A few people showed interest in how I made some super portraits so I figured I'd stop being a whore about it and share some of my skills in this department. I'm going to design these tutorials based on it no one has ever made one before, even in the slightest way. Please excuse the steps that you my already know of. These tutorials are also being written is if you have Photoshop CS2 and Paint Shop Pro X2.
First off, "POTS"-style.
Keep in mind that I've only ever seen his stuff in motion. I've never analyzed first hand how he made them.
Step 1: Choosing a picture
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty
Yes. First and foremost you need to pick an appropriate picture to modify. I suggest trying to find find one with the largest resolution as possible. Sizing down is always better then having to resort to sizing up. Though there are tools/plugins you can get that are designed for image expansion without quality loss.
In this case, I'll be using this pic of Taokaka, because, let's face it, BlazBlue characters are coming to MUGEN at some point soon:
The original size of the picture is 992x1000
Step 2: Cleaning out the background
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty
This, in my opinion, is the most tedious part of any portrait creation, especially with large pictures such as the one I'm using now. I used Photoshop for the cleaning. Its also better to do this step in color in most cases as its easier to tell edges apart.
Most people forget to clean the edges properly and end up with outlines around what should be solid black. I always use the Pencil tool. I'd suggest the same but that's totally up to you.
Use a larger Pencil brush size to black out the larger portions of unused art and use a smaller brush for inner corners. Just take the extra time to go around the edges and solidify everything that you don't want in the portrait.
Step 3: Grayscale
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty
Time to grayscale the image:
You should also change the levels so that the brightest parts of the picture are brighter and the darker parts are, well, darker.
This is the outcome:
Lots of contrast.
Step 4: Applying Effects
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty
Copy/Paste into Paintshop Pro X2. I've found that in many cases, PSP is better at applying effects like blurring and gives more control over the final product. Navigate the menus shown below to get to the Radial Blur modifier:
You pretty much have free range here. You'll want to set it to "Zoom", set the cursor in the preview over your point of interest, adjust the strength of the blur and also modify the "Protect Center" adjuster, which will allow a portion of the blur to remain un-blurred.
Apply it and you'll have this:
Copy/Paste back into Photoshop over the existing grayscaled picture you had before, then adjust the opacity of the blurred version(80%-90%).
The reason for doing this is to allow the clear version to be seen. It gives it a neat effect.
Step 5: Applying Colors
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty
You'll need to make the picture able to be colored so first, make the file RGB, then merge the layers(optional):
Some people might think this part is hard initially, but its rather simple once you get used to playing with it. Navigate the menus below until you get to "Gradient Map":
Again, just play with the colors as you see fit.
In this case I'm modifying both layers as opposed to merging them and editing a single layer.
Top Layer:
Bottom Layer:
Together(plus red eyes >:3 ):
Step 6: Finalizing
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty
Once done, merge the layers(if you dealt with multiple layers), size down accordingly, index the colors, and you have yourself a pretty sexy looking super portrait.

This tutorial will show you how to create a pseudo-MVC2 super portrait. I'll be providing a file to use with this one because I believe it works well enough that many people may find it convenient. Therefore, this will be a rather short tutorial. If you'd like me to make a more detailed tutorial to make them more accurate to the original game, I can do so.

Step 1: Choosing a picture

Yes. First and foremost you need to pick an appropriate picture to modify. I suggest trying to find find one with the largest resolution as possible. Sizing down is always better then having to resort to sizing up. Though there are tools/plugins you can get that are designed for image expansion without quality loss.
In this case, I'll be using this pic of Jon Talbain, because he's awesome:
The original size of the picture is 660x950
Step 2: Placing and Cleaning out the Background
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty
This, in my opinion, is the most tedious part of any portrait creation, especially with large pictures such as the one I'm using now. I used Photoshop for the cleaning.
Place your picture on top of the bottom layer and use the Eraser(I use it in "Pencil Mode") to clean off the edges. I also use the Magic Wand here because its on a white background.
(http://www.hoshi.trinitymugen.net/Tutorials/MVC2/step2-1.jpg)(http://www.hoshi.trinitymugen.net/Tutorials/MVC2/step2-2.jpg)(http://www.hoshi.trinitymugen.net/Tutorials/MVC2/step2-3.jpg)
Most people forget to clean the edges properly. Use the Eraser on "Brush Mode" to get rid of those noticeable pixels.
Step 3: Finalize
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty
Once done, merge the layers, clear off the pink area on all layers, index the colors, and you have yourself a pretty awesome looking super portrait.

It works a lot better than most people think. Others usually go directly to "Screen" or "Overlay" which in this case doesn't work well at all.

wonderful tutorials bro! :sugoi:

I'd also like to encourage users who find these tutorials useful to post their results or post suggestions for other types of portraits that you might like tutorials for. Super/Hyper or any other types. :)

After Luis Alejandro requested a BBB Super Portrait tutorial, I tried a few things out and came up with a fairly painless way to do it. I also doubled up the resolution to a 640 pixel height. I also am providing, yet again, a Photoshop document that is used in this tutorial. This tutorial is made only using Photoshop. I'll also be cutting menu shots out for the most part and I'll be using keyboard shortcuts. I got lazy on this one. :P

Edit:
In my personal opinion, this tutorial seems to work the best with 2D styled artwork with very visible and solid outlines. Keep this in mind when choosing a picture to modify
I'm using a picture of Peach. Because she's hawt.

Time to invert the picture's colors. To do so Select All ( Ctrl+A ), then Invert ( Ctrl+I )
Duplicate the layer, then change the top layer's mode to Linear Dodge. This will brighten up the overall white areas.
While the top layer is highlighted, merge the layers ( Ctrl+E )
Adjust the Levels to get rid of most/all of the extra shades that aren't needed.
Image > Adjustments > Levels

Using the Pencil tool, clean off extra bits that you don't want in the portrait:
You're left with a brighter, inverted picture.

Place/Resize your picture in between the two layers in the template file.

Confirm the top layer is set to "Multiply", then Merge the Top layer with your picture:
Clear off the excess parts of the [now] Top layer:

Stolen from one of POTS' tutorials:
6- Now it just needs to get some color back, but first of all remove the image from greyscale and convert it to 8bit colors. Never (ever) convert the image to 8bit colors after adding color, because if you do it while the image is still just a bunch of grey shades then there will be zero color loss.
Then to add color just adjust Color Balance.
Additionally, here's the link to the full tutorial to see it in context:

thanks, too bad I suck at color balance, I may just use PS instead :P (Have to get it first)

Good-lookin-Out!! :sugoi:
I totally understand this Tutorial....
Thanks for FINALLY sharing your Jedi abilities lol

Hoshi, can you do a tutorial on how to make MvC1 hyper portraits?

Hoshi, can you do a tutorial on how to make MvC1 hyper portraits?
That unfortunately is out of my skill set and would require an incredible amount of time to explain and experiment with. I've never dabbled in it before, but all they are are large sprites as opposed to manipulated photos. Sorry I can't help with that. :/
-
Lol I think he just means a portrait with the black outline
-
sorry for bump but with the mvc2 portrait tutorial am i supposed to get color loss when i index the colors? i keep getting color loss and it ruins the hyper portrait. >:(
-
Depends, you using a jpg to do it? The MvC2 portraits didn't go over the colour limit as far as i know so it's possible you're using a jpg rather than a clean png or rip.

its a .png file
its this shadow portrait im trying to make a MvC2 portrait out of

That's not an MvC2 portrait then. Yes you will lose colour. Look at it, it's packed with gradients. You've got 256 colours just in his gloves.
-
You just need to index the colors of the PNG file. It will automatically share similar colors and you would have nearly no noticeable quality loss.
Here, I've done the work for you:

Wow man, this is fantastic. I love this tutorial, especially the CvS style of implementation. I certainly learned something here, that's for sure. I'll be getting my hands dirty using this sooner or later. ;D
