he's always had since his debut. But I understand not wanting to put in too many guest characters, so I'm fine with that reasoning.

Would've also been hard to come up with a real distinct moveset too for Demitri. I look at Morrigan as a "Ken" to Akuma's "Ryu".  They are the first real "fireball, dp, hurricane" characters. The AOF team had slight variations to their moves to make them stand out.

We'll be starting Morrigan soon. :)

We decided not to animate anything in the legs. Morrigan will have her "sparkling" effect in her stance, so that should offset the static legs. The work is phenomenal MW. Thanks for keeping this post up to date too. :)

Sorry, by basics I meant walking, jumping, crouching. Still haven't done hitstates, attacks or anything else of that sort and we still have to do other basics like her "run" which I'm not too sure how to handle yet, her retreat and her dodges.

Gethits are a pain in the ass, that's why I do them first.
In CvS1 Morrigan used the dash animation just moving forward to make her run, you can make it that way to leave her accurate to some representation she had.

That was my first thought too, it would go well with her walk animations.

Unless you guys plan on giving her new walk animations, where she's not floating. In that case a classic run would look really good on her.

There is plenty of moves that can use this kind of physics stuff, but certainly not flying/walking anim IMO.

Anyway, this project will require a lot of work (50% done)

Morrigan now has her "sparkles" both when standing and ducking. I made the code so that the sparkles die off if you start moving, instead of instantly disappearing. They also travel lower when she is ducking. Her p2 color is a quick slap together. Once I have the turn animations, I'll post a vid. :)

We're now working on her dashes and her crouch hits and turns. After that, we'll do her sidesteps and blocks. She'll get there. Great effort on the part of Metal Warrior on spriting her so far.

I'm not opposed to giving Morrigan a second snd, but my preference for her primary voice is her original. I'll have all the Capcom classic voices for the Capcom characters. :)

Looks good guys. We're just playing around with some effects on her body to see if we can make her look a little more like she's fighting against the wind. I think the dash was one of the trickier things to make since we're trying to reinvent it really...

I gave her her stance effects because a couple of characters in SNK games also have stance effects. SNK doesn't typically do walking effects, so I haven't included it. Plus the dust effects would stand out as not being in the SNK artstyle.

Generally SNK characters don't have effects in their walking animations, so I'll leave it be for now. I don't want to overburden her with effects. One thing Morrigan will have is a mid air dash. So she does lose her ability to dash upward, but she'll be able to zip across the screen briefly in the air. You'll be able to attack in the dash so it should make for an interesting dynamic.

MW is currently finishing the rest of the core hitstates (the knockdown stuff) and an Intro with Lilith. Hopefully we'll have update video to show in the next month or two. Once those are done we'll begin the basic attacks.

But (sorry if I'm being too much naturalistic) just thinking that wings should have a larger movement.

Ah k, gotcha. We'll use the existing animation as a placeholder for now and come back to it. It looks pretty good in game. Let me put up the next video in the coming weeks, and see what everyone think from the in game perspective. :)

Sorry for such a long delay on updating here. It's been hard to find time. A new vid will be coming soon. Just a few more sprites needed. Anyway, here's the classic MVC intro that this Morrigan will be using. We'll need bats, but we'll figure that out later. All props to MW who is just doing a fantastic job with this project.

If you look at the stats, Lilith is a bit shorter than Morrigan. Wasn't reflected in the game since she was a palette swap. Lilith will be a touch shorter and a touch thiner.

Projectile will be taken from Darkstalkers to honor the classic feel of the character and blend with the rest of the game's sprites. :)

So with MW and I trying to rush through Iori to fill the huge gap that he leaves in the roster,  Morrigan has been a bit idle. But we only have the "get up" animations, guards and guard crush left and we can start making some attacks lol. Once I have the get up animations, I'll post another vid.

Progress report on Morrigan SNK. So, MW has finished all the basic movements. We're now starting basic attacks. I expect this part to be a lot easier because we don't have to create as many moves from scratch. We're just finish up the KOFE collapses, then we'll be able to dedicate a lot more time to her. Stay tuned.

Morrigan's basic attacks will probably be done later this year. Standing, standing close, jumping, crouching, throws. And we are still spriting other KOFE characters at the same time. More progress will be provided once we've completed a few moves.

So with all the collapse KOs and last misc fixes, Morrigan's development had stalled for a bit. Happy to say we're back on track now. MW will start working on the last of the jumping and crouching attacks and then we'll just have the standing attacks and we'll be good to make another video. :)

In the meantime, here's a peak at her kick throw. Those with a keen eye will recognize it as Lilith's throw. There are subtle Lilith references in her basic attacks to show the "merged" nature of the two.

Hello, Morrigan looks great, but taking away her fly is can be considered way too much of an alteration. Yes, she would look interesting and more akin to KOF if she were to run, however a reason provided was that it stopped her from zoning, is completely incorrect. Morrigan's fly is very dangerous, it can do ambiguous crossups behind opponents, leading into lots of knockdown mixups and big combos. Taking her jet away just wouldn't make any sense characteristically and would be major nerf to her mobility. This is just my personal two cents.



here's an example of why Morrigan's flying jet is better than running (for her)

Imo, would still be nice to see a KOF Morrigan do a fly instead of a run. Or, you could offer both options if you know how to code something like that

Thanks for the feedback extravagant. For now, she'll just have the dash. It wasn't to stop her from zoning and I do understand it's value in games. It's more like it's not something that matches the KOFE style I'm going for. You can say she's a hybrid with Lilith who didn't have flight either characteristically. She is the only character that can do a mid air dash as a compromise, so we'll see what that does for gameplay. Keep in mind that Capcom characters, with their movesets are already fairly buffed compared to SNK characters in KOFE. We'll see what happens when MW finishes the specials soon.
