Title: Expanding MUGEN Class - The Mechanics Master Thread
Post by: JustNoPoint on April 11, 2016, 11:14:34 pm
I want us to try to expand on things a bit. In deciding to expand MUGEN Class or make a new board it seemed better just to expand here.

For now we won't be adding anything. I'm still quite busy moving and making some home repairs. I anticipate I should be back near full force come March. So till I have more time to get some threads started and get this ball rolling I want us to use this thread to make a list of mechanics in fighting games.

The intent is to make a thread that explains what each mechanic is. And hopefully get some coding applications for them as well but the priority is to have all the mechanics explained so we can link to them here like we do the Docs here when users have specific questions. This forum has been around since 2001 and we still don't have an optimal list/explanation of system mechanics. Closest we have is this thread. (http://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/fighting-game-character-terminology-1945.0.html)

Feel free to correct me if I mess up on terminology or something could be named better in general. Also if I should combine one let me know. There are a lot of mechanics that are similar aside for something kinda small. Example a friendship or babality would still fall under Fatality.

So please list mechanics.
I'll start.

Guard Push from Marvel vs. Capcom would be nice. :3 nevermind.

I'd labelled it Push Block
Title: Push Block, Guard Push, Advancing Guard

Here's an example of how I was considering making a thread.

In a nutshell while you are blocking you initiate a command that pushes the attacker away from you to give yourself space and reduce pressure.

Typically while blocking you would push 2 Punches at the same time. (Marvel vs Capcom 2 & 3, Skull Girls)
In Vampire Savior you press P rapidly.

More in depth details

Then if I had it available or wanted to write one up I'd give some example coding or leave it without and hope myself or someone else adds code examples later on.

I'll make some threads, but I doubt they'll be as well written as what you have.
I thought it would be a general post about it, then maybe a code example. I'll probably start with my favorite and you can edit it however.
Maybe add a "Mechanics" Icon??

Yeah, I'll be making an icon for them. I think this should be my last week of moving and working on the house 24/7. so hopefully I can get this ball rolling a bit more soon.

Don't see Trip Guard listed.

It's the ability to block immediately after landing. Some games have it (SFA3), others don't (Street Fighter 2), and some have both conditionally (CvS2, SF4).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see Crush Counter here.

Generally, it's the ability to counter (punish) your opponent's whiffed attacks with a hard hitting move, mainly the HP or HK varieties. After hitting them with HP or HK, they are stunned motionless for a brief moment or launched in the air, in which you're able to hit-confirm or just combo during the stunned/launched phase.

I'm sure I missed a ton :P
Added both btw

I do still intend to get on this. I'm still really busy. Not with moving and house work now. But working tons of extra hours/days.

I can't find Small Jump anywhere. D:

I also think it could just go along with Super and Air Jump, saves clutter.

Edited the first post, and this post. Saves clutter ;)

Oh, sorry. I was going to add it. I see ODB already handled that.

Thank you for adding more mechanics! :D

So yeah, I'll be adding entries whenever I can. I don't like how unproductive I've been over the past month, so this a way to make myself some kind of useful.

I'm also gonna edit my older entries as well when I get the chance, I feel there's information I left out.

I promise I'm going to add more too. I've been literally using pretty much all free time to code Piccolo for a X-mas release. With all the knowledge I gained I'll be able to add a lot of coding examples too.

Thank you for helping!
